Had an amazing stay at The Opal. The staff was very helpful and helped alot trying to assist on directions to surrounding places. There are alot of places to eat surrounding the hotel which was great for 3 day stay. This hotel is alittle older but still liked it. I would definently stay there again and recommend it to other people.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great Location for the price"
I choose this hotel based on Location and Price (Including parking). It paid off wonderfully. It is just blocks from the trolley cars so very easy to get anywhere. The price pretty reasonable for SF. The draw backs - LOUD we were in the area around the garage. WOW a lot of noise. The doors opening, the street, the trash being taken out. WOW really loud. […] It is Very possible other parts of the hotel do not have this problem. And finally the Included breakfast could use some fluffing. Either more options or change it a bit day to day. (but hey it was included and gave us some food before heading out to sight see in SF) Yes I would say here again. Ask for a room not near the garage, and use breakfast just to get you going. "Pick a chain hotel instead"
While the location was convenient, the hotel was not. The room was very small. No closet. Small chest of 3 drawers. The hotel and room was musty and in need of remodel. You need long arms and a good reach to get to the toilet paper from the toilet! I had to seek out additional towels each day and the day before we left, they did not replenish tissues, […] toilet papers, soap, etc. The complimentary breakfast was not good. There were no cereals, fresh fruits, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, etc. as you often find in other hotels. Perhaps this is because it is attached to Mel's diner but the breakfast was not good. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
There is nothing to complain about at this hotel, but here are a few notable remarks: No in-room safe. That was a surprise... Beds and pillows could use replacing bit weren't atrocious by any means. The hotel is amazingly quiet given its location on Van Ness, and it really is perfectly situated for transportation and access to everything. Mel's Diner […] restaurant is a bonus next door. The hotel's continental breakfast is fair enough. This hotel is a great value in a city filled with expensive properties. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Faimly Night"
The rooms where very nice...it is an older Hotel but kept up nicely. The bathroom was set up oddly...there was not a towel holder near the sink the toilet paper holder was on the opposite side of the toilet. We had an unexpected expense of parking ($30) but the parking was secure. Overall it was a nice stay the Jr Suite was just the right size for my […] large family. The hotel would benefit from some renovation, however the rooms are clean and the service friendly. Hotel parking is too expensive. Strong smell of chemicals (?) in the corridors.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"An old charm experience"
An old charm hotel where service and care is no 1. The personnel went out of their way to make our stay an unbelieveble one from the concierge who helped with the luggage to the lady that served wine for tasting. The hotel is old but kept up. The rooms were clean and spacious enough. The bathroom was a bit small but it is not a place to linger when […] you are on holdiay. The room was comfortable en nicely decorated. We never got the smell of old en mussy or of old smoke in the hotel. Wonderful!! The hotel is conveniently situated on the bus route to the Fishermans Wharf, China town and the bridge is a few bus hops away. The surrounding neigborhood looked a bit dicey at night but the old sleepers are harmless. They will try to beg but if you don't attend to it they walk away. Although pricey for an evening for parking we knew our car was safe. There are no street parking available so pay the money and sleep well. The convenience of the hotel was the reason we did not have to take the car from parking from the time we arrived till we left again. We will definetely visit The Opal again. "Family stay"
I recently stayed at the Opal with me wife, two kids (5 and 8) and my sister in law. Our room had two full beds and a pull out couch. This worked very well for us and the price was very reasonable considering. Breakfast was a little skimpy but was included in the price. It is an easy bus ride to all the touristy spots and also walkable if you are up […] for going a mile or so. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great find!"
Reasonably priced and centrally located. This was great. Clean rooms. Super friendly staff. Direct access to adjacent diner, Mel's Diner. Public transportation stops just a few blocks away. We will absolutely stay here again! Breakfast is exactly as advertised - continental.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cold showers"
Often had to take cold shower - outside temp in 50's to 60's - as water temp very difficult to regulate. Also got misleading tour info from staff and had to pay more as a result.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Low amenities for price"
Hotel was old but clean. Personnel were very polite. For the price the amenities were few, no coffee in the rooms so you had to dress to go down to grab a cup before your morning starts. Breakfast was limited but there is a good diner next door. Good thing was there was a bus stop right in front of the hotel that took you to Fisherman's Wharf. San Francisco […] bus system was verfy efficient, we did not spend a great deal of time at the hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A nice basic hotel in a central location"
The Opal is a pleasant Art Deco style hotel with basic amenities. Its location is not ideal if you want to go out in the evening as it is in a business district with a fairly large homeless population and we did not feel entirely safe walking down the street after dark, however during the day it is perfectly situated to walk to California St and Market […] St to get the cable-car and street-car to the more tourist-friendly neighborhoods and the piers, and it is well served by public transport, but it is a busy street for traffic. Parking at the hotel was a tad confusing as the entrance is on a 1-way street and getting from the basement garage means carrying bags up steps past low-hanging pipes, then through an open parking area and in a door to the lobby from the rear. The room was nice and clean, and noise from the traffic was acceptably low. Although the hotel website says WiFi is only available in the lobby I was able to get a good signal on my iPad in our room on the 4th floor. The TV had a good selection of cable channels. The carpet had a few stains, but that's to be expected in a hotel of this age, and it certainly didn't feel 'dirty'. The bathroom was extremely clean. The Continental breakfast was basic, but had a nice selection of coffee, tea, juice, breads, jams, muffins, fresh fruit, yoghurt and even boiled eggs. The staff were friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend The Opal if you are looking for a reasonably priced basic hotel that is centrally situated. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great downtown hotel"
THE GOOD: Hotel was very nice, breakfast was ok, location was alright (I would have rather went outside of San Francisco due to being on family vacation) Location would have been great for wanting to go out on the town. Parking was safe. I reccomend the bar across the street for good food and drinks. THE BAD: Parking cost and you should ask about that […] before booking. Parking underground is almost impossiable to park if you have a SUV or Truck. I asked to move to the uper level but was told that parking was already assigned. Navigating the hotel from parking underground to hotel can be difficult if you have a lot of luggage. OVERALL I thought the hotel was very nice..Jr suite was nice and easily slept 6. It was perfect. The hotel general manager and staff were delightful. The location is ideal for getting around anywhere in the city using public transportation. The hotel is connected to a restaurant with great food and it opens early and closes late. We thank the manager and staff for making our stay at your hotel superb. The only inconvenience is that […] there was not enough shelf space in the bathroom for most of our personal toiletries. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very Clean!"
Overall, I'm pleased with the Opal, however, I booked a junior suite (with 2 queen beds and 1 pull-out couch), and paid accordingly for that. When we checked-in (after a long and tiring day of sightseeing), no mention was made that they were not going to be able to accomate us with that room. It wasn't until we arrived in our room that I noticed this […] was not the room I booked (1 king, 1 pull-out). I phoned guest services and they explained that our booked room was out-of-order and they had to move us. After all was said and done, we were eventually upgraded because there were no more available junior suites. I do find it bad business though, to downgrade a customer without any mention hoping they will not notice, yet still charging the higher price. Then not upgrading their room until the customer calls them out on it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Charming SF Boutique Hotel"
We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Good location~about 5 blocks off Union Square. You can pick up city bus on corner to take you anywhere in the city. Although next to the Tenderloin district, area feels clean and safe. Continental breakfast was great. Room and double beds a little crowded with 2 teenagers, but not too uncomfortable (we were on a tight […] budget and didn't want to pay for 2 rooms for just a couple nights.) Front desk staff efficient and friendly. Would definitely stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great hotel near the action in downtown SF"
This hotel has an awesome location near the heart of SF. Given that most comparable hotels in the area cost twice as much, this place is a good deal. On many major bus lines and the cable car. It's an older building, but very well kept up. The rooms were very quiet and we slept great. Although there is no coffeemaker in the room, there is unlimited […] tea and coffee in the lobby, and free daily continental breakfast. It's also a "green" hotel. Overall, recommended, if you don't need a "prestige" name. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hotel Opal in San Francisco, CA - A no-frills stay"
We made a last-minute decision to stay in San Francisco on New Years Eve, and had very limited options. The Opal was nearest to the concert venue where our daughter was spending the evening, so we decided to go for it. When we arrived, the computer credit card system was down, and so we spent an hour in the lobby with dozens of others who were also […] waiting to check in. The staff was courteous and informative, so while there was an inconvenience, it was ameliorated by good service. We checked into our room. It was tiny. There were four of us, and if we were all standing, there wasn't much room for anything else. The room had a strong smell of some kind of industrial cleaner. That smell remained through our entire visit. The heater was noisy, and it was hard to regulate the temperature of the room. The bathroom was unusually long and narrow, but it was clean with plenty of hot water. There was a view out the window of air-conditioning units and close windows from another part of the hotel. Not at all picturesque. Beds were comfortable. The hotel was quiet. It was the last room in town, and I'd recommend it if you're in the same situation. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
