The Opal was a very good bargin hotel in a rather expensive city. The general manager was very pleasant and the staff were always nice and helpful. The king room was clean and very spacious. The hotel is undergoing renovations but the work was mostly unobtrusive and wasn't an issue during our stay. The Tenderloin area is a block or two away but we never […] once felt unsafe either walking through it during the day or night, or coming and going from the hotel. It was super convenient having Mel‘s Drive-in on the ground floor - what a great breakfast place! And best of all, we were only a few blocks away from one of the best Creole restaurants in SF, Brenda‘s on Polk - sweet potato pancakes, cheese grits and the most sinful biscuits! That alone is worth staying at The Opal...being close to Brenda‘s! Polk Street also has some great cafes, wonderful Thai restaurants and interesting bars that are real delights - thank goodness the bad reputation of the Tenderloin keeps the pesky tourists away! Perfectly acceptable hotel in a very convenient location tho the immediate surroundings lack charm. It is a bit frayed around the edges and service is no frills, but this seems a good trade-off for the reasonable (by San Francsico standards anyway) price.

I travel a lot. This is a very good choice for the price when staying near Union Square. The bed was comfortable. The people at the front desk were very nice and helpful with any request. A standard breakfast with lite yogurt and bagels was included with the room. There were a few homeless people but the caused no issues.

I thought the hotel was nice considering the rougher appearance of its surrounding area. The staff was young, friendly, accommodating and what I would expect for the rate. The building isoldish and the walls are thin... I could hear an adjacent couple getting it on one night, but I wrote it off as part of the 'urban experience.' My room faced one of […] the cross-streets, so it could be loud at times due to traffic. I don't blame the hotel for that, but it is something to consider if you are expecting a quieter experience. The noise never kept me from sleeping. Before I left for my trip, I did read reviews about some of the floors wreaking of pot, which I certainly experienced. However, after my trip, I can attest that just about every block in San Francisco smells like pot. If you can't handle this hotel, then you can't handle the city. Read more

Overall it was ok. If have no other choice, then go for this. Its not far from golden gate bridge, lombard street, fisherman wharf if you have a car. But when if u need to walk outside, then i will not walk outside with a family after sunset. Too many homeless outside. inside is clean. Reasonable daily clean area for breakfast. It could be better if […] there was cereal, waffle also. Lobby area is nice and clean. I liked about daily 24 hr coffee, hot water available in the lobby. The front desk reception people are good, nice and helpful. They guide u well. Problem was only one elevator and they close the stairs to go to parking lot via stairs. It gets crowded in elevator. Rooms inside are spacious. Outside rooms are smaller. I had booked a larger deluxe room but then i asked for a room near my family. They gave me an outside, that was good also but still charged for a large room. I do not know why? Anyway, overall, not a bad hotel if with family. No smoking area. Happy with the stay, the hotel was well located and clean. The infrastructure is a bit dated but well maintained. The breakfast is small but adequate (Bagels, Coffee, Cupcakes, Juices, Yogurt and canned fruits).

From the outside, the big/ front building looks great and I am guessing the rooms are newer. But, we were placed in a separate /adjacent building, in a dated room, second floor (no floors above us) and below are parking spaces-- just like a motel in a courtyard. I didn't have high expectations of The Opal, and knew it wasn't a 4-star hotel. I can say that the bed was more comfortable than expected, and the front desk staff was very helpful with taxis. I didn't realize it was in such a bad area that the front-door was locked 24-hours a day and only accessible via your room key. And the carpet in my room was […] filthy, with stains all over it. Also, the heater dripped on the carpet and left unexpected wet patches that were rather disgusting. Mattresses were a little stiff but rooms were clean and comfortable. May be time for some flat screen tvs as those old boxy ones are an eyesore. Location is everything though and you can hit most points in SF with a 10 minute walk. Front desk staff were extremely knowledgable about the area.

The staff are helpful and friendly, this older hotel is well maintained and clean, the WiFi works well. Breakfast is a little sparse consisting of toast, boiled eggs bagels muffins, yogurt and fruit cups. The hotel is convenient to bus service with a diner next door and a fun bar with reasonably priced food and over 100 beers (also reasonably priced) […] across the street. The theater district is a brisk 10 minute walk away, don't take O'Farrell, parts of it get a little dicey, take Geary. If I go back to San Francisco, I'll stay there again. Read more

Was not able to check-in in person since the garage could only be accessed once checked-in. The room was clean and spacious. In the bathroom, there was plenty of room with a roll in shower and padded fold-down seat. I would use this hotel again.

The Opal is not a fancy hotel, not luxurious, but overall reasonable and well-priced. The room was large (I had a junior suite? two queens and a couch area I never used), and very clean. There was a small coffee-maker but no tea (and they forgot to resupply coffee one morning. There is a continental breakfast - nothing special but sufficient. The location […] is very convenient, and while the neighborhood is perhaps a bit dicey at times, i never felt unsafe walking by myself. The front desk staff was nice and very helpful - no problems there. Internet connections were good. Definitely should be thought of as a traveler's hotel, there are few ammenities that would compel me to stay during the day, and the floors were not exactly bare-foot comfortable. We like a quiet hotel away from crowded areas like downtown, fisherman's wharf, ... Opal is in the center of SF and easy to get anywhere. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Right next door to big theater complex so big public parking garage around the corner which the desk clerk told us about when asked and told us it would be cheaper than their lot. […] Well used but clean w/lots of room in bedroom and bath. Had a nice 4 days here recently. Friendly and helpful staff and comfy rooms with huge bathroom. Short walk to major attractions but was a little sketchy heading back late at night...if you could find a cab (which is hard), take it back to the hotel after 10pm instead of walking. Would stay here again though...

The Opal is a good place to sleep in the downtown of San Francisco. It is on Van ness street. The bus stop is nearby, which can take me to anywhere I want to go. Not very far from Union Square and Chinatown. However, the hotel is in old style, Like a maze. The room is tiny. Homeless people hangs around so I didn't go out after 6:30 pm.
