"Good location, bad vibe"
I was incredibly disappointed from this hotel. I wouldn't have minded if we only paid 50$ for the night, but at $200 a night it was terrible. Tiny square box of a room, didnt even have any paintings on the wall. Carpet in the hallways flapping up everywhere, and we couldn't even get bottles of water anywhere within the hotel! We initially decided to stay at The Opal because the photos and reviews on Expedia were good overall and it appeared to be a good value. My initial reaction upon arrival was that the hotel was quite old and in need of some updates and, while it was close to Union Square, the area around the hotel did not seem safe. I was extremely disappointed that none of the rooms at this hotel connect even though i called and talked with the reservation team to give me 2 adjoining rooms and they assured me they would do what they could to make that happen. "Racism is never acceptable."
The hotel would have been fine if it wasn't for the front desk. When I asked for a manager I got "come back later to speak to one, but the manager won't fix it" wow! I had 2 clerks really rude. One when we first checked in. I had questions for her and all she could say was we can't do anything for you. The last clerk pushed me over the edge when she […] purposely tried not to help me. She saw me twice and took every other Caucasian person ahead of me. I may not look like I have money but I was a paying customer. I paid the rate just like everybody else. When asked about checking out and why was the hold not removed already and showing a double charge they told me they could not do anything about it. I will not be staying here ever again. I'm very dissapointed and very upset. I feel it was done purposely not to help me. The sense of racism I get blows my mind. How this day in age we can have that. The hotel looks pretty old and beat up. The rooms are small and the toilets are for the size of a 5 year old. The area isn't too bad. Park in the outside parking. "A hotel isn't a hotel if you can't sleep in it."
Cool hotel. Central location. Even has a Mel's diner attached. The room was small but nice, bathroom worked properly, parking was fairly easy. But I got NO sleep. Oh my god, the locks on the doors are INSANE. When you put your key in, the lock emits a loud, high-pitched beep. Then there's a clunk as the lock disengages. Another clunk as you turn the […] handle. And you can't shut the door quietly from the outside, so 50% of the time there's also a loud clunk as the door closes and locks again. All night long, all over the hotel, that's all I could hear. After hours of having my pillow over my head, I ended up getting dressed at 1am, going for a walk, and hanging out with the bums on Van Ness Avenue. We had to postpone leaving for a day and find another hotel, since there was no way I could drive back to Los Angeles on zero sleep. "The Opal Hotel - Truth in Advertising"
When all other hotels in San Francisco seemed to be booked, there was a very expensive room available at the Opal. The hotel appeared charming from the outside. The front doors were secured (which was good) and the lobby/entry charming. However, our room was in the back of the hotel and was nothing more than an old motor lodge attached by a walkway! […] Smokers stood around the balcony (the "motor lodge" was above the parking area) and the part of the hotel that we stayed in was old and run down. It was EXTREMELY noisy. The room was old, but had no charm or "vintage" feel like the rest of the hotel did. It seemed fairly clean, but there was room for improvement. The beds were hard as cement and the shower took about 30 minutes to drain. The hotel advertised a "full breakfast" which was nothing more than bread, hard boiled eggs, and apples (the coffee was fine). I give the hotel an "F" for being untruthful....staying in a run down motor lodge, attached to the hotel, did not amount to what they advertised or the photos shown - especially for the price. "Socks and flipflops"
This was the dirtiest hotel room I've ever experienced. If I hadn't pre-paid for the room through an Expedia package we would have immediately checked out and gone somewhere else. The carpet and furniture were stained. The towels and sheets were thread bare. The windows looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a decade. Everything felt dirty. We wore […] flip flops to avoid touching the carpet and I felt compelled to use a sock to avoid touching the remote control. We tried to spend as little time in the room as possible. We walked down the street to get cocktails, hoping they would help distract us from the room. I asked what the continental breakfast consisted of when we checked in. The man behind the counter said: "ham, eggs, onions, cheese". After seeing the room, we knew we didn't want to eat breakfast at the hotel, but my wife looked in on the breakfast as we were checking out. It was stacks of sh*tty bread next to a line of toasters with coffee and OJ. None of the foods that the concierge promised were there.
