"Perfect location in San Francisco, great perks"
Great location. We were just staying here before flying out, but great bed. Nice room, but small. Hallways, bathrooms, etc could be updated. Older hotel. Nice refreshments in the lobby. Helpful staff. Affordable parking with in and out privileges.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Cozy but nice"
Location was great, and hotel parking is right around the corner (20 min. drop-off is available in front of the hotel). Definitely cozy by modern standards, but it ads to its historic feel. The hotel is in the heart of shops and restaurants. The staff was very welcoming and everything was very clean, though some of the furniture was a little worn. Lovely european-style hotel adjacent to Union Square. Right on the Cable Car line and 4 blocks from BART, so easy to get around. Rooms in the back are quieter than the front of the hotel, but we were on a top floor and the noise level was fine (typically city noises). Staff were very helpful and pleasant. I would definitely stay there again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Location, location, location. Right on Union Square, close to Chinatown and Bart. Highly recommend. Room was small, but who stays in the room when in SF?Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Our San Francisco hotel"
We have stayed at the Chancellor many times now. The location is perfect with great restaurants, Union Square, shops, and most importantly, theatres within walking distance. (Actors Theatre of San Francisco) The beds are a dream, the tiny restaurant serves great breakfast and lunches, and Mao, in the restaurant, is like a longtime friend welcoming us […] to his home. Scalas across the street and the Daily Grill on Geary are fantastic places for dinner--be sure to make reservations. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The rooms are a bit small, and the furniture a bit dated, but so what? The staff was friendlyexcelllent, they let me use their printer to make copies at no cost, free coffee/co and helpful, free water/coffee/cookies all day the lobby, free WI-FI, and the location could not be more central to the downtown/Union Square, with trolly access north and west. "A Great Alternative to Pricey Hotels Nearby"
It's a modest but well-maintained older hotel right near Union Square, Chinatown, and the financial district. The room was not as small as expected, based on some of the reviews. Service was friendly; got a good tip on a nearby restaurant, and when our TV remote stopped working, the batteries were replaced right away. Although we were on the 13th floor, […] the elevator arrived within seconds. The free cookies, coffee, and newspaper in the lobby were a real bonus. Would definitely stay there again. "Chinese New Year Overnighter"
Booked the hotel through a 3rd party, called to confirm with the hotel and the receptionist was super nice and helpful. Used to live in the city for years so I'm familiar, but I called the concierge anyways for dinner/entertainment recommendations and Vanessa killed it! We loved the restaurant, and checked out a few of the bars she recommended. Dueling […] piano bar around the corner was super funny and my girlfriend loved it. Room was clean, nice and had everything we needed, including a nice (clean!) tub with bath salts. Stoked on it, and would definitely come back. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Room very cold"
All aspects of the hotel were great. Cleanliness, condition of hotel, location, great staff, amenities, comfortable bed, however, the room was extremely cold. (only a worry in the winter). I had turned the heater dial on when I arrived back from dinner, and continued to be cold. The setting choices where 1 thru 5 (not a thermostat). I put it at 3. An […] hour later, I was still freezing. I called guest services, and was told that they do not turn on the main unit until 10:00pm. I was still freezing at 10:30pm, and called them back, and they informed me that I can use the space heater in the closet to help get rid of the chill. Never even new it was there!!! I plugged it in, and used 3 blankets to fall asleep. Basically, this hotel would have been amazing in all categories, if it was so cold outside. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Great hotel for the price and location in Union Square. Walking distance to public transportation (cable cars and bart) and shopping. The room was very small but clean. The Chancellor is clean and comfortable and the staff is friendly and helpful. The beds are comfortable and the rooms include a small refrigerator. "Very comfortable and accomadating hotel"
Me and my boyfriend had a great stay at the Chancellor over New Years. The rooms are small, but extremely comfortable and have all the accomadations you could need. Also he arranged a shuttle for us to get to the San Jose airport for our departure. The hotel is in a really good location near the a BART station, restaurants, and shopping. "We'd eagerly stay there again"
Location was great -- the Chanellor is convenient to everything. But a drawback to being in the heart of any city is city noise, such as sirens in the middle of the night. "Good value/service/location, but a bit small/dated"
Our room faced Powell St but was relatively quiet since it was on L13. The only complaint we had was that when we first arrived we noticed a musty smell as well as well as the smell of cleaning agents. "A touch of historic San Francisco"
As return customers, my adult daughter and I found this comfortable, well-maintained "old lady" to be exactly what we wanted for our visit. We enjoyed our street view, even with its noises, for we wanted to feel the energy of the city. Also, being able to see Union Square from our window was special. A big plus was that we could open the window a crack […] for a little fresh air; it only opens a little bit, so is not a safety hazard. Excellent access to transit and cable car, and to nearby inexpensive cafes and diners. And Union Square is very pretty at Christmas time. Commute to Financial District only $10 each way and fast. It's right in the union square so that was very good, and the pharmacy was right behind it so that was good too, but a bit noisy in the nite, even when the windows are closed. Bath tub was nice too. "Great hotel in Union Square"
This is a great hotel in the heart of Union Square. It's smaller than some of the large hotels, making it more quaint and the amenities and servie better. Other comments included complaints about a small bathroom - this is true, but it is true of most hotels in SF. However, the room is rather large for the city. I have stayed in more upscale hotels […] with smaller rooms. The Chancellor is an older hotel, so yes it only has two elevators, but we never had a problem using these. "Size does matter!"
Wonderful little place with a ton of charm. It was within walking distance of many venues in SanFran including the Moscone Center. The staff at the front desk could not have been more accomodating. The only things I would change about the place would be; (1) to install sleep number mattresses in lieu of pillow tops.. my bed was dredfully soft. (2) the […] shower head height is perfect for shorter people, at 6'-2"., I had to practically get on my knees!.. therefore, I would install "hand held's" shower attachments to suit taller guests. "The Chancellor"
A true boutique Grand Hotel built in 1914 next to Union Square in San Francisco. A bargain. The rooms were a little smaller than most, but that was the norm in 1914. Besides they used standard beds back then and now use queen size. Fully up to modern expectations. A desk, a table, an active internet connection. The bathroom was tailored for the room […] and the best feature was a large walk in closet where one could hang and store everything. "Great for visiting the SF city."
This hotel is in an older building and has a lot of character. Its right on Powell Street, in the heart of Union Square in downtown SF, so you walk out of the hotel onto a bustling street. Did not find the street noise as bad and if you want no noise then you probably should not stay at a downtown hotel. Quick walk to the Moscone Center. Powell street […] Bart a block away from hotel and cable car stops right outside the hotel. So transportation is easy. The rooms were on the smaller side, but the ceilings were very high. The Walk in closet was roomy and adequate for storing multiple bags, suitcases. Hotel even provided a umbrella! The bath salts were a nice touch. Some other reviews have complained about the step up to the bathroom, it wasn't an issue in any way. It was clearly marked on the floor and the only possible danger could be stubbing a toe if you forgot the 1 inch height difference between the room floor and bathroom floor. If you are looking for the generic large hotel chain comforts, this hotel probably wont appeal to you. But if you want to try variety, this is a great place. Great location, hotel staff was very accommodating and helpful. The hotel is well kept, beds and linens were very comfortable and the restaurant downstairs serves a good breakfast and lunch. Plenty of dining options a few feet away and all around the hotel. If you want to visit the city, then this is a good place to stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
