Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Cable cars turn around at Powell and Market streets to head back to Fisherman's Wharf.

Great Location. Easy access to city transportation. Only major complaint was no air conditioning and hot nights. Minor complaints are blinking light across street required closed drapes which warmed up room even more.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient location and fairly priced"
The staff at the hotel was excellent. We ate breakfast there and really enjoyed the buttermilk pancakes. We were able to walk to and from the Giants game - it was about 1.5 miles each way and relatively flat. The only downfall is that the room was rather small. We would go back.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location!"
Location can't be beat. Rooms are small & hotel is old but rooms are very clean. Tons of little touches make it cozy and comfortable. Staff is very friendly and helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"We would definitely use this hotel again"
The desk personnel were very friendly & informative, the cold water w/lime & cookies plus a coffee machine in the lobby a nice touch; our room was very comfortable & impeccably clean....we'll definitely come back. (We had breakfast at the Golden Gate Restaurant a block away & it was fabulous...it's a bar + restaurant w/great decor.)Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location"
If you want to be close to everything on union square then stay here. Loved it, noisy but hey it's on union square and it adds to the atmosphere. Would defiantly stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient location"
Comfortable bed and room. Bathroom in poor condition; i.e., cracked tiles, peeling paint, etc. Somewhat indifferent employees at front desk.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"No Better Location"
This hotel is in the middle of town right on Union Square and roght on the cable car line. It is very convenient. Rooms are smaller than you find in the big chains but perfectly adequate and very comfortable. They are like the size of rooms in Europe . The bed was extremely comfortable. There is a walk in closet, so suitcases can be opened and left […] in there, not cluttering up the room. The closet has an iron, a safe, an umbrella, and an ironing board. Staff was extremely receptive and helpful. This is a city hotel, so expect street noise. No A/C, but in SF you don't need it. Windows open, and there is a fan. "Very well located hotel"
We ThoroughLy enjoyed our stay. The staff were very helpful, the rooms were comfortable and we especially loved the complimentary apples and cookies. We would definitely recommend this hotel and stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Close to shopping and good food"
great Hotel. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Downside: I wasn't really sure if there was an AC as it was a bit hot in the room, but i removed the top comforter off the and slept fine. Small and quaint hotel. Didn't have dinner there, but ordered breakfast to go from the restaurant and staff was helpful and quick. As with any stay in a downtown […] high traffic area there are some weird people that wander around because of the easy access to local transit (BART). You can catch the cable car right across the street from here so thats nice and there is an offsite parking garage around the corner, self park is about $33/night. On check in, was given a room in the front of hotel. I then requested a quieter room (in the back of the hotel). They gave me a quiet room, but I had to wait 1 hour, as room wasn't ready. Overall, a great stay, as location convenient for tourists, beds were comfortable. Cons: no refrigerator or microwave in room, no breakfast included, still somewhat […] noisy from street noise, but they provided a white noise machine on request. Lobby had apples, coffee/tea and cookies, which was nice. Also there was a concierge in lobby that was very helpful with muni system (sold passes too), and we were able to store bags until our plane left (for a few hours). We didn't have a car, but if we did, they charge $29/day for self parking and more for valet parking. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very conveniently located"
The hotel is within working distance to good dinning, shopping area and transport. Staff are very courteous and helpful especially people at Tour Desk. Offer 24 hour free HotTea, Coffee and biscuit at Lobby which is fantastic for cold weather or if you are leaving early morning when the restaurants are not open yet.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The best thing about this hotel was its location. Block away from Macy's, shopping, few blocks away from the Westfield center, good restaurants in the vicinity, convenient to get on the tour buses, trolley stops etc. Did not really spend a lot of time in the room, but I felt like I got a return on what I paid for (esp considering the prices in SF). […] Room was clean and comfortable. Recommend getting their parking included deal. Overall, reasonable price and good stay! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"5 star location at a 3 star price"
Perfectly located hotel-on Union Square, on the Cable car line, next to Sears Fine Foods, next to a 24 hour Walgreens, across the street from Starbucks, free coffee, tea and cookies all day. Plus the people are soooo nice. Family has been coming here for over 20 years at the same time each year and we have never been disappointed with the excellent […] service and kindness of the people who work here. Rates are so reasonable. I stayed at St. Francis for business once and it was waaay more expensive and Chancellor was just as convenient. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Chancellor Hotel in SF-Close to tourist attraction"
The Hotel is located in a great area, Cable car stops right in front of the hotel. china Town is couple of blocks away, Union Square is just one block away. The Room was Clean but it was an old room and the Towels were torn on the sides. it is good for a short stay, not for a long stay and definitely not for a romantic trip. the bath room is really […] small and Old but it was clean. The complimentary Tea/coffee and cookies were nice. The Staff were OK. We recommend it for short stay and if you want to be close to the tourist areas. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"my experience"
Good hotel, good location, not deluxe but nice people, there wasnt a breakfast, only cookies and coffee, kind of mislead, and valet parkng takes over 30 minutes to get your car, however they helped me with that upon checkout because i had a few bad experiences waiting in a red zone for someone to come help me from valet. "Chancellor Hotel -- good value"
Clean rooms, great location, helpful staff. The check-in procedure is antiquated, though, and takes forever. You also can't check in before 3pm (unless, perhaps, you request in advance or are willing to take a room on a lower floor (they seem to clean from bottom up)), though they will hold your luggage until your room is ready.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very Convenient"
This no-frills 3-star hotel is just what it looks like: a very convenient hotel with charm but not a lot of style. Coffee and cookies were always readily available, the bartender was easy to talk to and quick with quality recommendations, and the service was fine. Rooms were small - but that's to be expected - and they included thoughtful details like […] bath salts, and an umbrella. Overall, a nice experience, but the hotel part was rather forgettable. "Chancellor Hotel is convenient and comfortable"
This is a great hotel in a wonderful location. The rooms are comfortable, the closets are large, and there's a deep tub in the bathroom. There are 5 kinds of pillows on the bed and a jar of hard candy on the table. If I ever have a chance to return to the San Francisco area, I will make it a point to stay in the Chancellor again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"The Chancellor Hotel in San Francisco"
The Chancellor is a centrally located hotel. It is close to shopping and restaurants. The room was on the small side but comfortable. The rubber duckie was a nice touch. There was an umbrella in the room and you also have a choice of pillows. Not to mention, free WI-FI. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast in the restaurant was reasonably […] priced and very good. The waiter that I had was exceptional and made me feel at home. All in all the Chancellor Hotel is an excellent hotel to stay at in San Francisco. I would stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location, great value"
The Chancellor has been our hotel of choice in San Fran for many years. The old SF charm is delightful. As Oregonians, we love the complimentary rubber ducky for the swimming pool size tub. We encountered two new issues this time: Room service is NOT the price on the door hangar and we needed to cool our room and could only do so by opening the window […] which is on Powell and therefore VERY noisy, but a true SF living experience. "Chancellor Hotel - Union Square"
A great hotel in a fantastic location, and at a great price point. Friendly staff and a great room. Admittedly we where at the back of the hotel with not much of a view, but the comfort of the room was good. You pay a lot more for the "brand" hotels yet receive less service. If you're in Frisco sometime choose this hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Location, service, value"
We had a great time at the Chancellor. If you like boutique hotels, you will enjoy it. Renovated rooms were very comfortable, and the pillow menu was nice to take advantage of for sleeping comfort. We liked the fact that we stayed on the backside of the hotel--it really cuts down on the street noise. We had all our questions answered by the staff, especially […] Matt. Nice guy. The Borders and Starbucks close by were convenient, and the restaurant La Scala was great. 4th of July holiday was intense--there were incredible amounts of people on the street. "All-in-all a good deal"
Hotel is very nicely located in downtown San Fran. The parking is about a half a block away, but they had excellent service and cars were taken care of quickly. "A San Francisco visit"
This hotel is very comfortable, clean and friendly. The room we had was a bit small but certainly adequate, with two comfortable chairs, a desk and bar fridge... a large closet held all our suitcases so the room seemed more spacious. The location of the hotel is excellent, in easy walking distance to local transportation.. a bit of a walk to the Market […] St. trolley, 1 block to the tram line and to a pick-up location for hop-on-hop-off buses at Union Square. "Close to where you want to be"
I liked the overall feel of the hotel. The lobby and dining area (with bar) had a cosiness that seems missing in those hotels with expanse of lobby. "Excellent Place in town - close to Chinatown"
The concierge is very helpful with directions. Two doors away is a large convenience store and across the road is Starbucks - great for family. "Truly Old school charm in the best location!"
My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights just before Christmas. Must say, read all the reviews and what they say are all true. The Chancellor is a bit old but definitely has the charms. A very friendly environment with helpful staff. Kudos to Susan who aided immensely with booking tours and travel passes. If you are staying for a few days, do yourself […] a favour, get a Muni Passport. You can catch all the public transport in San Francisco which really is great. The hotel is located on the Powell Cable Car Line and each ride usually costs $6 so the passport pays for itself instantly. Also, the hotel is very easy to access from the airport, simply take the air shuttle to the BART station and get off at Powell. Head north 5 minutes and you there. Located next to vibrant union square with el primo shopping on Post st. A short walk east to market st and hop on the F tram and within minutes you are at fisherman's warf. Lots of quality cheap eats within 2 blocks (google it). Recommend King of Noodles and Arisashi Ramen. Powell is close to the Tenderloin district, so you get the occasional looney/beggars but that is pretty common no matter where you go in San Fran. If you want the best location, great value, friendly service then look no further than the Chancellor! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Well located but dinky hotel steps from Union Sq"
We were given a small and pokey room (and bathroom). The room was clean despite dated woodwork i.e. skirting boards, trims, internal door etc... The biggest advantage is that this hotel is yards away from Union Square (currently under reconstruction), Tour operator stops, Macys shopping centre and Market street. There are plenty of places to eat and […] a few bars nearby ... almost everything is open all night. Cannot fault the location. Overall, the room was clean but pokey and in need of some modernisation. The staff was exceptionally helpful and would recommend this hotel to anyone. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"The Chancellor Hotel in San Francisco"
The hotel is in a perfect location, especially as the tram stop is just up from the hotel! and Union Square just down from it. This is an older style hotel but is well maintained, rooms are quite small but nicely decorated and comfortable beds. Good restaurant in the hotel which we used for breakfast and good choice of food with pleasant service. We […] were however surprised at the cost of meals in San Francisco and then Las Vegas compared to England which is something to consider if booking a family holiday as we did. They also like lots of ice in their soft drinks but you get free "soda" refills. We found the Americans very friendly and very helpful especially in taking family photos. All in all a good holiday was had by all the family. The only downside of this location was the number of tramps in the street although you were not approached by them you could feel intimidated.
