"Historic Hotel - Excellent Location"
We've stayed at many hotels throughout San Fran. This one is older, but is beautiful in the lobby! Rooms are typical SF Size (small), but it works. We were not on Market side which may be noisy. Location is perfect for Metro or Buses literally right out side the door! Little rough at night but we just walked through the problems areas. Would stay again […] simply for convenience of getting around on Public transportation. Parking at hotel is $35.00 day. However, it's cheaper to leave your car parked at get passes. Parking by the pier or other places is $8.00-$10.00 per hour. Not a lot of places to eat right around hotel except for some fast food w/o some walking. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Hotel was clean and well maintained. Staff was courteous and accomodating. Room was somewhat small but only used it for sleeping, was out and about by 8:00am and gone for the day. Do not book this hotel if you plan on using the room extensively. Bathroom was new and clean but very small. You can hit your head on the sink while on the toilet. Rates were […] acceptable for a major city. Many homeless in the area but they keep to themselves and are not a problem. Close to all buses and trolleys. Good breakfast at Sam's across the street. location is convenient but not nice. nothing was good. the corridors were full of drunks until 7 am. i called the operator every half an hour from 3p, they did not even wait in the corridor 2 minutes to find the people (they were coming in and out their room all the time). unfortunately my kid heard the words they used. in the lobby at 4p daytime, a […] toxicated person was already falling on my child. they were pulling pushing each other, the person at the door just stared at this situation. hotel is surrounded by homeless people. do not plan on walking even to union square when dark. in day time, some people were fighting, police was there. room was dirty. beds made us itchy. no evidence of bed bugs, but something was wrong. "Nice, quaint, historic place to stay"
Our room was very small and basic, but with just the two of us, it wasn't a big deal. Some people may want to make sure they get a room that has a bed bigger than a double. The rooms were kept nice and clean, and all the employees were very nice and pleasant to deal with, and the location is great, on Market St, right outside of BART and Trolley stops. As soon as we drove around trying to find the parking entrance there was a man urinating in the middle of the street. I know there are homeless everywhere, but my wife did not appreciate this. "Centrally located Historic Hotel reasonably priced"
Pros: historic hotel, lots of turn-of-the-century charm, centrally located, very close to BART, rooms with tall ceilings, reasonably priced relatively speaking, Starbucks in hotel, on-site parking reasonably priced. Cons: a lot of homeless and street people in the surrounding blocks (I walked with my kids throughout the area and never felt unsafe, but […] some might find it unsettling), beds in rooms were mediocre (too firm, not a lot of support from box springs), mediocre water pressure, smaller rooms (but tall ceilings and charm made up for it). "Gem in a cesspool"
This hotel is historic, beautiful and nostalgic. The beds had pillowtop mattresses, very comfy. The room and bathroom are not large, which was common in hotels back then, but there is a large closet. The elevators are very slow and small. The stairs require you to open two doors on each floor. The Hotel itself is very nice, but when you step outside, […] you find yourself surrounded by street people. The sidewalks reek of urine, etc. They are mostly harmless, but you have to be prepared to proffer or deny handouts. Best to have the concierge call a cab and get directly in it. ""Historical" aka not updated"
The lobby was lovely, but the rooms were so outdated and small. The bathroom light/fan was so loud that it woke anyone else in the room. The mattresses were sunken in the middle. The room was clean and well maintained. It was obviously from anther time period so it was smaller than usual for a room. The staff was helpful and professional. "Close to all the malls but too noisy at night."
I thought the hotel was beautiful, inside and out. But it gets noisy at night from all the buses and cars to the night clubs and theaters. But overall , my stay was fantastic room service was great and the staff was very friendly and helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not what we expected..."
Well when you walk in to the Hotel Whitcomb the lobby is beautiful, but when we walked into our room....not so much. First of all we were supose to have a 1 queen bed, we had two full. The carpet was stained and dirty looking. the wall paper was dirty and peeling in some places. Our window was so dirty we couldn't even see out it with out opening it. […] I do have to say even though we ended up with two full size beds, they were very comfy, clean, and pretty. Because we were in a handicap room, our bathroom was set up for someone in a wheel chair. I am 6ft and the shower head only reached my stomach...which made washing my hair a pain. There were holes in the wall that indicated that there use to be shelves in the bathroom at one point. The fixtures had some rust and the tile just looked dirty. I ended up just wearing my flip flops in the shower. We had arrived later in the day and once we got settled we decided to go walk around and see what was near our hotel. It was about 7:30/8pm when we left to explore. We didn't get very far bc there were so many homeless people, beggers, and just alot of rough looking people out and about. I know in a big city like that you will see that, but we have stayed in SF before and the ara was much nicer than this. When we made the reservation we were told that it was in walking distance to the wharf...nope it isn't. We had to rely on taxi's. It cost $14 and change one way to the wharf. I just know we will not be going back! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We are from the small mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona, so I wanted an impressive hotel for my daughters and I that we could afford. The Whitcome fit the bill. The concierge was […] particularly helpful. Even the securitiy, and bell hops had good recomendations for us. Our room was comfortable and quiet. "Beautiful, historic hotel, showing her age"
1) Beautiful and historic 2) Beautiful lobby 3) Aging rooms; not immaculately cleaned; only about 30 cable stations available; interior rooms have a dismal view. 4) Convenient location for access to city sights 5) Nice restaurant and Starbucks adjacent to lobby 6) Seedy neighborhood 7) Great rate during Christmas holiday 8) Overnight parking rate seemed […] high to me 9) I requested my car 30 minutes prior to needing it (only 20 minute notice is required). "So So Hotel, Pretty good location"
The first thing I noticed is that they seem to have put all of their money in the lobby and chandeliers in the lobby and hallways. The room was a different story. Based on the lobby and the front of the hotel, I would've expected a flat panel tv, a fan in the bathroom that didn't make a ton of noise, and a clean looking bathtub. It was a little dingier […] than I expected it to be. The location was pretty decent. We were able to walk to Union Square in just 10-15 minutes, but had to walk through several blocks of streets pretty full of homeless people. I have nothing against homeless people, it just made it feel like we were in a dirtier part of town. I don't have any complaints about the staff, the interaction we had with them was good. But I would've paid a little bit more to have a little bit nicer hotel in a better location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hotel Whitcomb - big money for little sizzle"
This is a great old building that had a cheesy update done in the recent past. Access was horrible, parking was very expensive and our room had a fine view of the roof ac units. We were serenaded by sirens. There must be nicer places to stay for much less money.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel Whitcomb"
Way overpriced for what you get: not much. No coffee maker, or nice decor (very ugly and non matching in fact) cracked bathroom tiles, slow drain in shower, very noisey. We were woken up by drunk hallway partyers at 3 am, yelling, no control by authorities. The hallway stunk, and smelt musky and dirty, old. The outside way scarey, too many homeless […] and panhandlers, parking was horrific. Would never go here again, ashamed I brought my family, for the price they charged, it would of been way better to stay outside of the city and commute, It is not a historic and cute place, it is old and needs updating, and has no flavor. It should be taken off the list of any reccomendations. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Convenient Location"
The hotel has a beautiful lobby and the bellhop was very helpful. The rooms had very high ceilings and were spacious (if you were in a single bed room, the rooms with the two beds were a tad cramped). The bathroom was very small but tidy. The doors need more insulation because we heard people slamming their doors all night. Maybe if they put some sort […] of soft closing device on the doors so people can't slam them? The BART stop was steps from the hotel entrance, as was the F trolley, so no need to rent a car. I wouldn't recommend walking around the neighborhood at night, take a cab if needed. "Hotel Whitcomb - Overpriced and a Disappointment"
My family and I stayed there for one night, expecting a lot since it was overpriced. The surrounding neighborhood was filled with dirty beggars and it was far from Chinatown. The rooms were just as dirty as the beggars and were not well maintained; the sink was cracked, the TV old, the bathtub dirty, and a toilet you would find in a school or public […] restroom. The complimentary internet was unbelievably slow and so was the operator downstairs. The service was also a disappointment; the hotel staff were not friendly and none of them smiled once. Thankfully we moved to the Hilton San Francisco the next day. I would definitely not be staying here again due to its terrible price to service ratio. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Get in - get out!"
While categorized as a "historic" property and facility conditions can be overlooked/forgiven, the hotel staff at the Whitcomb could certainly learn a few lessons in the area of customer service! I can count on ONE HAND the number of smiles we received from their staff during our entire 5-day stay. No one seemed happy to be there and my family and I […] felt more a bother to them than actually welcomed. The staff made little effort to hide their problems from the customers (my wife endured a manager arguing with another employee about the color of his shoes on the Mezzanine level). Add to that the hotel switchboard provided us with wrong information on the open hours of the in-house restaurant. We thought we had time to get cleaned up before having dinner and when we showed up to eat, the waitstaff at the door unapologetically told us they were closed, even despite someone at the restaurant earlier having told us to come on down and they'd hold a table for us!!! When we asked for the same person, she was nowhere to be found! And then once you walk out of the hotel, you nearly trip on all the homeless and weed-smoking transients just outside the door! Not the hotel's fault perhaps, but it certainly doesn't add to the charm of such a "historic" property... So, that was our experience. Nothing exaggerated, nothing made up. If I were to do it over, I'd pick another hotel. Sure this one is close to the BART and F-line straight to Fisherman's Wharf, but so are many other hotels for just a few dollars more. Trust me, it's worth it to pay the extra money and pass on this hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Hotel"
I highly appreciate the managerial skills and promptness of the hotel manager- John. He was extremely helpful. The staff were friendly and helpful. The concierge in the hotel is very convenient and the Asian lady (I am sorry, do not remember the name) was very detailed in her explanation on various tours that one could do and she was very helpful. The […] only thing that I think can be improved is the number of items on the menu at the market grill restaurant and the quality of food. For the amount I paid for dinner, I would expect a little better quality. Also, maybe, increasing the number of vegetarian items on their menu would be very helpful. Other than that, I will rate the hotel as 5 on 5! Thank you! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good Value, OK Hotel"
Hotels in SF are very expensive, but we got a very good price and good value at the Whitcomb. The value is the biggest plus. Also, for a big city hotel the rooms were spacious and comfortable. The staff was generally friendly and helpful. The hotel lobby was classic 1920s. Here are the downsides: the room (on Market Street side) was very loud. Also, […] the location is not in a very good area of town. There was a panhandler about about 100 steps asking for change. The parking is limited and fairly expensive (but about the going SF rate). It is better to not have a car and just take taxis. Also, we saw a rat running down the hall in the very early AM. Overall, it was a good stay. I would return.
