The location of the hotel is in a decent spot, close to union square. The entry to the hotel is nice but the elevator was extremely small and the rooms were very outdated. It's a good place to sleep but nothing else

I stayed for NYE 2013. It was great as it was close to Union Square but I would pay the extra $60-$80 to stay at the Marriott or other 3-4 star hotel in the area the next time. The shower water was barely luke warm even after running the water for 5-10 minutes as the front desk stated (and after they reset the water heaters) and the heating element […] in the hotel room sounded like running water (pretty loud) the entire stay. Great location, fantastic bar food and easy access from the BART. Typical Union Square SF hotel, the only down side the elevator. Smaller than a closet and seems to be used by EVERYONE in the hotel, including staff.

Parking is HORRIBLE...Waited 38 minutes to get my car from valet service on the 1st night. On my 2nd night, I waited 25 minutes. Not only did I have to wait to get my car, when I returned to the hotel to park my car, I had to cirlce around hotel 5-6 times to get valet to park my car. I wasted alot of my time over parking issues..

i booked this room 2 weeks before New Years Eve. THe photos made this hotel look very nice and well presented. However when we arrived the hotel was not a bright and clean as the pictures showed. Walking distance to theaters, shopping, bars, bart, restaurants.... Hotel room was small, but sufficient, clean and comfortable. Hotel staff were very friendly and very helpful! They didn't just give us directions to places, they printed out maps, suggested restaurants and printed out reviews for each one. We will definetly go back!

The hotel staff was very accommodating and knowledgeable. The hotel is older, but the beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms, while small, have everything you need. I did feel creeped out a couple of times walking through the neighborhood at night, though.

Hotel Mark Twain is in an awesome location if you're looking to stay around Union Square Area. It's walking distance to all the great shopping, restaurants and nightclubs. However for the price of the room you may be able to find something just as close but cheaper. Our view was of the dumpsters and very noisy in the morning from all the street traffic. […] The bathroom was very small and not a lot of space to move around and get ready in. I would rate it as a 2/2.5 star hotel not 3. The hotel and rooms are dark and dreary. The location of the hotel is on the edge of the Tenderloin area; walk to the end of the block and the area isn't very desirable; but walk the opposite way and you are in a good area and within walking distance to shops, restaurants and the cable cars.

It has recently been redone, so when you walk in to the lobby it is very beautiful. The room was a little small, but had seating, a fridge, and room to sleep. You could hear the people in the next room through the vent in the bathroom which was quite odd. It didn't cause any problems, though. The toilet also needed a few flushes to get all the toilet […] paper down. The windows were really dirty which had a tendency to make the outside look cloudy even if it wasn't. It was also a little loud in the room that we had on the street because there didn't seem to be much insolation. The elevator was a little small, but we did put about 8 people in at one time and it was ok. The stairs are conveniently located and have Mark Twain quotes on the windows. The front desk staff was very nice, and accommodating. We arrived at 10am, far before check in, but they were able to give us one of the two rooms we had reserved. They were quick. We had an issue with the valet parking because one of our cars was only there 2 nights and we were charged for 3. They quickly fixed the bill and were very nice about it. There are in and out privileges for their valet service - so make sure that if a car is leaving for good you let them know so you don't get charged for it. The surrounding neighborhood is a little sketchy one direction, and fine the other. I thnk this is normal for any big city. If you are aware and careful, you'll be fine. It is however, close to union square, transportation, great food, and a few bars. It is also in such a great location that it isn't a very large cab fare to get to North Beach or anywhere else. I think I would probably stay here again because the rates were great for the location. Like I said, there are many places to eat within just a few blocks, shopping, and all different types of transportation (BART, bus, cable car, cabs, etc). It was a great and incident free stay! We had a group of four staying in a double bed room. Our room was right near the elevator, so when people were leaving to and fro it got kind of noisy. The water heater in our room started clanking ridiculously one night, we called the front desk and they turned it off for us--no more clanking and back to sleep we went. I thought the room could have […] been cleaner or have better linens/towels...felt dated and over used and the carpet could use a fresh cleaning. Some comments about surrounding neigborhood, if homeless people freak you out then this may not be the spot for you, there's a community house about 3 builidings away. But the neighborhood does have some really good eats nearby. We walked to a great dinner place the night we arrived and coffee place in the morning. Overall our stay was good. We were looking for lower cost than staying in the heart of Union Sqaure, we were close to the BART, and got around town on public transportation quite nicely. Read more

The rug in the room looked old and dirt. Everything was very loud. From people in other rooms you could hear their conversations and they were not shouting. Cleaning staff slamming doors every morning. All the cleaning staff seemed to do in the room was make the bed. Never vacummed. The lobby of hotel is very dark and dim.

The place was convenient to pass out after the club but BEWARE!!!! Do not pay cash for the Voss water bottles in your room as they will charge your card regardless... Its only $8 but its the principal. I had called them back a few times and they promised to call me back but never did. BOGUS!

When my friends and I checked in to the hotel, the gentlemen at the desk seemed a little irritated and annoyed. I did not feel welcomed. When we got to the room, everything look clean, and confortable. We tried to watched TV while we got ready and the remote did not work. When we asked for a new remote, the same gentlemen was rude about it and said […] he will take care of it. The location is great for the price of the hotel. Its a fairly good location. Really noisey in the mornings, if you have the windows open. Reception will NOT call a cab for you, they will send you to the Hilton (located across the street). My friend and I came in on BART at about midnight. We made the mistake of walking down Turk at that hour. Wow. I have lived in big cities and traveled alone a lot of places, and that street within a 2 block walk scared me more than Brooklyn, the Bronx, and my current LA ghetto. By far. The frontdesk staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The rooms were nice and comfy, with a good number of pillows and towels. However the heater was noisy and the courtyard tended to echo the sounds from teh bar below. The Taylor St Coffee shop next door was the best! Try the Grilled Crab Cheese sandwich.

The hotel is very convenient. It's just a block away from all the nice shopping areas! We stayed here during the week of Thanksgiving, so Black Friday shopping was definitely very convenient for us! The downside was that the hotel is old and the elevator, rooms, and hallways are quite worn down. The walls were terribly thin and not sound proof AT ALL. […] Our neighbors decided to turn on their radio one morning and we thought our own radio turned on automatically! It was ridiculous how thin those walls are. We could hear EVERY SINGLE WORD coming out of that radio. Oh, and the bathrooms are terribly small. it could hardly fit one person and we're all pretty skinny. The door couldn't even open fully. The cleaning ladies were extremely nice to us! The front desk was helpful and friendly to us when we asked for directions for sight-seeing. The area around the hotel didn't seem very safe at night though. However, there are much worse areas further west of the union square - like towards the Tenderloin area. This block seems relatively safe compared to the areas further west. For the price and convenience, I would definitely recommend this hotel! If you wanted better amenities and nicer rooms, I'd recommend you to check out Hilton across the street. Read more

I'm a native San Francisco that lives elsewhere. I know what to expect when I book a hotel in the tenderloin... the "TL" is extremely dirty, with many homeless people, and ample drug and excessive alcohol usage. I'm a big guy and don't get hassled, but this location is not desirable for any sort of romantic trip. The Mark's location is awesome, BART […] and MUNI close, and within walking distance to SO MUCH good food. I was on the 9th floor so street noise was never an issue, and the building itself is secure. THIS IS A GREAT DEAL ON A WELL LOCATED HOTEL, but fyi many would classify the surrounding area as "hood"!
