I wasn't too happy with the stay. When we pulled the sheets back there was hair all over the sheets, pillows, and the blanket. Very disgusting... Front desk brought all the stuff to make the bed however we had to do it ourselves. The building is a little run down and there was mold in the bathroom. The part that really irritated me was that the hotel […] charged my card $200.00 for INCIDENTALS when I was originally told it would only be a $50.00 charge. Pros: Location; reasonable price; concierge/doormen were kind; let my lady check in early; restaurant accommodated us at closing time & food was good. Cons: Bathroom was moldy (embarrassingly moldy). My boyfriend and I just visited. Needed to get away from all the family and enjoy a birthday weekend away. The staff was fun and welcoming. The rooms were neat and very clean. It is an older place so the rooms are smaller but the hotel is updated. Beds are comfy and its within reach a sone great restaurants. If anything the staff sold it for me!

Hotel was clean but time has surely taken its toll on the poor old hotel. Room was clean but extremely small. Parking was almost an eye and a leg for one night... Staff was ok... Except for the tall black gentleman who was friendly, welcoming, and extremely informative.. I give him an A+ and the rest of the hotel a solid C.

Hotel Carlton is not a very luxurious hotel, but it is very cute and quaint. The decor is very "international" and there are many South American and African influences in the theme. The bed was quite comfortable but a little on the small side and the bathroom was clean but may need a little updating (some stains in the tub and the paint was peeling […] in the bathroom due to moisture). The TV inside the room was tiny but not necessary for our trip (we were never in our room much). There were two old elevators that were old but worked adequately. Not more than 3 people can fit inside them, with luggage. The staff was incredibly friendly and they offer wine tasting in the lobby every evening around 5pm or so and there was a live musician. I was a little worried about the neighborhood since I read some of the other reviews but I had no problems. If you've ever been to San Francisco you know it's a hodgepodge of the very wealthy to the shuffling bum on every street corner. Read more

On Saturday night, there were inconsiderate guests who were partying in the hall. This occured on the 2nd floor which should of been heard on the 1st floor. The staff did nothing until I called at 1 o'clock in the morning. The maid service did not leave 2 washcloths and 2 hand towels each day for the 2 of us. I was not impressed.

We stayed in Carlton only for 1 night. Otherwise it would have been a good average place but we got a room that had a door between our room and the room next to ours. The door in between the rooms was really thin and you could hear EVERYTHING really clearly. So, we obviously didn't enjoy that much our stay. From the time we got to the hotel, the service was exceptional. Actually, the best I've ever received at a hotel. The employee Edgar was great! He offered help with our bags as we pulled up and promptly delivered them up to our room after a short wait at the reception desk. As others mention, the walls are super thin and you can hear everything your neighbors are doing, if you are picking up what I'm putting down? The wine reception was nice also (Edgar served this too), it's cheap wine but I'm no fool. We drank like fish before heading to dinner. The hotel is located in a convenient location with union square within a short walk and a great bar/restaurant next door. The valet parking each night is $30 bucks with tax it works out to be $34. A parking lot directly across the street is a flat $20. Overall, I'd recommend this to hotel for everyone if you can get a rate you'll be happy with. It was about $50 cheaper than an equivalent hotel in Union Square plus the valet parking is about $20 cheaper. I'll stay here next time and park the car across the street. Read more
