We have included all charges provided to us by this hotel. However, charges can vary, for example, based on length of stay or the room you book.
Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Cable cars turn around at Powell and Market streets to head back to Fisherman's Wharf.

Tim at front desk was wonderful. Lacks major ammenities like gym and business center, but very accomodating front-desk and hotel services. Very ecclectic place. I would stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Would come back"
Nice little surprise of a hotel. Grateful for the upgrade, as I received a charming corner room on 7th floor. Old old building has been remodeled nicely. Didn't take advantage of complimentary shot of tequila at check-in (got there at 10am...although it probably would have made the conference I was attending more fun). Down sides: noisy location, very […] sketchy neighborhood (MUST take cabs at night), hair in bathtub. Up sides: great bed and wonderful staff. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good location for seeing the sights"
We had a wonderful time in the beautiful city of San Francisco! The staff was friendly, helpful, and fun. Breakfast and the afternoon wine and cheese was very nice and appreciated. Overall, The California Hotel was a lovely place to stay!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Decent hotel in a bad location."
Everything was pretty nice about this hotel except the room and the neighborhood. We paid a lot for a Suite that turned out to be two small rooms connected by a small hallway and a bathroom. The beds weren't very comfortable in my opinion, way too soft and fluffy. The neighborhood was the worse experience. Very dirty, lots of transients, and extremely […] noisy at night, which made it very hard to get a good nights sleep. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Clean room, nice staff, close to convention center"
I visited the Best Western Hotel California for 6 days to attend a conference at the nearby Moscone Conference Center. I wanted to stay closer to the Center, but the hotels were booked up. The walk was not bad though, about 20 minutes, and you get to pass by Union Square and see some of SF's famous trolleys go by. The hotel itself is very clean, and […] I found the staff to be helpful and courteous. The only negative thing I have to say about my experience was that the surrounding area is a bit sketchy at night. Many drifters and street noise, so I might not recommend this if you are traveling with a family. But I travelled by myself and never felt unsafe, just a bit more cautious than normal. Other than that, it was great! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Family Friendly Hotel"
Our family of 5 stayed here in August and we had a wonderful experience. Had the 2 bedroom suite and it was perfect. The central location was great, the breakfast every morning was delicious. The only minor flaw was the very slow elevator but that was no big deal.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Overpriced!"
The cost per night was out of line for the offered amenities. Not a good neighborhood with beggars at the hotel door.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel"
My only compliant about the room was the water pressure and temperature was awful in the room. Everything else was great! Would stay againGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great little hotel for a Union Square getaway!"

"Glad to be home"
This hotel is located in a very old building, and it shows. The room we stayed in was closet-sized with only one electrical outlet and no air conditioning, but I'm sure that is standard for many establishments in San Francisco. It did have an old overhead fan, but it listed from side to side and seemed very close to falling down. The bathroom was basically […] dismal, with old pink shower tiles, cracked floor tiles, a patched tub, and a sloppy grout job applied over the fixtures. Cosmetic issues aside, the water temperature oscillated between burning hot and freezing cold, so I opted to go without a shower. The good news, I guess, is that I now have a renewed appreciation for the amenities at home. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Not the one to rave about but decent enough."
Breakfast was awesome. Kinda noisy which is understandable considering it's the city. However, the bathroom faucets were hard to regulate if you are taking a shower. It is hard to get the kind of temperature comfortable for taking a shower. May need to update on plumbing.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel, sketchy neighborhood"
I really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel California, small but nice room, ok bathroom and good breakfast but some of this was overshadowed by the poor neighborhood. Every night on our way back to the hotel we were confronted by the homeless population, panhandling. The men were not dangerous but not something I like to deal with when on vacation. Be aware […] of your surroundings when you enter the Tenderloin district and take taxis. The neighborhood goes from bad to worse the further in you venture. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Feel the street and bar in your room"
Too noisy and no isolation at all in windows. Windows are wooden and have lots of gap between each other. Therefore, you can feel everything. It is just next to cafe-bar. There is no way to sleep earlier than 2 am which the closing time of the bar. There is an antique elevator which is frequently out of order. We would like to change the room by hoping […] that the other room will be less noisy. Hotel staff was rude to the customer and didnt support us at all. We had to move all our luggage down first from 5th floor by knowing that we will be relocated to a room in 6th floor and move them up to 6th floor. It was terrible as the antique elevator was out of order!!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Calamity Hotel."
Good Location, friendly staff. Place has some old charm, but my shower was touchy, and the AC in my room did'nt work. Got stuck in the elevator once, and the last night I was there some dipstick pulled the fire alarm and scared all the Tourons! Good Times!Genuine Expedia guest review
"it was close to all so not walking long."
In the bathroom, the sink faucet nozzle sprayed out water everywhere. It got our clothes wet, the toilet set wet and floor. The nozzle needs to be taken off and either clean or replace with a new one. Everything else was good. We would stay there again when coming to SF.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"great location & great staff"
The staff was great... the location was perfect. Could walk to lots of places and cabs were easy to get. My bed and pillows were so comfy. My home away from home for the week. I'd stay there again. They had wine and cheese in the evening and a work-out room.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"I'd stay again"
Clean hotel, central location. Rooms were small, but that's usual for old city hotel. It was noisy unless the windows were closed, but they did have ceiling fans. Bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was good size. Wine and cheese in the evening was nice after a day of sightseeing.Genuine Expedia guest review

"1 year wedding anniversary"
We had a great stay! Its a great location being close to everything we wanted to see. Its a 5 block walk from the Bart and metro Powell St. stop. My wife was in heels for our dinner reservations, so we took a $10 cab ride to fisherman's wharf, roughly 2 miles away. The hotel is also within 3 blocks of several theatres to see a show. My wife and I stay […] in hotels roughly 15 nights per month working in the travel industry and have never run into a hotel that serves tequila shots at check-in. The staff at check in was very friendly and helpful going so far as to actually hail a cab down in the street for us. They also let us check in at 12:30, even though policy says 3pm. They also have a later check out then most hotels at 12. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Highly Recommend this Hotel"
We were very pleased with our experience at this hotel. The staff was always friendly (from the front desk agents to the maid staff) and ready to give us directions and suggestions when needed. The complimentary continental breakfast was great. There was a much larger selection of food than we had expected. It is an older hotel, however, it looks like […] it has been recently renovated. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. Overall, a great value in a good location. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"great value for location"
Small rooms, as expected in a city-center hotel. Staff very friendly. But the real value is in the location--just a few blocks from Market St., busses, BART, cable cars, etc. Chinatown is walkable. Excellent choice if you're a tourist, or meeting in one of the nearby convention hotels.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Best Western San Francisco"
Hotel smells old and dusty. Rooms were clean and for the most part odor free. Rooms were very small. Luckly it was just myself. The room would have been too small for more than one person.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Ok hotel not sure I would stay again"
Good Location but little water pressure in the shower reminded me of camping in a RV.Genuine Expedia guest review

the hotel is a typical small boutique hotel. the furnishings are worn. The bedding was fairly good The flooring was relativily new. the bath was medium quality. the room was clean the staff was suburb!!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Business traveler viewpoints"
Fortunately I can sleep through anything as the conversations from the bar next door wafted into my room loud and clear (word for word), until 1am or later. Also, there didn't appear to be air conditioning so this hotel might be uncomfortable in warm weather.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Overpriced, old, dirty"
This hotel is a full two city blocks from Union Square. I have stayed at several hotels closer to Union Square that were much nicer and cleaner and that cost less. This hotel is overpriced. The rooms are old and stained. The guest services were poor.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great value"
It's true, you're offered a free chilled shot of tequila at check-in! The desk employee was very friendly and check in was very smooth. The room, like you would expect in a city, is smallish. For two people, a queen room is fine. Flat screen wall-mounted tv is nice. Bathroom is nice but water pressure was very, very low. I'd definitely stay here again […] if I'm on a budget! "Hotel California"
When I check into a hotel and they give me a chilled shot of tequila at check in, I say Hallelujah!!! Then free wine and cheese at 5:00 in the mezzinine, free delicious breakfast in the restaraunt, and the valet parking is $20 cheaper than everywhere else in town, loved it!!! The staff was courteous, and it had a cool hippy vibe with great artwork. Not […] for people who like huge ultra modern beige Hiton-like structures. Right in Union Square area. Thank you LLoyd and Samuel. Also reasonably priced!!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
