Very noisy and a very tired old hotel................Genuine Expedia guest review
"Glad to be home"
This hotel is located in a very old building, and it shows. The room we stayed in was closet-sized with only one electrical outlet and no air conditioning, but I'm sure that is standard for many establishments in San Francisco. It did have an old overhead fan, but it listed from side to side and seemed very close to falling down. The bathroom was basically […] dismal, with old pink shower tiles, cracked floor tiles, a patched tub, and a sloppy grout job applied over the fixtures. Cosmetic issues aside, the water temperature oscillated between burning hot and freezing cold, so I opted to go without a shower. The good news, I guess, is that I now have a renewed appreciation for the amenities at home. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Best Western San Francisco"
Hotel smells old and dusty. Rooms were clean and for the most part odor free. Rooms were very small. Luckly it was just myself. The room would have been too small for more than one person.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Overpriced, old, dirty"
This hotel is a full two city blocks from Union Square. I have stayed at several hotels closer to Union Square that were much nicer and cleaner and that cost less. This hotel is overpriced. The rooms are old and stained. The guest services were poor.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"musty"
The firstthing that you notice is the very musty and old smell of the hotel. The staff said "well, the hotel is over 100 years old. The room was like a closet. No table, one chair, old towels that had seen better days. Breakfast buffet was good. Concierge service was excellent in setting up tours and bus service. Location was central to sights, TV set […] onmly had very limited selection of channels, beds were comfrotable although mattress sagged terribley towards center. I would not stay there again especially since their rates werenot inexpensive as compared to more modern hotels in the area. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not living it up at the Hotel California"
First I will say that the staff was very helpful and friendly. But it all goes down from there. Upon check in they had a lovely room on the 6th floor for us. But the elevator was not working and it wasn't expected to be for 2 or 3 days. So we asked for a room on a lower floor and were given one but it wasn't anywhere as nice. It was clean. The ice machine […] was in the basement so we had to go down every time and find a staff member to get it for us. Very inconvenient. The restuarant was totally vegan which neither of us were. Every time we walked out the door and down or up the street we were accosted by panhandlers at every corner. It was just a really disappointing experience for what we had paid for it. Will never go there again! The pictures lie!!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nowhere near Union Square"
Although the hotel is about six blocks from Union Square, the neighborhood this hotel is actually in us the Tenderloin. In years past this was one of the worst neighborhood's in San Francisco. Gentrification has improved the neighborhood substantially over the last decade but there are still hundreds of very agressive, substance abusing, or mentally […] ill homeless people in this neighborhood. The smell of urine is also heavy in the air surrounding the hotel. The hotel itself is very nice but if this is your first trip to San Francisco I would not recommend this as a choice. San Francisco is known for it's agressive homeless population as well as the seediness of it's streets but I do not feel this particular neighborhood is a very good representative of the city and would not recommend it for the feint of heart. "First experience in San Fransisco"
Generally the location is very good but the hotel needs to be more clean and sound proof. there was lot of noise throught the night which did not allow you to sleep comfortably. completmentary break fast and WIFi did not justify the cost of per night charges.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Was this a Best Westerm?"
It is a good thing we were not claustraphobic. I could not believe the room as it was so small. It would be okay for one person but not two. But the worse thing was the bed. The mattress was definitely old, sunk in the middle. And when you were laying down you felt like you were slanting down hill with your head first. We had extra pillows and used […] them to prop us up so we were laying with our head and feet on even level and forget the middle. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Needs Maintenance"
This hotel was clean and pleasant, but had some problems with the phone system and elevator.Genuine Expedia guest review
This is a very old hotel and the first room I had did not have working heat! Their elevator states that this is an antique and maximum of 4 people only. This is very true and took a long time to go up! The paint is pealing in the rooms and the toner for the printer needed to be replaced!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best Western Hotel California"
No volveria a usarlo.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel California...Old and Cold"
Upon check in, we were upgraded to a bigger room. Although we were pleasantly surprised by this upgrade, we were dissatisfied with the smell (it was very old and musky), the quality of the mattress and bedding (very hard and scratchy), and the ability to control the temperature in the room. A continental "breakfast" was provided the next morning, which […] consisted of stale muffins, granola, and apples. The location was what originally attracted us to this hotel, and that did not disappoint, however we will never stay at this hotel again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Never again will I stay in this place"
The heating did not work in the room, It was 60 degrees and I almost froze to death. The electrical outlet in the bathroom did not work. I brought these problems to the front desk clerk's attention, but nothing was done. The person attending the breakfast bar was rude. She did not replenish the coffee container, nor was silver ware available.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Just okay"
The rooms are small. The bath tub had a several cracks and does not look clean. No ice machine on floors, you have to request one from the front desk and they will bring it to your room. We requested some ice one night but never arrived. So I just walked down to the front desk to get the ice the next 3 days we were there. Location is good, Bart train […] station is 3 blocks away, several restaurants in the area, and near shopping center. Parking fees are outrageous. Breakfast is okay. "If you want to sleep, stay somewhere else!"
Hotel was fine upon check In but then had the choice of taking the slowest elevator ever (that also only allowed people at a time) or a long narrow stair case to our floor, we got to the room that was small and felt like a bad guest room. Bed was uncomfortable, the window had a direct sight to the hotel lobby next door ad only had blinds that barely […] covered the incoming light (no curtains). Bathroom was clean and shower wasn't bad. The worst thing about it this place though was the noise. From inside the hotel all we heard were doors being opened and shut with a bang. Kids running around and yelling. And from the outside we heard people partying at the bar next door until 2-3am then construction on the building starting at 8-9am (and we had no prior notice about that). So, booked 2 nights there and ended up checking out after 1. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Slow Elevator"
The whole hotel had a old smell to it. The elevator did not work more than half the time and when it did it was so slow, so we just took the stairs (7 flights). Very small rooms and bathroomsGenuine Expedia guest review
There were two major problems with the hotel which iverwhelmed the convenient location: (1) Street noise - made sleep extremely difficult ad room insulation did nothing, (2) Rooms need upgrading - paint peeling, window coverings ... - all show signs of needing work!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very Small and Old Rooms"
We stayed at the hotel California for 4 nights at the end of September. The check in process was easy and convenient. The hotel is located only a few blocks from union square which was very convenient. However, as a result there are many homeless individuals surrounding the hotel and it is surrounded by neighborhoods which we found to be somewhat unsafe. […] We stayed in a standard room which was incredibly small -- even for a boutique hotel. There was barely enough room to lay a suitcases on the floor and still have room to walk to the bathroom. The safe in the room was also broken. When we informed the front desk of the safe we were informed that almost all the in-room safes were broken. They did however allow us to lock up our valuables and passports at the front desk free of charge. The other major issue was that the toilet in our room was nearly broken -- the rocked back and forth when you sat on it! Unbelievable! On the plus side, they do offer free Wi-Fi and there is also a computer for public use. Overall, although there were some okay features about this hotel the cons outweigh the pros and I would not stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"God beliggenhed, god service men ringe faciliteter"

"Best Western Hotel California"
Also, nicht empfehlenswert. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Ikke godt nok."
Her bodde vi i 8 netter, og vil nok huske dette en god stund. I 7 etasje fikk vi rom ut mot gata, støyen gjorde det vansklig å sove. Dusjen hadde akkurat nok trykk til å få seg en vask. Frokost var så dårlig at det er en skam i 2011, er du plass etter kl 8.30 kan de ha gått tom for mat. Utvalgt er bedre i ei pølsebod. De som jobbet der var hyggelig […] og hjelp så godt de kunne.
