Located in San Francisco's downtown shopping district, Hotel Union Square is on the Powell Street cable car line and within 2 blocks of Union Square and the Westfield San Francisco Centre. Within 4 blocks are the Moscone Center and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).

Built in 1913 for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, the Art Deco boutique hotel was a favorite of author Dashiell Hammett. Hotel Union Square offers coffee and tea in the lobby each morning and a complimentary wine reception in the evening. Room service is available from Tad's Steakhouse. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Great location in the in Union Square and very close to Macy's and Westfield mall. Very clean rooms, but they are a bit small. Downside - the room isvery nice but it is small (we stayed in a room with 2 double beds), the urban location means you may hear some street noise. Easy access from Oakland or SF airport on the BART right to Powell St station and 1 block to the hotel. No worries about hauling luggage around the city. "A room with no windows and terrible service"
I was in a rush to get a hotel in San Francisco and didnt do the proper research. I chose this hotel solely on the location and because for some reason Hotels.com had rated 3.5 stars. What a mistake! My room had no windows ! I had never been in a room like this. Maybe if it were an interior cabin in a boat, but not in a hotel on actual soil. Very creepy […] and disappointing and it ruined my stay. As far as service, i wasnt made aware of the room (huge) limitation when I checked in. To make things worse as far as service, my party was to arrive later than me, so i left his name under the registration card to make things easier at his arrival. It made no difference because it turned out when the next front desk arrived he was not made aware of it and my friend had to wait in the lobby no matter what. The only downside to my stay is that my room really did not have any windows. There were two narrow windows that looked at each other through some kind of internal chase that was about 4 feet by 2 feet. No sunlight at all.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Fabulous Location, Not So Fabulous Room"
The Good: The hotel is about a 5 minute walk to buses, trains, and cable cars. It is about a 10 minute walk from the Westfield Shopping center which boasts a ton of restaurants and amazing shopping. It is a 20 minute bus ride away from Fisherman's wharf where the aquarium is. It is about a 15 minute walk to the SFMOMA and other museums. It is also within […] walking distance to Chinatown. There is a Walgreens right across the street to stock up on any personal items needed. I loved the location of the hotel. We didn't rent a car and walked everwhere . The staff at the hotel are very sweet and very helpful as well. The Ugly: The hotel really isn't in the best of shape. In our room, the paint was peeling, the carpets were so dirty they had an unsettling brown tinge to them. There was also black mold spots growing on several areas on the wall and ceiling. The bathtub's enamel had chipped in places and without a fan or ventilation, the room was humid and damp feeling after people are done showering . The sheets and towels are nice and clean though! The Hotel Union Square is located in an area of San Francisco that reminded me of Times Square in New York. It was very central, but loud and touristy. The location doesn't have too much to do with the quality of the hotel, but as an out of towner I would have liked to have a better idea of what was around it, that was my fault for lack of research. The […] hotel itself is totally no frills. Basic amenities (although our room didn't have an air conditioner and we couldn't open the window because the street below was too loud). There was no mini-fridge or lock box in the room. The water pressure in the shower was pretty abysmal. The staff that cleaned the rooms didn't empty our garbage save for one day. The cost of the hotel was pretty low, but I would rather have saved $20-30 a night and just stayed at a larger chain hotel that had all the basics instead. "Mittendrin und trotzdem kein Abzock-Hotel"
Uns war nicht klar, wie zentral dieses Hotel liegt. Es liegt direkt an der größten Einkaufsstraße der Stadt, der Market Street und am Wendekreis der Cable Car. Wir kamen mit dem Auto und hatten keine Chance den Wagen zu parken. Der angrenzende Parkplatz ist klein, gehört aber nicht zum Hotel und ist ständig belegt. Der Wächter lies uns aber ausladen […] und einchecken, danach fuhren wir den Wagen weg. Das Hotel hat freundliches Personal, es gibt morgens Kaffee und tagsüber Tee in der Lobby, Frühstück wird nicht angeboten, das gibt es aber recht günstig nebenan im Tad's Steakhouse. Das Zimmer war klein, das wussten wir aber aus früheren Bewertungen, deshalb gab es keine Enttäuschung. Das Zimmer war sauber, wir konnten beim täglichen Zimmerservice selbst entscheiden, ob die Laken gewechselt werden sollen. Handtücher gab es immer neu, das fanden wir aber nicht immer notwendig und haben es bei der Hotelbefragung vor Ort auch angemerkt. Die Wände im Zimmer waren mit dunklem bordeaux recht dunkel gestrichen, aber das ist ja Geschmackssache. Eine Klimaanlage gab es nicht, aber die braucht man in SF wegen des Pazifikwindes auch eher selten. Der Blick aus dem Fenster ging direkt auf den erwähnten Parkplatz, das wollten wir aber so, da der Blick auf die Powell Street zwar schöner aber auch definitiv viel lauter gewesen wäre. An einem Abend funktionierte der Süßigkeitenautomat im Treppenhaus nicht, aber darum wurde sich am nächsten Morgen sofort gekümmert.
