Located in San Francisco's downtown shopping district, Hotel Union Square is on the Powell Street cable car line and within 2 blocks of Union Square and the Westfield San Francisco Centre. Within 4 blocks are the Moscone Center and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).

Built in 1913 for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, the Art Deco boutique hotel was a favorite of author Dashiell Hammett. Hotel Union Square offers coffee and tea in the lobby each morning and a complimentary wine reception in the evening. Room service is available from Tad's Steakhouse. This 3.5-star hotel offers a 24-hour business center, complimentary wireless Internet access, and a penthouse suite, which can be reserved for small meetings and receptions. We asked for and received a king-size bed. The actual room was very small, barely large enough to accommodate the large bed, a small nightstand, a single chair, and a very small table with a coffee maker on it -- quite different in size and spaciousness from what the website shows. Moreover, the floor perceptibly sagged when one walked across it from […] the side of the bed. The bed itself had only a mattress -- no box spring -- so it was very low and a bit difficult for us older folks to get in and out of -- again, quite unlike what was pictured in the website. Plusses are the wine reception every afternoon from 5:00 - 6:00. It would have been better had they been scheduled from 5:30 - 6:30 or 6:00 - 7:00 because most people don't go to dinner at 6:00 pm. The hotel is very conveniently located. Powell St on the lower end near Market, so it is always busy and noisy with the cable cars running. It's old but has been nicely maintained. My only real complaint is the staff who tried to scam us into taking a town car to the airport by telling us repeatedly that it was too busy to get a cab (on a Monday afternoon, […] and not raining). "Other than parking, what's not to love?"
I love this hotel. The parking was right around the corner. I don't like paying for parking, but in San Francisco, there is not a whole lot you can do about that. There is a huge, luxurious mall a block and a half away, along with the cable cars and BART station, and there are all kinds of other shopping within walking distance. The diner next door […] was cool. Walgreens is being remodeled (currently closed), but it's right across the street. The rooms do not look like hotel rooms. That makes it even better. The toilet was chair height, the shower curtain was curved. The light switch int he bathroom was not in the best location, though. The lady at the front desk was very polite and helpful. It was a nice stay-cation. I would say this is one of the most conveniently located hotels I've ever stayed at.
