We were disappointed in the Clift. I guess they have some sort of grandfather clause that allows smoking in the rooms, as pot wafted out in the hallway as we were walking to and from our room. I expected more from CA smoking bans! Also, the night club scene was really loud and the people were extremely rude. Tried to get a drink in the lobby but I guess […] we weren't cool enough to be waited on. Will pass next time we are in the city. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Never again..."
Terrible. We ended up checking out at 1:30am because we couldn't bring ourselves to actually sleep there. They did try and fix some of our issues after I brought it to their attention. However, after seeing dirty boot prints on our bathroom floor (our shower would do from hot to cold) I was done.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Enjoyable stay"
Loved our room. It was incredibly spacious and comfortable. There was a nice walkway to the bathroom but the actual bathroom was a little small. The shower had great pressure. Downstairs was swanky and fun. It is a little pricey for room service and parking, but it was a great stay overall.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very Thoughful Service"
I was extremely impressed with my recent stay at the Clift!! We were celebrating my wife's Birthday so I booked a room at the Clift and made dinner reservations at the Cliff House both fabulous. As soon as we checked in, the receptionist upgraded our room to a king suite for no extra charge. We came downstairs to the bar for a couple cocktails before […] dinner and the bartenders gave us exceptional conversation. The beds are magnificent and the colors are beautiful. I strongly recommend you stay here for a romantic getaway. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Hotel in a nice neighborhood"
Perfect place to stay in San Francisco with easy access to all areas. The bed was very comfortable. The room was quite spacious and the peppermint shampoo is great. The shower is very forceful could benefit from some water saving device to make it more environmentally conscious.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Excellent service!"
Best hotel experience and service I've enjoyed in a long time. From check in to check out, I felt very looked after by the hotel staff. Colin checked us in, gave us an unexpected upgrade, and promised we would love the room, and we did! Within 10 mins, they called the room to make sure we were happy and if wr needed anything. Coming and going, staff […] at the front door greeted and very friendly making sure we sisnt need help to our room. I would DEFINITELY stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"party destination"
It is an older building that has been remodeled. Dimmed lights and euro-trash sophisticated decor. We stayed on the second floor and it was painted pastel purple. No offense, but it kind of reminded me of a sophisticated brothel of some sort, or that is the feel I gathered from walking down the halls. I felt like I was in a scene of Taken as if there […] was some eerie business going on in the dungeon. Overall, it is nice and sophisticated but this is a party desitination as we stayed just above the club/bar floor where dance music was bumpin. Rooms were small but modern and upgraded with nice additions like flat screen tv, ipod dock, and mirrored at both ends of the bed, perhaps to give it a roomier look. bathroom was extremely small. This is not a good place for a romantic getaway. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"SSSHHHHHHH!!!"
The Clift is a nice hotel in the heart of it all, but....the walls are paper thin, maids knocked on door twice before 9:00 to make our room up after being told the first time we are not up yet. Security came to our door because of noise, which was our iPhone on there stereo and being too loud for the person next door. There was no call to the room, […] just 2 security guards at the door. FYI you never open the door at a hotel for security, you don't know who they really are. Overall, the hotel is old and is only in business because of there bar/lobby, which the bartenders are rude and expect a $5 tip on your two cocktails you paid $35 for, just a tourist trap. Stay away from this one. There are plenty of nicer, newer and friendlier hotels in San Francisco. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Hotel But Rooms Leave a Little To Be Desired"
The Clift is a nice hotel with a great location. The location was perfect for our stay and the Red Room is always a great place for drinks or to meet up with friends. My only issue is with the rooms. Although fairly comfortable, the decor is rather cheap and there isn't much in the way of amenities. The bed was comfortable and they had very nice bath […] products. Just wish the rest of the room was up to that standard as well. But overall a good value for the money. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Cozy and very soft beds"
I have never stayed at this hotel before. I stayed with my boyfriend for a night out for my birthday. The redwood room was very packed and it was difficult to get a waitress to order drinks from. The drinks were good but way too pricey. The hotel room was small. No dressers or closet! The bathroom was tiny. My boyfriend and I could barely stand in there […] without bumping into one another. And the water pressure was really strong that it felt like I was being hit with a fire hose. Room service was expensive. $30+ for chicken ceasar salad. The overall decor was beautiful in the hotel. "Great Location and Cool lobby and bar"
I liked the Clift but the rooms seem a little dated. The lobby and bar are really cool but the drinks were overpriced. I paid $28 for a double grey goose greyhound????Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We did not like the Union SQ surrounding area for the grit and number of people but the hotel is very nice. Drivers beware...very expensive to part in the city center.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice room"
The room (superior king) was large and simply but stylishly furnished (I like that). The bed was extremely comfortable. The only drawback was a poor TV with a very limited selection of channels. The bathroom was fine, but had a smallish tub with a shower curtain that blew everywhere when the powerful shower was on. I find that very annoying! I think […] they should just rip out these short tubs and put in walk in shower with a glass wall - much better use of the space. The staff were friendly and helpful. "Modernized classic"
The Clift is a great old San Francisco classic, modernized by the Morgans chain. Centrally located near Union Square in the Theatre District, it is excellent for theatre goers and shoppers, and a good central location for seeing the rest of the City and the Bay Area. It is, however, a tad close to the central City's sketchier neighborhood and not really […] proximate to a BART station. There are a number of restaurants open 24 hours on the block -- terrific if you are up at late hours, perhaps noisy if you are a light sleeper on a low floor. Our deluxe room was large and comfortable; I can't comment on the basic room. Room appoinments were minimal (the walls are bare save for mirrors and flat panel TV), but adequate. Common areas are decorated in an edgy fashion, particularly the neon colored walls of the elevators -- this is not the hush toned lobby of the Clift of yore. Service was excellent, also in a modern sort of way, with knowledgeable concierge staff and prompt room service. The Redwood Room Bar, only slightly updated, is still the best in San Francisco. Great for a leisure trip to San Francisco, not sure it remains a top spot for the businessperson that does not care to combine pleasure with business. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"For the money, stay somewhere else"
The Clift is an old hotel once you get past the cool factor of the bottom floor. The rooms were a dissapointment, especially for the price you pay. Go stay at a Klimpton Hotel, better / hipper rooms for the price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great hotel and deal from hotels.com"
This hotel suited all of our needs for the price we paid. Great front desk and concierge service. Swanky lobby and bar. In my opinion, the room suited our needs just fine, but if someone is going to be upset about a spot on the carpet, it may not be the place for you. We were on the 14th floor, facing the street and we could definitely hear the street […] noise. Valet parking was expensive, so we parked at a garage less than a block away for almost $20 less and thought the extra cost for Wifi was a bit crazy, so we used the Starbucks across the street. If we were able to get the same price again, we would definitely stay here. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great location!"
The Clift is located right on the edge of Union Square, within walking distance of the BART. The hotel was wonderful, except for the TINY bathroom, not even big enough for two people to stand in at the same time. Other than that, would definitely recommend the Clift.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Clift Hotel in San Fran"
We were plesantly surprised when we arrived at Clift in San Fran. The Room was a very nice size - Bath was very small but expected this for any hotel in SF - 2 blocks down the street from Union Sq - great area - Nice Bar -- everyone very niceGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not a good experience"
Cons - Very thin walls...could hear conversatons through walls on both sides. As in understand every word they were saying - The room is modern style, which is generally fine. That said, the couch, table, desk, etc not practical at all. - They messed up our room service bill. Took 15 minutes to get it resolved by phone. Had to finally take it downstairs. Pros - […] Nice to be upstairs from the lobby bar, which is pretty cool - Location is fine (although, for the money, there are 10 better options in the neighborhood) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great experience at Clift!"
I read some reviews that were both positive and negative so I was interested to see where I would fall. I admitedly thought that some of the negative reviews I read sounded a little ridiculous and nit-picky but I am all about attention to detail and even the small things being right, especially when paying for a 4 or 5 start hotel. Well, I can tell […] you that Clift DID NOT dissapoint. Simply put it was a great hotel, a great room, great service, great location, great atmosphere, helpful concierge, very friendly staff, and very classy hotel experience. We stayed 2 nights on a Friday and Sat night and had ZERO complaints. As a humerous little bonus... Even felt sorta like a rock star walking right in with my room card passed the LONG line outside that was waiting to get in just to hang out at the hotel lobby/bar scene on Fri and Sat night. Great experience all around and look forward to staying there again. It would be hard to talk me into even trying another hotel in San Fran. Thanks for great weekend value Clift and hotels.com! "Ok, but not a 4 star ..."
We had walked by the Clift dozens of times over the years and wondered about it, but had never stayed there due to their higher prices. We found a great last minute price online on Valentine's Weekend and took the plunge. Bottom line was that it was just OK, definately not a 4 start hotel in our opinion, more like a 3. The pluses - great location, clean […] room, quiet. The minuses - a smaller then usual room (which is saying something for San Francisco) with a closet sized bathroom; the bed was nothing special (I expected something upscale, along the lines of a Marriott or Hilton bed, but it was more like your Mom's guestroom bed; we planned on having a drink in their famous lounge, but as it was Saturday night it was absolutely crammed full of 20- and 30-something hipsters - you could barely stand, let alone get a seat, so we headed out to our usual haunts where we knew we could at least get a seat. Also, we knew ahead of time we would not be using their valet parking, which at $50 is also pricey, even for SF. We're glad we finally checked it out, but won't be back, as there are much better choices for room size, comfort and value in the Union Square area. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
