Built in 1928 and newly renovated in September 2011, the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco, Calif., is one of the city's most revered properties. Doormen in full Beefeater regalia offer assistance at this landmark hotel, home to the famous The Starlight Room, a 1930s style nightclub featuring dancing, live entertainment and a 180-degree view of downtown San Francisco. Renovated in 2007, the hotel features Grand chandeliers and pallets of gold, purple and red that welcome guests into the lobby area, complete with plush seating and paintings of Sir Francis Drake. Seared salmon fillets, paper-thin carpaccios and boeuf bourguignons are showcased at Scala's Bistro. The The Starlight Room offers Sunday brunch with attitude, including a live drag show (reservations required). The property also features a renovated Starbucks. A winding marble staircase leads to the mezzanine lounge, which overlooks Union Square and the cable cars below. The hotel hosts 11 conference rooms, encompassing 16,000 of square feet of meeting space. Business travelers can take advantage of a 24-hour business center with three high-speed Internet computer workstations and complimentary wireless and wired high-speed Internet access. Multi-level Parisian-bistro ambiance and picture-window views of Powell Street's pedestrian action and famous street cars. Locals and visitors return for paper-thin carpaccio, mussels and pommes frites, boeuf bourguignon, seared salmon fillet, pan-roasted monkfish, pizza, and pasta. Extensive wine and cocktail menu. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cocktails daily.
The Starlight Room - Dancing, cocktails, and panoramic city views from penthouse-level nightclub with a 1930s flair on the 21st floor. Live bands four nights a week; light menu. Happy Hour on weekdays from 6 PM to 7 PM. Brunch on Sundays with live entertainment. Guests sometimes spot celebrities and sports stars. Open nightly.
Starbucks - Street-level. Coffee drinks and snacks.On Sunday's, the hotel's The Starlight Room offers a classic brunch with attitude. Brunch features Sunday's a Drag, a live show starring Donna Sachet. Reservations are required.
The hotel is five blocks from Yerba Buena Gardens, location of expansive public gardens, a children's playground, a year-round ice-skating rink, and an antique carousel. Three of San Francisco's public-play golf courses are nearby: Presidio Golf Club (four miles); Harding Park (six miles); and the Lincoln Park Golf Course (six miles). The waterfront Embarcadero, one mile from the hotel, is popular for jogging.

"My birthday trip"
Great trip. Great hotel. Because it was my birthday, they gave us a bottle of wine and macaroons for the room. Only complaint was the lack of service upon arrival. First let me say we loved the Drake. Great location, great service, beautiful room. But what a surprise it was to come over the hill from two blocks away and see throngs of people lining the streets. We loved our stay at the Drake. The hotel was beautifully appointed, and we enjoyed the perk of free wine at 5 pm and endless coffee in the morning, while enjoying the beautiful lobby area. The beds were really comfortable with lush linens. We only stayed one night, but I liked the fact they would give you a $10 dining credit to forego daily sheet washing. […] So many hotels these days squawk about wanting to be environmentally conscious, when in actuality all they do is reduce their own bottom line when the customer makes the sacrifice, and the hotel pockets the profit. Kimpton gives the savings back to the customer, which I appreciate. My only qualm about this hotel is if you drive in yourself - it is $57 a night for parking.
