see all hotels in San FranciscoThe Monarch hotel was nothing special, but did the trick as an affordable and acceptable alternative to staying at the big hotels in Union Square. It was just a short walk away, but the neighborhood was somewhat lacking in dining options, and the room wasn't anything to write home about. That being said, the staff were polite and my room was plenty […] clean, if a bit aged. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Close to nice cafe"
I think one of the best advantages of the Monarch hotel is its closeness to Jebena cafe. You have a nice breakfast at this cafe and then head to business around there.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nothing glamorous but good value"
We needed to stay on the cheap and this was the only hotel in the city that offered affordable rates without being too scary. It's a very old building that would be beautiful with a remodel, but then I'm sure it wouldn't be affordable! The room was clean, but there aren't too many extra comforts. There is no a/c in the room, and just an old wall heater. […] Most of the electrical outlets didn't work, or were too stretched out to hold the prongs of our appliances. Neighborhood outside is a little sketchy, but we walked to and from the hotel at night without any problems. It's within walking distance of lots of bars/restaurants, which is nice. "The Monarch Hotel in SF"
Overall is OK. The front desk clerk could be a little more friendlier. The wi-fi service is horrible. I have to ask the clerk to re-set the router many times during my stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Monarch Hotel SF"
I do not think you could get any better for the price. Hotel in general was average for star rating.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Go here, only if you can't find anything else. The wireless access in the rooms are terrible."
The rooms are spacious. The interior looks ok, but at the price you pay here, you can find something better (in terms of quality but a little bit smaller) room very near SF downtown. Also the wireless access in the rooms is unusable. You have to go to the hotel lobby to use the internet.Genuine Expedia guest review
"decent for the money"
I stayed for three nights at the Monarch. The lobby is nice, with some decent stone and comfy furniture. The elevator is old school; a little slow but has charm. This hotel was significantly less expensive than similar hotels in the area, and was in the location I needed to be. I read the reviews, and yes, there are homeless that hang out across from […] the hotel's front door. Don't walk down Geary at night alone if you are female, as it may be unsafe. However, the hotel itself is very safe, and the room was fine for what I needed. The bed was comfy, but the pillows were flat. The bathroom was clean and the shower had decent pressure. The woman at the front desk gave me an entire box of tissues when I asked for a few for my trip... very kind! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cheap"
This hotel was very inexpensive and that makes sense given that the neighborhood is a bit dicey. It's a much older establishment, so don't expect frills. I got stuck in the elevator and the staff on duty did not seem at all surprised.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
If you want hot water on the 6th floor maybe you should move down a couple floor. Power outlets, if you can find one that works your lucky. The beds, I think the sidewalk would be softer, and the pillows are pancake thin. Now the good part, the hotel staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Uncomfortable beds, unfriendly staff"
The night desk clerk was brusque and unfriendly. The bathroom sink was loose from the wall and looked like it might fall right off. The bed was ghastly—hard and lumpy—and the pillows were somehow thin, lumpy and hard all at once. The comforter was unpleasant polyester and had several holes burned through it. The bottom sheet was not fitted, which is […] not necessarily a minus, but in this case it continually came untucked and it and the mattress pad would bunch up underneath me. Location: The neighborhood has some great places to eat and is well served by a number of bus lines. The hotel seemed to be located across the street from a homeless shelter. This was not a problem for me, but it might be for some people. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"2 Star Hotel"
Clean old hotel with good free coffee in lobby. It has one ancient elevator and it is a drag when you have to hike up the the 6th floor when it is broke down. Sketchy neighborhood.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good value for money"
Rooms were pretty clean. Morning staff was helpful, evening staff not very bright and not helpful. Rooms were cleaned daily. The hotel is 15-20 mins walking from the city center. Geary road is ok to walk; not too safe, but ok. Full of nice bars, for rock tastes. Little breakfast places too. Parallel streets are full of homeless people. There is a homeless […] center or something nearby as well. I would recommend using a taxi late at night. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A great value for the $$"
I take ratings with a grain of salt and I am an experienced traveler so I am usually not surprised by much. I have to say that some of the reviews posted about this place must come from very picky and unreasonable travelers. The hotel is very centrally located with easy access to all forms of public transit including cable car stop a few blocks away […] (buy a Muni Pass at the airport when you land it is the best value in town). The Tenderloin section of town does have it's fair share of street people but they are not agressive and just have to be taken as "local color". Really if you visit any large city you will get some of this unless you want to stay at the Fairmont or Mark Hopkins for triple what I paid per night. The hotel room was great- clean, no bugs, not noisy (we were on the top floor at the back so it was very quiet. The front desk staff were pleasant but really I did not have much need of their help. If you go to visit somewhere you really need to be able to find your own solutions to stuff- do reasearch online before you go and carry a smart phone. Other than that I have nothing bad to say for the price I paid for a three night stay in one of the most eclectic and fascinating cities in the world. Relax and have a good time and leave your picky attitudes at home and you will have plenty of fun. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"The Monarch Hotel - nothing royal, but good."
I booked the hotel just to have somewhere to sleep while visiting, I was out almost the whole time. For the money I paid it was a very good choice: close enough to fun things, the staff was polite; they cleaned the room every day, I got the smallest room they've got, but it was nice, clean and the bed was comfortable. The windows opened (which was important […] to me)! The internet connection was OK, I had to reboot my computer a few times to get back online, but it was working. The bathroom amenities they provide do not include lotion... just soap and shampoo, which is weird - I'd rather have lotion than shampoo. I was there during the week, so it was fairly quiet at night (no noise from the outside, but considerable amount of noise from other rooms - the walls I guess are pretty thin). I'll stay there again if I come for a visit when I don't need to spend the whole day in the hotel room. And by the way, the breakfast place next door is great! "Decent place but bad area."
This hotel is old / classic. It's basic, clean, and even charming. Other than the pancake flat pillows I was satisfied. There are (2) things you need to be aware of; the first is that the windows are thin. Due to the surrounding buildings, sounds echo and are magnified. Take soft earplugs for sleeping (and your own pillow.) The second thing you MUST […] be aware of is that this district is in the Tenderloin. This is a high-crime/ very seedy area. It's a shame because their are decent restaurants & bars in the area. If you do stay here I also highly suggest that you check out the AMC theater right around the corner on Van Ness. It's a classic building that has been converted to a 5 story classic theater. Also, a few blocks over on Eddy St. is "Pronto Pizza" that is without a doubt the closest you can come to NY pizza without being in NY. It's addicting! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Do yourself a favor and AVOID AT ALL COSTS!"
My room smelled like 20 years of ashtray. My bathroom smelled very strongly of mildew. I couldn't even shower. They sent me to a room that was occupied. The wifi doesn't work, because "we have concrete walls" but no one told me that before I checked in. There are not very friendly people hanging out in front of the building and no shortage of sirens […] throughout the day and night. I wish I could get that day back. I stayed at the Monarch Hotel in June, the hotel room itself was not bad but I did have issues with the staff. Biggest problem of the hotel was the free Internet service, which stopped completely once (unable to log in) and was intermittent. The signal on the upper floors was week. "Cheap if you don't need internet"
There is no internet service to speak of - it is totally unuseable, as it is so slow that old fashioned dial up worked better. Thrown of it constantly as well - you will have to do all your computer work somewhere else....Genuine Expedia guest review

Large room (very large in comparison with some hotels at o'Farrel and Powell) with bath, iron, TV and fan. Very clean. Refrigerator absence in cheap room seems to be disadvantage, but is quite tolerable.Genuine Expedia guest review
"OK"
Before booking this hotel, I called the front desk to ensure there was onsight parking, only to discover their idea of onsight parking is the uncovered auto repair lot next door. Had I known this, I would have stayed at the Opal for $10 more. Besides the parking situation, we found the room to be clean although a bit run down. "living well in the Tenderloin"
I'm not squeamish about neighborhoods, especially in San Francisco. If, on the other hand, you don't like having strip clubs across the street, garbage on the sidewalks, and people who may smell bad walking past you, you shouldn't stay here. If you are like me, though, and can live with those things and are trying to save money, I heartily recommend […] this joint. It's inexpensive, with a clean room (and plaster walls, so there's less chance of noisy neighbors bothering you) and a perfectly agreeable, if not overly (and falsely) friendly staff. The free wifi sometimes slows down, the result, i assume, of limited bandwidth. And a block away, on the corner of Van Ness and Geary is Tommy's, a real San Francisco bar. This hotel is excellent if you are on a tight budget. You essentially get what you pay for (breakfast not offered). The Hotel is on the corner of Geary and Polk Street. "Good value"
For the price of the room the hotel is very good. The hotel was full yet I didn't hear any noise from other rooms which can sometimes be a problem in cheaper hotel. The room was clean, had an iron and hair dryer & free toiletries. I wasn't sure after reading the reviews but for the price of a room in a major city like San Francisco, I would recommend […] it. That said, you may want to know that 1/ the neighbourhood is a little bit edgy at night 2/ the internet connection is very slow and not good if on a business trip - I had to go to the cafe across the road with free internet to access my emails at normal speed 3/ I probably wouldn't want to go there for a romantic weekend 4/street noise is quite loud although most can be blocked with earplugs.
