"Next to main cable car station, shopping, and pier"
Only offers valet parking, convenient location (right on market), had a corner room with a nice view but water pipe outside of the room clanged against the wall every time someone showered or flushed the toilet in the room above ours. Stays include continental breakfast and a happy hour. Room was clean but it did not have central heating, had to request […] a space heater as one of the nights of our stay dropped into the low 30's. "A little too shabby for the price"
The hotel has very historic feel with original stair railing, windows, high ceilings. It was classic San Francisco which is what we wanted, but it was not as nice as the pictures and price would suggest. We were comfortable and it was clean enough, but it was definitely a couple notches up from a motel. I know this, because if we had spent $20 more, […] we could have stayed somewhere really nice. They advertised free continental breakfast, but when we arrived in the lobby about 40 minutes before breakfast were to end, there were 20 people waiting for coffee and food, because they had run out of it all. After 15 minutes, a staff member came running in with some pre-packaged danishes. So we skipped it and went out from breakfast instead. I would still recommend this place because we were comfortable and the location is good, but I would advise to wait until the price was low. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"meh... not so good if you have a car. add $33 p/n"
parking nightmare with a fee. takes about 30 mins to have valet bring your car up. call the front desk in advance before leaving. conversely, the location is great for public transportation, which San Francisco is great at!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Overall, it was OK. Nothing really to brag about....considering at the time of stay reviews for cheaper rooms were scary. The room I stayed in was tiny. Also, you could tell the hotel had seen better days. The closet doors were falling off, dings on the walls, and because of the age of the building the water took forever to heat up when you wanted to […] shower. The staff was helpful and did not run into any issues with that. The location was great, right in Union Square. I would probably stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Overall Okay"
The only things that didn't impress me were the lack of selection at "breakfast" and it was very noisy, walls are thin so you can hear everyone. Otherwise it had great charm and was very cute/quaint. Also it was in a great location! I would stay there again for another overnighter but not as a vacationGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"CHARMING AND CUTE"
I was shocked that there is very limited of covers on the bed. There was really only a blanket and sheets! Also the breakfast was very limited without the choices of cereal or bagels! Thats the only real complaint I haveGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"location, location, location!"
hotel room's size is just ok, location is perfect, close to everything, can be noisy though because of the location. my main complaint is the valet service, worst i've ever experienced, i waited for a long time just for someone to get my car and he wait is just as long when you checkoutGenuine Expedia guest review
Just disagree bout a 33$ parking charge. Would probably go backGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cheap and adequate"
A bit dated and two double beds in the room was cramped. Bathroms and fixtures need upgrading. A really old building and it shows its tired. Reception not that friendly, but we arrived late and checked out early. Paid little and got average. It would be stuffy to complain based on that.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Good location."
I believe it is time to remodel the hotel rooms. Our bathroom appeared to be from the 50's or 60's. Water pressure was low. The window screens were in terrible shape. Good location though.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Hotel Rating"
Location is good, wifi is spotty, room very small, no one to help with luggage at check in. Reception staff is helpful. Breakfast free but very poor; just coffee, can juice and muffins. Well located close to BART and shopping.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Bad ending"
The room had that old time look but was very quiet and very convenient to mass transit. Area is a little sketchy at night; approached by an aggresive panhandler. My last day I lost my sims card and tons of pictures; the most likely spot was my checked out room. Management though polite would not let me back into the room to have a look but they did […] look around for me. It was just that I would have felt better doing my own, more thorough inspection. "Disappointing stay"
Our room needed some TLC, the bathroom door was ready to fall off, the bathroom curtain rod was broken and I had to pin the curtain closed for privacy, and the main window wouldn't stay open-a problem when there is no air conditioning. I found the bed very hard.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Another "Just ok" review"
The location was great. The hotel is a bit run down and noisy at night. The rooms were fine but small. The continental breakfast was coffee, juice, and danish. If you desire more you may buy food at the their cafe' or at Burger King next door. I would not recommend this hotel for families.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Location, Location, Location!"
Very cool, but old hotel. (1909 I think) A little remodeling could go a long way for this gem of a location. Staff was helpful and pleasant, but like the age of the hotel, things moved at a slow pace.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"It was OK, but I probably won't stay there again"
The hotel was OK, and the room was clean, but very small. When I pulled up, no one was outside to help with luggage or provide any direction on what to do with my car. The clerk inside promised to send someone out, but no one ever came out. I rated maintenance of the hotel a 2, mainly because of the elevators. In the two days that we were there, the […] elevator was very finicky, if working at all. Sometimes it wouldn't let you out on the correct floor. At first, it was kind of cute, and we chalked it up to old hotel charm. However, on the morning we needed to check out, when the elevator wasn't working at all, it was pretty annoying. My call to the front desk, with a request for an ETA on when the elevator would be working, was put on hold, and after SEVERAL minutes, the clerk never got back to me. There was also some type of construction going on inside the hotel at all hours. They were still hammering away at 2:30 a.m.! I heard other guests complaining about it as well, and requesting to be moved away from the construction. Overall, the hotel wasn't too bad, but seemed understaffed, and just didn't provide great service. The breakfast was very skimpy as well. I'm generally pretty easy going, and easy to please. However, I will choose another hotel over this one next time. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"great location"
when the best thing you can say about your room is the proximity to the ice machine was great, you know it's not a great place. although we did enjoy the bir droppings views coupled with the local sights (i.e. other guests rooms), made this place a must!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Just Okay."
Conveniently located in the downtown area, but in a very busy area. Internet didn't work very well, room was small and kind of run down, but of course it's an old hotel. Not much to brag about the breakfast. Juice and a muffin, so we went to Burger King every morning for a ham biscuit. They could do better with that, or give a coupon.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Hotel in Great Location"
Not a bad hotel.. Location wise it is perfect for Trains/Buses/Cable cars and shopping. My first room had a leaky pipe that made dripping noise.. kept me up for 4 hrs. Breakfast is included is over reach as the breakfast was OJ/Coffee and tiny sized muffins. I didn't even bother eating.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Old, well maintaned hotel with great location"
It was OK. Great location in the heart of Union Square. Friendly staff. The room was dark, with a clean and modern bathroom. Very noisy until 2 A.M. Good for business and shoppers. Not the best place for kids, particularly at night.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good Location"
Very small room, but if you only want a place to sleep and will not be spending much time in your room, it will work for you. A lot of things to see within walking distance.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Friendly staff, but extremely loud"
I found the Powell to be in a central location. Perfect for a tourist; however, the building seems to have no insulation/noise protection. It is located in a very busy section of Union Square, and we could hear absolutely everything outside (from fire alarms to people talking). So if you are a light sleeper, I do not recommend this hotel. Staff was […] very friendly and helpful though! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"SF Expierence"
The Powell Hotel has a perfect location, we walked from there to almost all the places of interest we where expecting in our trip; The SFMOMA, The Asian Museum; theaters, good restaurants and all the stores you can need. However it surprise me a lot of people asking for help (money) in the surroundings. Also is very convinience because you can get into […] the trollei or the "urban trains" just outside the hotel. and get to the embarcadero- fishermans wharf area. very good trip! "The Powell Hotel - convenient location"
Dont expect any jazz from this hotel other than its located conveniently near the mall and the public transportation. Happy hour was pretty awesome but other than that it was just a place to wash up and sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"It's just ok...what more did you want?"
Benefits are that it is inexpensive, just outside of the Powell street BART stop (for those coming from the airport), and close to the convention center. Other than that, it's a mediocre hotel with small bathrooms, overly firm mattresses, and at times confused front desk staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location! anddd thats about it"
The room has a smell about it(I guess thats because its an old building). The rooms are smaller than the pictures make them seem. very livable but not what I expected. We were lucky enough to be on the top floor so it was quieter but you could hear all of the street noise and anyone going down the hallway. It is a GREAT location! And thats probably […] why its so expensive. But you are paying mainly for the whereabouts and what its next to, not the greatness of the room. Some of the staff is excellent and some of them are sooo rude and do not explain everything or its hard to understand them. Be careful about valet parking!!! On here it says thats its $31. I got there and signed a form saying it was gonna be $43 and then at check out there was an extra $6 tax for it. Not at all what I had been budgeting for. Theres one elevator and its only on one side of the building so theres going to be a lot of walking just to get to your room(depending on where it is in the building. Other than that, it was alright. "Christmas Stay"
The hotel rooms are really really small like described in most reviews but the location is great. It is right off market and all the shopping is walking distance. The cable cars are located right by the hotel so that was convenient. Downfall though is that at night it could be a little scary for a woman. Lots of bums outside that ask for money and some […] really rude ones as well and the cops seem like they are almost used to it and don't do much about it. Also no central AC and the heater in the room did not work to well. Being that we were there for Christmas it was pretty cold at night. They said they would check the heater but never did so we just settled for an extra blanket. Don't know if I would stay here again but it was decent. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
