Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Cable cars turn around at Powell and Market streets to head back to Fisherman's Wharf.

"Too fancy for me"
Stayed at the Mark Hopkins for one night. The hotel is beautiful. Word of advice, don't attempt to drag your luggage up the hill...unless you want a serious workoutGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice. Quiet neighborhood"
Very nice overall. Loved the bar at the top of the mark and the entertainment was great!!! Only downside was that one of the front desk employees recommended a new trendy restaurant was was very disappointing.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A bit dated and overpriced"

"just one of many good hotels in SF"
Love the location. The room was small, as small as or smaller than others we've stayed at that don't have the Mark Hopkins name. Service wasn't any better or worse--it was very good. Nice view of the bay from the 3rd floor; higher floor would be a better view. Having the Top of the Mark in the hotel is cool. But the brunch is $74, and room service is […] over the top in price too. Nice to know that it's a seriously overpriced hotel that we got a good deal at thru Hotels.com. A fun experience but I wouldn't recommend it if you're paying more than we did, $180/night. Oh and parking on the street was easy, saving $50. Being near Grace Cathedral and other sights was great. "Love this place; wifi?"
I've stayed at the Mark Hopkins many times. I love the nostalgia, great rooms, great view. For some reason on this trip we couldn't get wifi to work in the room. After a call to the front desk, two people, they ended up transferring me to some remote call center. They basically shortcut the system and logged our two wifi devices from our IP address. […] Great in that we got comp'd the wifi, but it didn't work the next morning after the devices were asleep. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Top of the World in SF"
Classic old hotel, great views from Knob Hill. Would only recommned with the discount rates. Hotels 1 to 2 blocks down the hill around the Union Square area can be substantially less expensive with more ammenities (eg, free wi-fi) and more space. Nickle and dime the guest for parking, wi-fi, etc. Staff was nice, professional and helpful. Welcome to […] high-end SF hotel stays. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Historic flair without being old-fashioned."
The hotel is a landmark, directly across from the Fairmont and the cathedral on top of Knob Hill. It has historic flair but definitely attracts quite some hip people. Rooms were not big but nice, would recommend for stay for sure. It's on a very steep hill, actually not a bad workout to walk down and back up to Union Square...Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Charming hotel but walls were thin...got woken up at 5:30am by the neighboring room. Gym was pretty dismal. Complimentary car service was not available when I asked about it...disappointing as I was there for business and needed a quick ride to my officeGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nob Hill inconvenience"
okay hotel with terrible food in the restaurant and ballroom. Nob Hill is inconvenient because of difficulty of traversing steep hill to interesting areas to walk--ie Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf, Embarcadero, Chinatown. .Cable cars not always available, thus a taxi is necessary.Fairmont Hotel, across the street is far superior.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice old hotel, but fees, fees, fees..."
The hotel was beautiful. However, their fees for telecommunications are stuck about a decade or more in the past. 1) There is a local call access fee of $1.29 per call. 2) No internet access is included with the room rate, not even wi-fi. It was $15.95/day for 1Mbps, or approximately $475/month. Want to go enjoy the bar at the top of the hotel? Be prepared […] for a cover charge on wednesday through saturday. If you do go up to the Top of the Mark, the cocktails are average, the food is decent (not great) and it's all overpriced. You're there for the view, which is stunning. On the service front, everyone we encountered in the hotel was extremely courteous and friendly. The location is very convenient. You can get to many places in the city using the cable cars (all 3 lines are right out front). Be sure to grab a muni passport from an information booth at the airport. Cable car rides are $6/ea, the passports offer unlimited rides on cable cars and buses for a flat rate ($26 for a 7 day pass). Overall, I would stay here again if a few of the fees were dropped. Until then, I'll be staying somewhere where I don't have to feel like I'm going to be charged an access fee for using the elevator (thankfully they don't)... Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Grand Dame Still a Warm Welcome"
The Mark is a grand dame of San Francisco and a special part of the history of Nob Hill in particular. Not slick or showy or interested in being either. The location is glorious, great views in all directions (this is the San Francisco of a generation ago, when you got great views by being atop one of the hills and not by taking an elevator up in a […] high-rise). The staff are highly professional but not stuffy or off-putting. It's all old-fashioned in the best sense of the word, yet the mix of people staying here is remarkably diverse. "Great location, great price!"
The driveway entrance is complicated since it's as if you have to drive onto the sidewalk to get in, but the entrance itself is very nice. The concierge was super helpful, she found us reservations on christmas eve. The hotel itself is a bit dated, water pressure is low, the windows are old and quite a bit of noise and cold creeps in (very noticeabble […] in the middle of December), but the heater ran well and the bed was very comfortable. Overall, great location and we got a great deal so very happy! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Historic, but room types not as advertized"
While this hotel is gorgeous and historic, the rooms can be painfully small. We booked the "Deluxe" room which lists being able to sleep 4 adults. It is more expensive than the room listed as "Deluxe, One King Bed" which we assumed would mean that it was an upgraded room with either a sofa bed or an additional area for the 2 more adults it says it can […] sleep. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. According to the front desk, these two are the exact same room despite the price difference, and despite the hotels.com listing that 4 people can sleep in the room. The room we received did not have even a small couch or lounge chair, but a single King bed that took up the whole room. When I went back downstairs to discuss this with the front desk they had us pay even more to get a room that met what was advertized. Not the customer service I would expect from Intercontinental or especially from the Mark Hopkins. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful historic hotel"
The view of the room was outstanding.. The room itself was very tidy. The only recommendation I would have is that the beds were very soft and the plumbing was very loud. I can hear neighboring rooms flushing their toilets or just turning on the water. Other then that, the service and lobby area was very warming.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"not the best for shopping"
Beautiful hotel, great views. My only problems is that you have to walk in the almost 45 degree angled streets to go to the shopping area, it was way to far from the mall and the big stores hard to do more than once a day. (we had our two children 6 and 10 who are avid hikers)Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Classic hotel atop Nob Hill"
Excellent breakfast buffet with incredible views from Top of the Mark. Hotel staff is very friendly, housekeeping staff is top notch. My main complaint concerns the fact that it took front desk/concierge/operator forEVER to answer the phone two out of the three times I called. They need to staff more people around check out time. Overnight parking fees […] are exorbitant, hotel gym is sub-par and needs updating. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great hotel, but pricey internet + extras"
The hotel is beautiful, great neighborhood, though a decent commute to downtown. The room was comfortable and clean with a great bed. A few complaints: water pressure not string enough, bathroom mirror needs better lighting, internet is too expensive at $16 a day. Also, there has to be a better way for the doorman to hail cabs than blowing a loud harmonica […] type whistle. Maybe a blinking light of some kind. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Breakfast at the Top of the Mark"
We were provided with the front and center room on the tenth floor facing the Flood Mansion and Grace Cathedral. Windows can open! How rare is that? We could listen to the cable cars passing periodically (or close the double glazed window for quiet). Most hotels with a top floor lounge make it available only in the evening.
