The hotel location was perfect to all activities downtown. The hotel itself was clean, quiet, and had elegance to it. We'll be back!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Riverwalk"
For the amount of money we paid, I was expecting it to be a little more fancier. Bigger beds and nicer amenities. During our stay, around 1:00 a.m., our neighbors got into an argument. They presumed to get louder around 4:00 a.m. I contacted the front office and requested for them to send someone up to quiet them down. Unfortunately, our stay was not […] as pleasant as I expected. Great location however. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Love it!"
Love the history and architecture of this hotel. Wandered around. Lots to see and do around the area. Would recommend to anyone.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Ideal location. Right next to the Alamo, the Plaza and a short walk to the Riverwalk and mall. You won't need your car during your stay. The hotel is very historic and lovely. Rooms are nice, but the A/C was a problem. We had two rooms and both stayed warm and stuffy overnight with A/C on in Dec. Breakfast buffet is amazing. Our grandkids loved the […] ghost stories and history. We would definitely return. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

we stayed at the menger because of the history. a beautiful hotel with the perfect downtown location. across the street from the alamo and riverwalk. walk out the door and you are at the mall. everyone at the hotel was very helpful. if we go back again to san antonio, we will definitely stay at the menger.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Lot of History but Missing Conveniences"
This is a well located hotel where the River walk can be joined just steps away and the Alamo is just across the street. Established in 1859, the hotel shows its age. Cigar smell permeates the lobby and smoking is allowed in the cigar store. At check-in one is asked to sign an agreement not to smoke in your room. Considering that hotels attract tourists […] with varying tastes, it was surprising not to find a single tea bag (only coffee) in the room nor as part of the morning's complimentary beverages in the lobby. But these are 'minor' inconveniences compared to not getting the front desk manager's full attention as he 'assisted' us in a half-hearted manner. A savvy manager would have directed one of his staff to tend to a client given that he himself could not provide us his full attention. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Excellent location and a Pure Pleasure"
Although we wanted a room in the older part of the hotel (haunted part!) due to conventions at that time, we were in the newer part of the hotel with a room overlooking the pool. It was beautiful! The service at the hotel, as well as in the dining room was outstanding. The room was very clean and ample size for the 4 in our family. The location of the […] Menger is perfect....within walking distance of some wonderful attractions: The Alamo, the Riverwalk, shopping, dining, etc. We had a truly wonderful time, and will recommend the Menger to anybody and everybody who asks where to stay in San Antonio! "Close to all sights"
I really enjoyed my stay at the historical Menger. I have stayed with you once before and was pleased then too. This time the room was not what I had requested but they took care of it right away. So pleased with the location to all the sights I wanted to see and could walk to all of them. The hotel staff were excellent and made me feel welcome.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Check in took along time. Water was in the room but was charged $8.00 a bottle if u opened it. Also did not have a flat screen TV. Ask for a room close to the elevator but was at the end of the hall. The bathroom was cvery small an towels were kept underneath the sink. On the day of check out went down to get a cart to carry the baggage down to the […] car an eas told that they could not let us bring it but they would hav to come up an get them for us.So for the price felt that we would have been better staying at another hotel. "Great experiance."
No parking spots. Hotel will charge you 2O per day to park your car. But other than that it was a great experiance to stay therel. It's a historic hotel and if it gets remodeled then it will loose it's reputation as a historic place. I would go there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Menger"
I will never stay in this hotel again. Once I mentioned that I had made my arrangements thru Hotels.com the seemd to be rude to me. One gentleman even kept looking at me up & down with his nose up in the air. I guess he didn't like my choice of credit card either. Once in the room, the room was extreme warm. We had no control of the air. It didn't work. […] Once in the showere the hot water kept coming in and out. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

I love that we could walk area attractions from the hotel. We also got to spend some time exploring the hotel and admiring the interior decor and museum style showcasings of the original era. The breakfast buffet was delicious, and the kids 6 to 11 ate free!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Menger in San Antonio"
I absolutely loved the Menger!!!! It was probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in. The history was fascinating, the place was beautiful, the location was perfect and the people were the best. San Antonio is an excellent winter getaway. STAY AT THE MENGER.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Loved Staying at the Menger"
Super location. The staff was really friendly and chock full of history on the hotel and surrounding area. The restaurant was excellent, and the mango ice cream was even better than described. The room could have used a dusting, which is why I gave cleanliness a 4. I'd say give it a try, unless you're afraid of a few dust bunnies.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

We loved breakfast in the main dining room. Room was simple but how can you put a price on overlooking the Alamo? Saw three ghosts, two in the long hallway and one in a closet. If the like Texas history don't miss staying at the Menger. Ken from Princeton, New JerseyGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Menger Hotel Still Charms"
We went for the history and were not disappointed. The victorian lobby, the Teddy Roosevelt bar and the main lobby all charm. Our room was just o.k. Heat didn't work, carpets buckled in places etc. Time for a rehab. We asked to have the heat checked but it wasn't fixed, and also had poor service one morning in the Colonial Room restaurant. Hence, less […] than satisfied with service. But still, if you enjoy historic places, the Menger is worth a stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

There is a certain charm about the Menger. You know its old when you step in, but that is all well, even the rooms are very quaint and clean. All the employees were pleasant and friendly. My wife and I enjoyed our stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Hotel-Tiny Bed"
We have not had a quiet hotel in the last three outings, but the Menger was very quiet even though it was Alamo bowl weekend. The location was as good as you can get without being right on the Riverwalk itself. Only drawback was that the double beds were tiny! Otherwise, great experience and great hotel!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Menger Hotel, San Antonio"
I have stayed here several times in the past, but this was first stay in at least 5 years. The hotel facilities and service have declined noticeably - a sad development for an old favorite and a land mark hotel. The room was dated and worse, filthy. Not once during stay did anyone at hotel ask about our room, our stay, or if we needed anything. Felt […] treated like a one and done tourist. Even the service in the bar was indiffereent at best. "location was good...front desk...not so much"
Front desk staff was unhelpful and had attitude...but room was comfy and our view overlooked the Alamo. Room service was nice and promt. Location was the best feature of all, but really I would stay somewhere else next time...much nicer hotels and staff at the other high end chain hotels we've stayed at in the area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Always wanted"
I'd wanted to stay in the Menger for years but had not had the opportunity to visit San Antonio. This is a GREAT hotel if you don't require the most modern and luxurious. "The Menger Hotel - NOT a 4 star experience"
Location could hardly be better, but the service was VERY sub-standard. We had paid in advance for a balcony room for 3 nights. When we got to our room there was no balcony, the room was VERY small and had exposed plumbing on the ceiling. Our view consisted of the wall of another building with boarded-over windows. A call to the front desk brought no […] resolution that night. We were told that there were no balcony rooms available. We were assured that we would be moved to one the next morning (probably by 10:00 AM). Next morning we went to breakfast, toured the Alamo, and arrived back at the hotel about 11:00. Front desk told us that balcony room was ready but our luggage had not yet been moved. We decided then to move the luggage ourselves. Upon reaching the new room we saw that it had obviously just been vacated and had not yet been attended to by housekeeping. It was another hour before we could settle in the new room. While the appearance of the hotel's public areas was faultless, my wife and I both noticed several areas (including, especially, one of the elevators) that gave off a very unpleasant odor. We had requested a 4 AM wake-up call on the morning of departure. We left the room a bit after 5 AM and never did receive the wake-up call. The hotel did compensate us by way of two free drinks in their bar and breakfast on our last full day (although the breakfast was provided at my specific request, since I did not feel that two drinks was adequate compensation for not receiving the room I paid for on the first night and there was no adjustment made in the total paid). Perhaps the experience we had was way outside the norm, but we would not recommend this hotel, nor would we stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I have stayed here before but this time, I was not impressed at all. The bed were hard as can be and there was so much hair all over the bathroom that you could have made a wig! It was distcusting. When checking out, we let the front desk know and they did not seem surprised. While they did comp the valet charge, this should not be something to deal […] with at any hotel. "Not The Best"
We had two rooms together. One room was hot. My kids were burning up in their room. Our room was cold. When it got cold that afternoon, We were told the heat doesn't come on until 9pm. I've never heard of that before in a hotel. The location is great, but that's about it. It's an older hotel, and I understand that, but it needs some updating. The most […] irritating thing is we wanted to go to Church on Sun around the corner at 11. So, we asked if we could check out at 12:15-12:30 so we wouldn't have to leave our luggage at the desk while we went to church. They said NO! Can you believe it? I've never had a hotel say no to 30 minutes. Longer I can understand. Parking is $25,which I understand, but we waited FOREVER for our car. Anyway, unless you get a great price, I would find another hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location"
Our stay at the Menger was good. The valet was professional. The guy at the front desk was nice as well. Our room was simple and very clean. However, I expected a little more. The room was too sparce and plain. I think the Menger could do a little better on the decor of their rooms. The appearance of the bedrooms are similar to what you might get from […] a motel 6 or best western. Which are not horrible, I just expected a little more luxury for the price I paid. Either way, we still enjoyed our stay because the location was perfect. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Menger Hotel - Good location, all else sucked!"
We booked the Menger because of the convenient location by the Riverwalk and good rate. I booked 2 rooms for 4 adults, and when we arrived for check-in the hotel clerk (Alfonso) tried to deny us our second room. He claimed that because of the hotel's "policy" with Expedia (Hotels.com), the second room was only a REQUEST, not guaranteed. We pointed out […] that we were CONFIRMED for 2 rooms, and had also PAID for 2 rooms at the time of booking. He acted quite put out by all this, and did us a "big favor" of granting our second room "request" (as he kept insisting it was just that). Our rooms were nowhere near each other, but we didn't make a big deal about it, just glad to finally get in there! The hotel itself has lost much of its old charm, and now just looks shabby, in dire need of updates and renovations. The furniture in the lobby looks worn out, and the rooms are relatively small with limited cable TV options. There are no mini-bars or mini-fridges in the rooms (which we use to store our own drinks and food), and the bedspread and carpets have seen better days. The walls are so thin that I could literally hear clearly every time someone in a room above us or next to us used the toilet or took a shower. Also, the showerheads are still the old kind that spew several gallons of water a minute. Additionally, our room faced the street (Alamo side), and the outside noise really permeated, making sleep tough to come by. Some modernized (and energy-efficient) windows would probably help that problem immensely. Speaking of energy, the A/C is an old dial thermostat, which had been set at the lowest setting (somewhere between 50 and 60 degrees) when we arrived there, but the room's actual temperature was probably about 74 or 75. There was no way to cool it down more than that so we made the best of it. The Menger Hotel has had glory days in the past, but they are definitely behind it, unless and until some serious renovations, updates and beautification gets implemented. "Remember the Alamo!"
This hotel is located right across a side street from the Alamo. If you are a history buff this is the place for you! "Adjust Your Expectations"
This hotel is beautiful, and a piece of history, but you have to adjust your expectations regarding room size and so on. It's more like a European hotel. The mattresses need to be replaced. "Convenient"
I have stayed here in the past and had a great experience so I decided to go back. On this most recent trip, I was initially roomed in the older part of the hotel. I didn't really like the room I was offered and staff was able to change my room without difficulty and no questions asked. The new room I was placed in had a nice balcony and was well situated […] for a week long stay. The only complaint I have is that the room had ants. It was not a lot, but enough to be inconvenient. Overall, this is probably a three star hotel but its location is fabulous. Close to the Riverwalk, directly across from the Alamo, around the corner from the mall (if you're so inclined), etc. which bumps it to a 3.5 - 4 star rating. If you're looking for a decent, clean place or a place just to crash, this is the place for you. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
