Kailua-Kona is the epicenter of shopping and recreation on Hawaii’s western shore. Big-game fishers delight off its waters, while shoppers reel in deals along Alii Drive. The Kailua-Kona area is a hiker’s paradise because many of its best beaches are accessible only by foot. Inland, the scent of coffee permeates the air as plantations harvest precious Kona beans. Nearby coffee farms open for tours.

Great location, next to beach area. Rooms very small and the bathrooms also. We were put in a room next to construction room. After calling we were moved. Had to get 2nd room.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great, no complaints"
What a great place to stay when going to Kona. It was within walking distance of everything that we wanted to go see and do. The rooms were great, and the amenities were awesome. Break fast buffet was also good. No complaints.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not bad at all"
Sometimes I wonder when reading reviews what do people think. My idea of reviews is you through out the worst and the best and you read the ones in the middle, since these are the people giving the most honest reviews. So here is my review. Overall I was surprised. This is not and will never be the 5 star resorts found in Waikoloa, nor should it be […] for the price they are charging. I would give a 4 out of 5 for what they are offering. It was clean, bed not too bad and it did give off a bit of a Hawaii vibe. If I had to complain about anything the pillows are not to good, but do I find any hotel pillows to my liking for that is probably more my fault than theirs. The big plus is location location location. It is right there in Kona. For me Kona holds a special place in my heart because I am an Ironman. This is where the Ironman World Championships are held every year in October. Having the chance to run on the roads where such great athletes run was great and having this right out my doorstep was awesome. Plus the Kona Aquatics center was right down the road and I got to swim (free by the way) in one great pool. All in all don't listen to the negative reviews. It is a nice place, checked us in early and clean. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Location"
Hotel location right on the water was beautiful while still within walking distance of everything in town - shops, restaurants, beach were all close by. Hotel staff were very friendly. Room was huge and had wonderful views. The rooms are a little dated but the size and location more than makes up fo it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great spot for families in Kona"
We loved our stay at the Royal Kona resort. We stayed in the Alii tower, which seems a bit ratty tatty on first glance, but the rooms were nice and spacious with a big lanai with a view of the water. We enjoyed the music from the luaus that took place on the hotel grounds the two nights we were there. The pool was lovely for kids, with a shallow pool […] for the very small ones, and my daughter was able to try out snorkeling in the hotel's lagoon, where we saw several kinds of fish and a sea turtle. The location was convenient to many restaurants, and the bar/grill on site (Don's mai tai) has nice atmosphere, good food, a great spot to watch the sunset. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great Value for the Money"
This was an older hotel but the location was great and so were the views we were able to check in a bit early and they even upgraded our room from an ocean view to a corner ocean front room. We had an awesome time here and would love to return and stay again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Our stay at the Royal Kona was great, the location was perfect as it was close to everything. We had a great room with a fantastic view. The staff was very friendly and helpful. "Good location but a bit worn out"
Beautiful location (as most places in Hawaii) but the room looked a bit worn out and pretty small. The bed wasn't too comfortable (too soft) - at least for my back. I found it a bit overpriced. If you like local folk entertainment it might be good for you (twice a week shows from 6-8pm that you can't not to hear from your room if you don't participate). "Great Deal and Convenient Location"
Went to Kona for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The RKR was a very convenient base, close enough to the airport, shops and restaurants. Whilst it's true that the hotel is a little dated, it's been well maintained given it's age. All room amenities are in good working condition and housekeeping did a great job keeping everything nice […] and clean. "Ok for the location..."
The location was convenient to all kind of restaurants and gifts shops; however my daughter and I were on the back tower of the hotel next to a little street which anyone could easy have access into the hotel so we didn’t feel very secure. Even though the hotel was right on the beach there was no beach access cause everything was very rocky for the […] exception of a small area that it was ok to do a lil snorkeling. "next to the happenings"
It was a great stay, plenty of towels, shampoo, soap but only 1 kona coffee since I do not care about it, it didn't make any difference. Got higher floor (6th) with beautiful sunrires (mountain side) the lanai sliding door are sound proof so you can rest without listening to the noises from the restaurants and bars next to the hotel. They let me check […] out late ( a must). One of the best spot of the hotel is next to Don's bar: they have sofa chairs so you can contemplate the ocean and the view of Kona. Don's mai tais are great too they close I think at 10pm). Very friendly staff, huge clean room but the bathroom has water stains and mold. You have to pay for wifi in the room. Expedia is right there to help you. I book snorkling / sea caves trip through them: Sea quest (5 hs) and it was amazing. You can check in for your Hawaiian Air flight at the lobby. "Wonderful Value"
I was pleasantly surprised by my stay at the Royal Kona Resort. The grounds are beautifully maintained and reflect the character of the area vegetation. The rooms were large, cool and clean. The TV worked well and the small sink with a coffee pot was a welcome amenity. There was a nice balcony outside the room which allowed me to listen to the birds […] and watch the sunrise in the morning. The location is fantastic. It is at the end of the strip of local attractions and restaurants, near a bus public bus stop and well within walking distance to local shopping and banking. The mai tai festival took place while we were there. It was a real treat to participate for the benefit of local community organizations. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Pleasant Condo/hotel"
A good location and reasonable rates. This condo is more palatable to those who prefer a home to a hotel room. Clean and comfortable with nice grounds and pool area. Although it is on the beach, this is not the best beach in the area. High winds are whipping every afternoon.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Dramatic location and architecture--looks like the superstructure of an oceanliner on a promontory into the bay--and very open and airy. Large rooms, comfortable beds, quite small bathrooms and skimpy on the amenities (shampoo, conditioner, etc.) The Royal Kona is aging (stucco peeling and discolored in places) and probably needs some remodeling (bathrooms). […] Only two slow elevators in the Alii Tower (the main one of three), and we could never find the stairs. The lobby-level famous-name restaurant/bar, however, serves a full menu only on three weekend days and only the bar menu for the other four. However, there is a full-range of other eateries only walking minutes away. Desk and concierge staff were very pleasant and helpful. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Mostly above average except for the food and driks"
It' s a big complex- 3 large buildings - but seems quite empty. Skip the restaurant which is only open 2 or 3 evnings a week as the food is unimpressive. Breakfast is equally uninteresting. Just walk next door or farther down the street for more interesing food at the same price. Also skip the bar - the drinks are lacking in any reasonable amount of […] liquor. "Excellent location, so - so hotel."
This is the second time we have stayed here, the last was 4 years ago. You couldn't ask for a better location in Kona. Our room was an ocean front, large and a huge lanai. Had AC but slept with the 2 sliding doors open to hear the waves crashing and to get the cool night air. the couch in the room however was so filthy, that we asked them to exchange […] it. They said the didn,t have another, so I had them cover the couch and chair with sheets, otherwise we would not have used them. I have seen cleaner couches out for the garbage. When the guy from housekeeping came to cover it he saw it and said "Oh my goodness". The hotel is getting run down and needs to be renovated. Sliding door locks don't work so they have attached another lock to the door and the frame. The bathroom was okay but had to be slammed if you wanted it to stay closed. Carpets are worn and it is definately a 3 star hotel. After saying this, we would stay there again. Depends on the room location, but we had a great view and the room we could put up with. Staff extremely friendly and accomodating. restaurant only open for dinner 3 nights a week, but food is good, and also great location with tables right on the ocean. The staff was very nice. We arrived three days prior to our daughters so we ask at the desk, if they could put them on the same floor and close to our room. Stayed a single saturday night..note extra $10 night for parking and extra charge $10 for internet. For how much they charge parking should at least be included. "Royal Kona Hotel"
The hotel was on a cliff and we chose an oceanfront room which had a beautiful view. While not in the newest part of the hotel, the rooms were clean and nice. The mattresses were a bit saggy. "Good location but past its prime and so-so service"
We spent 4 days here Dec 2011. The location is decent - lots of interesting shops and restaurants. As far a location goes - you cannot go wrong - Kailua is a great place to get you to interesting locations.... The Bar area by the ocean is fantastic. We didn't attend the luau but it seemed popular. The lagoon area has fish and apparently turtles sometimes. Negatives: […] Rooms feel like a motel room. They do worse than a motel by not even providing the daily bag of morning coffee. We spent time at the nearby Sheraton and were regretting not opting for it (but note that the Sheraton and other resorts are self-contained) but were at the same time happy to be close to the shops and restaurants. If I had to visit again, I'd pay a bit more for the Sheraton. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
