"A bit overrated"
We selected the hotel because of its great location and high ratings. I don't mind paying the (high) rate I did, but expect an exceptional experience when I pay that. The room and hotel were nice, but there was nothing that I would note as above average. The room was a bit worn as were the hallways. The carpet in our room had a large stain and the bathroom […] walls and fixtures had makeup, toothpaste and other blemishes. And the bed was far from luxurious (small pillows, hard and squeaky mattress). The pool area bar was nice and quite busy but was generally filled with 20-30 year olds for most of the afternoon and all evening, relegating those who wanted a quiet or family experience to the morning only. Again not a poor experience, but felt I could have gotten similar or better accommodations for less, elsewhere. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Rooms are extremely dated, furniture is worn, curtains were dirty and torn, beds are on old squeky box springs ( dont look under the bed), this a pet friendly hotel so be prepared to hear the barking of both small and large dogs, guest overnight parking was high at $41 a night. Not what you would expect for $275.00 a night. The upside we could find […] was the easy access to the psrts of Gas Lamp we love. We will not be staying here again! "We Didn't Want to Leave"
My husband and I wanted to get away for our 25th anniversary, but our son graduated high school and we had a party for him, so we decided to take a long weekend trip to San Diego for the July 4th weekend as a belated getaway. The staff was so friendly, our room was spacious and very comfortable. They even sent up a bottle of champagne because of our […] anniversary and arranged a reservation for us at a restaurant with a view of the July 4th fireworks over Mission Bay. I liked that the shower had a rack with full sized shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel with pumps. Very convenient. We were within walking distance of the trolley and lots of bars and restaurants. We were able to take the trolley to the USS Midway and Old Town. It was a great homebase for a visit to Balboa Park. I really appreciated the blister kit that was in the minibar. It was reasonably priced and saved me having to take my blistered heels down to CVS. I was really sad to leave and will definitely be going back. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice, good location"
A very nice hotel, good location in Gaslamp district very near lots of bars/restaurants/attractions. Mostly a very quiet hotel, and I loved that it's so dog-friendly (was able to bring my small dog with no problems whatsoever). However, for the room price, I'd expect a little bit "more"…..it was definitely "very nice", but not amazing. The pool is nice, […] but again, I felt it could've been nicer for the overall hotel pice. We thought we were upgrading from the Palomar, but….maybe we should've just saved the $$ & kept our original reservation. The staff was lovely, and liked that they had loaner bikes (but, only 2….so you had to act quickly in order to secure one). Room & overall hotel was very clean. Overall: very nice hotel, but maybe a bit on the overpriced side. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We love Kimpton Hotels and try to stay in one, wherever we go. We often travel with our dogs and Kimpton Hotels roll out the red carpet for them. This time, it was just us. The Hotel Solamar is a little jewel, right downtown San Diego. It is whimsical and welcoming. The room is well appointed and comfortable. We look forward to our next stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Stayed here before. Liked it just as much. Nice rooms, great staff, & sweet pool area. Little pricey for parking, but it is downtown San Diego. Good trip nice place to stay. Didn't make the happy hour this time. That's a must great way to meet new people.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice Hotel and Comfortable."
Great Hotel location and I enjoyed the stay here. Roomy King size scenic room and bathroom. Only two downfalls I saw was the parking which is steep at $41 a night and my jacuzzi tub didn't work =[... Other then that highly recommend itGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Location, stylish, great food and comfortabl"
Room service quality is wonderful which is always a plus when you're a vegetarian or vegan on the road. The rooms are gorgeous and you get all walks of life in this hotel so that its not too intimidating with its 'cool' image. that's what i appreciated most as i like diversity. Great restaurants and bars within walking distance. We'll be back.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

For the price of a night's stay you think they would include your parking fee. But no, it was an extra $40 just to park my car here for one night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great place to stay and take in a Padres Game!"
Great customer service, delicious and healthy room service, and a great location. The happy hour is a nice touch in the evenings and so is the fruit water in the lobby. Will stay again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I have to give credit to the valet team. They were not only helpful, but more than anything, they were always upbeat and received us and our requests with a smile. They made this experience very enjoyable. The rooms were spectacular as well. I requested the Deluxe Room with a King Bed, and was really happy with it. "Smack dab in the Gaslamp district"
Wonderful stay. However, be warned that the hotel is undergoing construction presently. Also, if you are looking for peace and quiet, ask for a room on the opposite side of the music and noise. "Close to gas lamp district"
Location that's in gas lamp district is nice, but definitely not 4 star hotel, 3-3.5 max. If I paid $80-100 a night I would be completely satisfied, but paying $170 a night and $41 for valet parking I was expecting something amazing, and only got an average experience. Nothing differentiates this place from the 3*, holiday inn, best western or others...Rooms […] were just average, dated bathroom, that was cheaply remolded, lot of mold on the ceiling in the bathroom, cheap shampoo/body wash. Decoration in the room just seems all over the place, and not fitting the space. Beds squeak like crazy, I couldn't move without waking up my wife, not very comfortable either. Free coffee in the loby in the morning was nice. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Love Kimpton hotels, stay at one whenever possible. Solamar is a wonderful place to stay. Only downside was our room location. We upgraded to a suite with a jacuzzi tub and it was right off the pool with a small, but private sitting area. However, it was also located next to the gym. . . Treadmills are good, but not at 5:00 in the morning. Definitely […] will stay here again and will upgrade again, but will request a room down the hall from the gym. Right smack in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter, the hotel is close to great food and great nightlife. The Fish Market and the USS Midway are within walking distance (about a mile). Loved it! Jacuzzi room was the way to go! Room service was prompt and professional. Room was comfortable and all around fabulous. Poolside foods and drinks were my only complaint... service was very slow and a bit grumpy, and drinks were WAY too sweet. Other than that, Loved every bit of our stay!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"5 day trip with boyfriend"
Booked the solamar for a 5 night trip with my boyfriend. You can't beat the location, steps from gaslamps bars, restaurants and shops. Staff was very accommodating and kind. Rooms were cleaned daily with no problems. Pool area was great, always found a chair and even if you're walking around thinking 75 degrees isn't tanning weather you're wrong! The […] pools on the roof of 4th floor and gets very hot. It's great. Bartenders attentive and nice. Fun atmosphere, good food. Many reviews complain about noise if you have a room facing the pool. We did have a room facing the pool and yes, there's music and often evening events on the area surrounding the pool at night but unless you have a newborn or are over 85 it's really not an issue. I was sick most if my trip with a bad cold and the noise didn't keep me up at night. It's a great hotel choice for the location, price and accommodations. No complaints. I'd stay at the solamar again next time I'm in San Diego. I'm a seasoned traveler and don't have anything bad to say. Rooms were on the smaller side but very clean and modern. Well done solamar. "Not what I had hoped"
For the price per night, I had expected more. I could have stayed at a cheaper hotel and been just as satisfied. I was right by the ice machine and had to listen to it and people scooping ice all night. The room was trendy, but not great. Was really excited to stay here until I walked in the room. The hotel it self is beautiful but our room on the 9th floor(pet-free) was gross. There was a red stain on the curtains resembling blood. "EXCELLENT LOCATION but a little noisy"
This hotel was wonderful! My husband & I stayed here for our 6th Anniversary/Babymoon. The location was FANTASTIC a block away from 5th ave, a lively street w/ tons of bars & restaurants. We rented a car but got lucky & found street parking (overnight parking:$40/night) and just paid the meter until 6p. They have a great FREE WINE Happy Hour which we […] took full advantage of ea night. It is definitely a PARTY hotel though or for the 'youngins'. The 1st 2nights we were there we heard a lot of our neighbors drinking loudly/partying. We were young once so it didn't bother us to the point where we had to complain but it would've been nice to know ahead of time. ALSO- ask for a room in the wing away from Island Ave. because there's a rooftop club/bar, Stingaree, that blasts its music very loudly and so we were getting the noise from the hallway & the windows. Great amenities and we had FREE wi-fi! Would definitely stay there again! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great location for young couples!!!"
I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Solamar. I have never stayed in a Kimpton hotel before, but I was quite pleased. The staff were very friendly and helpful, but never overbearing or obtrusive. One of the reasons I changed my reservation from another hotel to the Solamar was because of the wine hour. I wasn't sure what to expect (free wine, […] could it actually be good?), but a limited selection of decent red/white wines and a quiet, intimate atmosphere in which to enjoy them along with my significant other was a great way to start off the evening. You couldn't ask to be better situated re: distance to either the convention center or general Gaslamp attractions (bars/restaurants/shops). We walked to any destination in the Gaslamp. Parking per day is quite costly, but since we didn't rent a car it wasn't an issue for us. An occasional affordable cab drive was very reasonable, especially considering the convenience of not having to drive ourselves. The staff were courteous, attentive and friendly throughout our stay. While our room was not large, it more than accommodated us and our belongings. The only (slight) negative was that the bed could probably have been a bit more comfortable, but that may just be a personal preference...I didn't have any difficulty sleeping, I just prefer softer bedding. If I come to San Diego in the future, I certainly hope that I can book a room here again! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

I've never been partial to any hotels in particular. This hotel stay was different, we were made to feel that we were the most important guests in the hotel. Service was impeccable, the hotel was gorgeous and the location was perfect. I feel spoiled and if the choice is available will always choose a Kimpton brand hotel over the competitors. The price […] is marginally more than what I would normally be willing to pay but it is absolutely worth every penny. "Good weekend getaway hotel, esp for baseball fans"
Pros of the Hotel Solamar: An upscale hotel at a reasonable price; pet-friendly; incredible food (although it's a bit on the pricey side); very comfortable accomodations in well-appointed rooms; excellent service; you cannot hear any street noise; good location (a short walk to Petco Park, 5th Avenue, restaurants, etc.). Cons: Paper-thin walls make […] for noisy nights; no coffee maker in the hotel room; $10/day internet access fee...and did I mention that you can hear EVERYTHING that goes on inside the hotel from inside your room? Other notes: This is a good hotel for a romantic getaway, especially if you are young and like to party (we do not fit into that latter category). The room is stocked with a wide assortment of alcohol (Kettle One Vodka, liqueurs, beer) and even an intimacy kit. But if you are sober (like us) or just want to save some money, you can use the in-room fridge for cheaper beverages found at the CVS Pharmacy or Ralph's grocery store, both of which are walking distance away. We would stay there again, as long as we have saved our money for food and don't count on doing a lot of sleeping. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great in some aspects, but missing the basics"
The Solamar is very trendy and in a very good location. My girlfriend and I walked to almost everywhere we wanted to go (restaurants, Petco Park, bars, and lounges). However, considering how much I spent, the hotel has some glaring flaws. First, the door connecting adjacent rooms, which we kept closed, was very thin and at 3 am was woken up for about […] a hour by the people next door talking. They weren't talking loud -- it was the door. The main purpose of a hotel is to sleep and I couldn't do that. Second, the maid never cleaned my room. We checked in Friday and checked out Sunday. The maid came to our room at 4 pm on Saturday and we told her we'd be out in a hour and to come back then. When we got back later that night, the room was still a mess. I called the front desk but they said all the maid had gone home for the night and they must've thought I said I didn't want service. In my conversation with the maid, I said "Can you come back in a hour?" and she said "Okay". It doesn't get much clearer than that. Third, the down from the bed was coming out the entire stay. The glass nightstand was covered in feathers by Sunday morning. The hotel is very trendy and swanky, but they're missing some very essential and basic details that really left a bad taste in my mouth. I told the front desk, but they didn't seem to care much and didn't offer to make my stay more enjoyable in any way. For these reasons, I suggest you take your money and stay in another hotel.
