I really enjoyed the Porto Vista. The location was great, easy access to downtown, Sea World, Balboa Park, Coronado, and easy on and off of Interstate 5. The view from the restaurant/bar was great. Hotel was really, staff was really friendly, clean place, good location, great food. Maybe not the best choice for families. We had a party in the room next to us that lasted until 4:25am, that made it a hard night and after several calls to the front desk they finally went to bed. Needless to say when my kids woke up and me and my wife made it back […] to life after the long night. I didn't worry about telling them to be quite. I let them play hard and when I got the call from the hotel, I ignored the request since the call came from the same people that kept me up until 4:25am. Other than that we had a great time. The hotel did compensate for the trouble and gave us the free parking for our stay since the room was already pre paid. So that was cool, especially since I wasn't trying or expecting to get a discount at all. My favorite part was the artwork and the food was awesome. I would stay there again but would ask to be tucked away in a corner or somewhere away from the party crowds. Read more

Everything was great, except the parking, there was an event going on and i guess they share parking so we had to either pay to park or park in the street. Staff was very nice and said they would keep an eye on the cars.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Porto Vista.We were there with two children who were running a muck in the hotel lobby, restaurant and outdoor patio. Everyone we interacted with (valet, reception, waiters and waitresses) were exceptionally nice and helpful.

This is a nice hotel, well positioned for Little Italy, and overall my experience was positive. However, there were a couple of minor problems worth noting. The hotel provided a crib for our (15 month old) baby, but it was not very comfortable. He much preferred sleeping on our (very nice) king size bed, and so it became very hard to put him down unless […] he was very tired. We also had consistent problems with our room keys, which, despite the suggestions of the desk staff, were not attributable to being kept next to a cellphone. Additionally, on one night, there was a lot of noise from a wedding reception on the roof. I've often gone to Porto for food or drinks as I love the view. I was excited to stay, albeit it only for one night and it sort of went like this: -The guy at the front desk was just ok. Although we were "2 Adults", he hands us 1 card for our welcome drink. -We inquire about the location of the room (it's in the far back), request if there's a better […] location, he says he can't control that...really? Then who can? -The Bartender at the Glass Door was great. Called downstairs inquiring about the whole 1 welcome cocktail thing. So it sort of made up for it. -Noise, as in the busy neighbors upstairs and the super active neighbors next door. A simple thing like maybe just moving the headboard away from the wall a couple of inches will really help! Read more

The overall feeling of the hotel is we spent all our money on the lobby and restaurant and nothing on updating the rooms. The hotel looks like it was a motel in the 60's and the rooms haven't been changed. The bathroom was tiny, the toilet had a beat-up seat and the shower had the smallest shower head I've ever seen. We didn't have a remote for our […] tv and called down both nights and finally the valet came to our room at 10pm to try to program the remote. After 20 min's we said thank you very much. They only had styrofoam cups in the room, we requested glasses and were told we had to go to the restaurant. On the second day we came back to our room, and the maid had not replaced the toilet paper. There was no spare roll in the room. We called the front desk and were told someone would be coming up, 1/2 later we left for dinner, we were told the guy just left for the room with the roll. When we came back we had to wait at the front desk and ask for a roll of toilet paper. They didn't even think to put it in the room while we were gone. We were told countless times how under-staffed they were. We wanted to stay in an independent, non-chain hotel, but next time we will stay at a Hilton or Marriott. Read more

It seems the hotel must be undergoing a renovation and we received a non renovated room. The room was old and cheap feeling. It was nothing like the photos on their website. This is a boutique hotel that gets most of its mileage out of the great location. It's only a $7-8 cab ride away from the gaslight district in downtown san diego and is in Little Italy, so the surrounding area is fun to explore on foot and there are lots of restaurants to choose from in the vicinity. This hotel looked nice from the outside. Then when you go to your room it's like a motel that had walls built around it. I would not stay here again or recommend it to anyone. The neighborhood was nice, but that has nothing to do with the hotel and how comfortable your stay will be there. Do not stay here, there are other hotels in the area.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. They took time to give us directions and called us transportation. The beds were comfortable and clean. The only complaint I had was that the toiletries were used. I would recommend this hotel and if I ever go back to san Diego I would stay there.

I stayed at this hotel because it seemed like a great place for the price. You know what they say, you get what you pay for. I should have just paid the extra money for a nicer hotel. I was with my daugther for our vacation. As soon as she opened the door we felt like the the room was old, stale, and only clean on the "outside". We were affraid to work […] on the floor without shoes. The carpet seemed dirty and grungy. The bathroom had an odor that never went away. The room was "cleaned" every day, but they never gave us new soap. Outside noise was also a big problem. Since the rooms face the outside, every noise was heard. We heard everything from airplanes, people talking/fighting and kids running the walkways as if they're trying out for the track team. The noise got so bad my daughter was awakened from a deep sleep. The final insult was the parking scam. They charge for parking at the hotel even if you're a guess. What they don't tell you is that you can park on the street for free. This was not my worse hotel stay, but it's certainly close. I will NEVER stay at the Porto Vista again. Read more

This place is like a chihuahua, "it" thinks it's something bigger than it is. Parking fee, "Incidental" fees. New paint and weird wall sized pictures can't change the stripes on this zebra/donkey. Not impressed with anything from this place A-Z.

Our experience was not at all satisfactory. When we arrived to our room, we had to call the house keeper because our pillows had hair on them and the sink was also dirty with hair. When we got ready for bed, there were a group of guys smoking and talking really loud outside our room, so much that my husband had to ask them to hang out somewhere else. […] Unfortunately, we were unable to sleep because the hotel was very noisy and people were coming in and out, yelling, laughing (it is more like a party hotel) until 4 am. We really enjoyed our stay at the Porta Vista. After check in we went up to their bar on the 4th floor for our complementary drink. Loved the view. Walking distance from Little Italy food and bars. A few minutes (driving) from the San Diego Zoo, Petco Park and downtown. Nice and safe neighborhood. While i can't say I was completely unsatisfied because of the prime location to downtown and right around the corner of Little Italy, the hotel itself is quite dated. I kept telling my wife we got a great deal, but I guess you get what you pay for. I would have given the hotel a 3 overall were it not for the cramped room, initial odor in the room, not […] toilet paper, and maybe 19" box tv. If it were just for these items, I would have been satisfied to an extent. The first morning I woke up I felt like I had a few bug bites that I just attributed to being on vacation at an amusement park with the kids. The final night I began itching non-stop on my feet and right hand. Friday morning I see more pronounced marks on my hand and a few on my feet. I let the staff know and he said he'd tell the manager. Upon check out I received an apology and was told a manager would contact me. 3 days later, no phone call. Bed Bugs were obviously present and I'm still suffering for it. Do not book this dated hotel w/ very sub par accomodation. Read more

The Porto Vista hotel is beautiful and extremely convenient to downtown (although downtown's one way streets are terribly inconvenient). The decor of the hotel common areas is lovely, rather high class for the price. There are several outdoor seating areas and a marvelous open rooftop with views of the ocean and the neighborhood, including the airport […] if you like watching planes land. The interior of the rooms is simple but nicely done. Downsides include the elevator, which at times was brutally slow. We, along with others, sometimes had to wait longer than five minutes in the lobby waiting for it to arrive. With rooms up to the fifth floor, this could be a real problem. There is a secondary elevator which was much less used, but it is not available from the lobby, so most everyone uses the main one. As I recall, the description of the hotel here on hotels.com says there is parking available. What I do not recall seeing is that it is valet only. When we stayed the rate was $22 a day. This is somewhat outrageous considering that a guest could valet park for a single in/out and pay $10. Considering that a typical traveler might only go in and out twice in a day, guests pay an additional $2 over an outsider for no real gain. Guests are also a captive audience, as there is no real parking to be had in the surrounding neighborhood. There is a lovely restaurant on the fourth floor of the hotel and the surrounding area has numerous wonderful restaurants within a few blocks walk. The wifi was good and was stable through our four day stay. I could clearly read the writing on planes as the came in on approach to the airport, but we were never bothered by the noise. All in all an excellent hotel, but beware of the extra parking charge if you plan on driving. Read more

A call from the front desk quieted things down a bit, for a while...but with the young crowd this place attracts, I bet it's a frequent occurrence. i visit San Diego at least once a month and I can tell you that the lobby is impressive and the top level have a beautiful view, the problem are all the rooms there are too small and mostly all of them have a view to the parking lot. I reserved a two queen bed room and they gave me a one queen bed room were the bed could barely fit. My second day on San Diego I stayed in a different hotel was cheaper and way better accommodations, in the same area. My husband and I were completely disappointed with this hotel.
