Spain’s foothold in California began here with Mission San Diego de Alcalá, a tourist-friendly church built in 1769. Nearby, Old Town’s historic buildings feature trendy bars and restaurants. Other major attractions include SeaWorld, Qualcomm Stadium, and Mission Bay Park, the nation’s largest waterfront park. South in Point Loma, the Cabrillo National Monument offers panoramic views of San Diego.

This hotel is located in an area with many hotel options from Double Tree to Motel 6 right next door. The location is amazing though, central to everything in SD.This property is clean but is dated. I was hoping for more of a vacation/resort experience based on the pictures and room rate. That was not the case, I could have paid about half for the same […] quality of room in several other hotels in "Hotel Circle". The staff was friendly and it is a pet freindly hotel which is nice but if you don't want a room on the bottom floor it is an additional $45.00 a night if you have a pet. Also I still don't understand the $12.00 parking fee at this place. There is no parking deck just a huge lot that you would park in for free at many other hotels. The bed was also not very comfortable. I do not think I would return with all the other options so close by. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"very disappointing stay"
The room had lint and paper scraps all over the floor near chair in the corner. The balcony was full of ashes from prior guests in the room or from the balcony above upon arrival on Friday and was not cleaned on Saturday so could not use the balcony at all!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Disapointing to see decline"
We stayed at this hotel at least 3 times before. Pool was not useable as it was not heated. The jacuzzi was dirty - gross. There were people partying below our hotel room, I tried calling 4 times and the front desk was continually busy - so no help in getting some quiet. I think the people below us were smoking marijuana. Constant door slamming woke […] us up throughout the nights. Koi fish were gone - which is something our family really enjoyed in previous other visits. Mattress was not comfortable. Seems they are cutting back at this hotel. Sad to see the decline. Staff is excellent. Food is good. Room was clean . Terrible bad smell in lobby and restaurant! Needs rugs replaced. Needs to be painted. Pool well maintained. I saw vacuuming done and when I got up and walked past dirt was clearly visible. Would not go back due to dirty smell.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Got my money's worth"
Definitely got what I paid for - no 5 star hotel nor is it a roach motel either. First the GOOD: Service was great from check-in to check-out was great including the restaurant. Accomodatation was not so bad (see below). Buffet was awesome if you paid for it upfront. Now the bad: Climate control in the room needs to be serviced. It was hot while we […] were visiting and the room tempurature felt muggy at best regardless of the thermostat setting. Parking spaces were made for Fiats sized vehicles - totally small and ridiculous (thank god for rentals). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient location"
Guy at front desk said I was being "upgraded" to a pool view and a room with a microwave and refrigerator. In reality, balcony looked out over the 8 freeway and microwave and fridge were crammed into the wardrobe closet (very odd). Very pleasant staff on the grounds and in the bar. Beautiful grounds, although hotel itself seems a little outdated. Great […] location and free shuttle to Fashion Valley, which allowed for easy access to Qualcomm Stadium. Parking was $12 per night though. Would recommend based on convenient location. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

My room smelled weird. Like old carpet. Bedding could have been more comfortable too.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very convenient location. Good value for the money, but old property so the walls are a little thin and you can easily hear your neighbors. Like all other hotels in the area they charge for internet service and parking, but their rates are competitive or cheper than others.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beware of "overflow" rooms!"
Our first night was terrible! We were in an "overflow" room that was not even attached to the hotel. It was like being at a Motel except paying for a high dollar room. This was the first time we traveled with our 18 month old out of state and the first night was a disaster! The next afternoon we were finally moved to a nice room that was actually a […] part of the hotel. The room was a good size and clean. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Just OK"
The property is an older one as are most on Hotel Circle. The food and service in the restuarant was less than satisfactory. There were numerous problems with the TV reception to the point of having to move to another room. The hotel and maintenance staff were attentive and worked to come to a satisfactory resolution. Next trip I think I would find […] something closer the beaches and Sea World. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Disappointing"
The carpet of my room ( # 1107) along with the rooms near the Aloha entrance is so old, dark, and dirty. The bed frame against the walls have so many scratches. My 5-year-old boy played on the carpet barefoot for 10 minutes and his feet turned black. I was very disappointed as soon as I walked in to the room. The atmosphere of the room and dark and […] sticky feeling carpet reminded me of a 2 star motel, not a 3.5 star Crown Plaza. I have been staying with Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott for the past years and all rooms were bright and comfy. The room in this hotel is by far the most disappointing one. However, the tropical style of the decoration outside of the room looks pretty nice. It's just that the beauty of the design in the hall doesn't make me sleep better. "OK hotel, but feels like was better in the past"
Pictures of the hotel are much better than what you actually see when you get there. It's not as shiny, it has an old feel. Elevators look old. Old the painted surfaces have like 10-20 layers of paint. You just see that it's an old hotel that supposed to be grandiose and probably was in the past, but now shows its age. Internet is NOT free. There's […] shuttle every morning to Sea World at 9:30 and Zoo at 8:30. Rooms are fine, clean and everything. Furniture is fine as well, but a little hard to open and close, again, shows its age. Restaurant has a fine menu, a little overpriced, but probably OK for hotels. There's a big swimming pool - my family didn't use it, since we enjoyed the city and pretty much just slept in the hotel. For just sleeping it's perfectly fine (but overpriced). Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"OK Hotel for the Price"
Service was great and room was nice, but nothing special. There were loud people literally yelling outside the hallways in the middle of the night and nobody from the Hotel seemed to shut them up. The Hawaiian theme is cheesy looking and needs to go, it is just what you will get. for the price of the hotel. I would give it 3.5 Stars....Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good location poor service"
I feel like the hotel put me in the worst room they had because I purchased my hotel thru hotels.com. The room was ok, definately not luxury - more old style. But clean so served it's purpose for being last minute. Easy drive to downtown gas lamp clubs.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not bad, but the room is not worth the price"
The hotel has good location, close to Sea World, fashioin valley, and highway. But the furnitures and decoration are obviously old and not maintained well. In addition, the room is a little small. I can barely open my two 29" luggages in the room. With the same price, I can get a 3 star hotel room with 1.25X~1.5X larger room. Among 3 hotels I stay […] during my trip in Los Angeles and San Diego, this is the only hotel that doesn't provide free internet. This adds to the total cost to stay in this hotel. "Crowne Plaza Hanalei-Not what I expected"
We stayed at this hotel for two nights for a friend's birthday celebration in San Diego. Unfortunately, due to traffic, we were unable to arrive and check in until 11 PM. We were told that rooms were first come first serve, but if we had any problems with the room to contact the front desk. When we entered the room, there were immediate issues. This […] room was older, run down, and located in the "motel" part of the hotel separate from the towers. I have stayed in this hotel before and had been quite impressed with the accomodations. However, this separate building was not up to par. There were short, dark hairs littering the floor of the bathroom, which I assume were pubic hairs. In addition to that nasty surprise, I noticed that the shower head was extremely low on the wall- about 4 1/2 feet off the ground, necessitating ducking underneath it to shower. When one did shower, approximately 4 inches of water would accumulate in the bathtub. If those things were not enough, my boyfriend noticed that the chain lock had been installed improperly-backwards- so that anyone could reach in and push the chain right open. We called the front desk to ask about a room change. We were told that due to the two conventions that were taking place that weekend, there were no more rooms available in the main hotel. Disgusted and tired, we went to sleep with one of the chairs pushed up against the door. The next day, we were about to leave for a day on the town, when my boyfriend became concerned that we would be leaving our things in an unsecured room. He called the front desk who dispatched maintenance very quickly to our room. I commend them for their fast attention and effort to fix the lock on our door. We left for the day feeling a little more at ease. As I have stated, I have stayed at Crowne Plaza hotels in the past, including Crowne Plaza Hanalei. I must say I was extremely disappointed in the condition of the room in which we were placed during this stay. However, the ser Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Decent hotel for families if you get a good rate."
The hotel location is okay, but it is in a slightly shady area. The hotel itself has a neat motif. The lobby is very nice and the landscaping is good. The secured parking area is a plus. I saw a security guard patrolling late at night. The staff is very accommodating. The disappointment was in the room. It reminded me of a 2 star hotel. The room was […] clean, but the quality of the furniture, bathroom fixtures, and general decor was on the lower end. "Oversized rooms but a little outdated"
Check-in/reception area decor was nice. Rooms were accommodating and large (great for families) but were a little outdated. Rooms could use some remodeling. There was pet hair on our carpet (disgustingly stuck to our socks) and the bathroom tiles looked a bit rusty in some areas. We had other family members staying at the same hotel (same room type […] with 2 queen beds) but their room had a fridge, ours did not. So, we called the front desk and had to "request" it which was a little disappointing and inconvenient. But, kudos to customer service for bringing us a fridge within 15 minutes. Parking was $12, not too bad, but parking spaces are very small (hard for a SUV type vehicle). Overall, for a 3.5 star rated hotel...it's "nice" and great for families. But, if you're looking for a romantic/upscale hotel...I would not stay here. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Lights Out!"
The price was great, (special on Expedia). Apparently it is a "green hotel" which means that the lights and fan go out on you while in the shower. It is motion activated, and does not pick up on motion in the shower. The lights went out on me at least four times during one shower, which kind of seems dangerous. We were awakened one night around 2:00 […] a.m. by an extremely loud pre-football game party yelling out by the pool. Be aware, the proximaty to Qualcom Stadium lends this hotel to visiting fans and their partys. Doors were being slammed over and over. We called the front desk and asked them to do something, and after an hour of the yelling and slamming called again. It quieted down in another 15 minutes or so. We had also booked the room a few days later, the night before we flew out. This room had not been vaccuumed and the carpet was frayed about two inches out from the bathroom tile. The cabinet door next to the TV could not close completely since the door was warped and the light in the cabinet would not go out. Very disappointed in hotel. Crown Plaza has a great reputation, and this one did not live up to it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Crowne Plaza Hotel Row"
The hotel was older than I thought it would be, although the room was clean. I could hear the sounds from the room above. I think the price was a bit high for the area. My biggest complaint was the lack of free parking spaces and they were very small and crowded. There appeared to be an overflow dirt lot, but I did not think it was safe as there were […] a number of individuals on bikes riding back in to this dirt area surronded by trees and overgrowth. "Nice people, but. . ."
The staff at the Crowne Plaza Hanalei were absolutely lovely. . . friendly, willing to go out of their way to help, prompt and efficient. But this hotel is in desperate need of an upgrade. The room was less than clean, not through the fault of the housekeeper, but because you just can't get nicked, scratched, worn woodwork and tiling clean. They hit you with a 12.00$ parking fee if you dare show up in a car. Parking spaces are very small and lots of cars double parked. Not a big fan of the surprise fees. ...the hotel and the room smelled funny. Damp and moldy. San Diego isn't that damp in June but we just couldn't tolerate the smell of the room and the restaurant. Nice amenities (first time I've every encountered a pampering little bag with ear plugs, an eye mask and lavender water pillow spray!) The restaurant is just so-so.
