San Diego’s waterfront airport lies northwest of downtown, which is home to the San Diego Convention Center, PetCo Park stadium, and the Gaslamp Quarter’s. That historic neighborhood’s restaurants and bars are the hub of the city’s nightlife. Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo form a green swath in this urban jungle. Offshore, Coronado Island offers postcard views of the city skyline.

"Nice hotel"
Overall, my experience was favorable, however, there is no self-parking and valet parking was very expensive. There is also a extra charge (service fee) which is for use of the coffee maker in the room (terrible tasting coffee) and 2 bottles of water.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Watch out for the "EXPENSIVE" PARKING"
I had picked this hotel because the price was not too bad but with I paid for parking, I could have stayed somewhere closer to the convention center, $35/day for parking, I find it ridiculous!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"West Gfate Hotel downtown San Diego"
Pretty much was happy with everything about the hotel, except the linens and pillows. The sheets were pretty rough for the amount of money you spend on a high class hotel and the pillows were extremly soft and frumpy. It was a little difficult to sleep which if dissapointing because that's kind of why you get a hotel room to start with.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old World Charm"
The Westgate Hotel is a great example for old world charm. There were no prices on the room service meals and the bed linens are turned down for you for the night...every night. One thing I did not like, I was billed $15 each day + tax- beyond the room price, for the avialability of wifi service and four bottles of water in the refridgerator.. Unforunately […] for me, the heating system in my room malfunctioned. Service came quickly and the bellboy took my luggage and bags to the new room. The accomodations are way above the regular chains. It was a welcome stay. I would do it again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"The WestGate San Diego"
If you are staying in San Diego, this is a must. Superior service with a friendly attitude. The decor is elegant to say the least. Every staff member I encountered was friendly, knowledagable, and willing to help. The cuisine is the best around the down down. You will not regret your decision to stay here. My wife and I have traveled the world. This […] is on our list of a must return. Soon. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Large room beautiful view"
After shopping hotels.com for a hotel near the San Diego Convention center, I chose the Westgate for the price and overall rating. This hotel lives up to it's 4+ stars. Beautiful lobby, friendly helpful front desk staff, and very spacious rooms. This is an older hotel, but has been beautifully maintained and upgraded. Marble in bathrooms, plenty of […] drawer space, dimmer switches on the lights. The rooms come with a "cooler" and free bottled water, but you can also have an true refrigerator brought up for a one time moderate charge for your entire stay. They also charge a daily "resort fee", but this includes internet and use of their business center which I found to be very helpful (would have paid close to this much for internet at other hotels). The Westgate is about 7 blocks from the convention center, and about the same distance to the Amtrak station. Both are easy walks. On the downside, there is considerable noise from emergency vehicles. I also had minor issues with water pressure, and there were some rather large spots on the carpet that had been cleaned leaving discolored areas. The maid service was too much for me... they are in and out of the rooms numerous times each day, including 'turn down' service at night. Tip: Put your 'do not disturb' sign on the outer door into your room if you don't want the maids banging the door in the middle of the night when they deliver your newspaper. All told, the service, view and location outway the minor problems, and I would definitely stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"good location for downtown"
the hotel is on the older side and not as opulent as the US Grant next door, however rooms are clean and comfortable, close to all in downtown and convention center, parking is ridiculous, I parked two cars for three days @ $32.00 per day per car, friendly and helpful hotelstaffGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old World Charm w/New World Glitches..."
My husband and I stayed at The Westgate for three nights while I attended a two-day class at the hotel. I booked an early flight from Denver to San Diego with the intention of spending the day in LA. We arrived at the hotel around 9:30 am and requested an early check-in. The Front Desk was accommodating and checked us in right away (Rm #1188). The […] room is situated along 3rd Ave facing The U.S. Grant Hotel; an OK city view with one king bed. I don't find San Diego to have a spectacular city view, so a bay view room may be better. The room was quiet at night, not much street noise; basically because we were on a higher floor. The light beaming through the sides and bottom of the door to the room wasn't too distracting. It served as a night light of sorts to help navigate my way to the bathroom. Maid service was good, as it should be. The only thing that was a bit disconcerting is that the maid will knock, then immediately start to open the door. This happened during the day and again at night. Having the Afternoon Tea right in the middle of the main entrance lobby of the hotel didn't make sense. Heading to the Business Ctr from the elevator, you have to negotiate dining tables which prove distracting to the diners. You also have to move through the tables again to leave the Business Ctr and exit through the front door. Not a well thought-out plan for the flow of traffic for both dining guests and hotel guests. One visit was enough... we'll stay elsewhere. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Hotel"
The Westgate Hotel was great! Nice clean rooms with old school plumbing and decor. Large shower/tub with lots of water pressure and the service was impecable! Great location close to everything in the gas lamp district.Genuine Expedia guest review

"West Gate Hotel, San Diego--"
I now know how a five star hotel is supposed to feel. The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable. I asked for restaurant suggestions and received a detailed description including price and formality. The receptionist also had great suggestions for sights to see, etc. The location was very convenient. My meeting was at the NBC Building on Broadway. […] The hotel was half a block away. The room was well set out. It was bright and clean. In addition to the usual items, there was an overstuffed chair and ottoman, a large, leather appointed work table, and the latest in clock/ipod ports as well as in room web connections. The restaurant in the hotel was excellent, and it was opened sufficiently early to allow me to enjoy breakfast before walking to my morning meeting. Lastly, they didn't charge for everything. The business center, gym, etc. were included in a small fee. There were other free items like fresh fruit and bottled water. I would definitely stay there again if I were in San Diego. "Good place to stay for a Cubs game"
Hotel is within walking distance from Wrigley field (about 15 minutes). We were there on business and decided to catch a game that evening so we picked a hotel within walking distance. The room was nice and the staff was very friendly and professional. Rail station is about 50 yards away if you don't feel like walking or taking a cab. Hotel is located […] downtown, I wouldn't recommend it for a family. The area isn't bad and I felt safe but I am not sure how comfortable I would feel walking around with young children at night. "Too many extra charges"
Very nice furnishing but lacked an in room refrigerator, no ice machines (had to order ice from room service) and a $27 per day valet garage parking fee. No self parking. Also they added on a resort fee whether you asked for it or not.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great deal at the reduced Expedia rate!"
I'd already ruled out the Westgate as too expensive for my stay in SD, but after going through the flight booking process, Expedia offered me a rate that was pretty much one third of the published rate! Bargain!Genuine Expedia guest review

"Will stay whenever I need to go to convention center."
Great hotel with open lobby and large rooms. Good location and very helpful staff. A little on the expensive side but well worth it. Street noise can be a little loud on the east side in the mornings.Genuine Expedia guest review
"We'll be back."
This hotel is a pleasant walk through the Gaslamp District from the San Diego Convention Center, yet it's nicely removed from the convention itself. There are lots of good restaurants in the area. The one in the hotel is also nice. There is good live entertainment in the lounge off the lobby. We found the staff friendly, helpful, and well-trained. This […] is a first class hotel. "Good hotel with Expedia Price"
Stayed at the Westgate as i was attending a conference at the San Diego Convention Center, which was about 8 blocks away. The walk was easy to do as the weather was great (mid 70s). This hotel is one of those old-fashioned quaint hotels with character, and though European in style, had comfortable sized rooms, free internet, free gym, free bottled water, […] daily newspaper. I received a great price through Expedia, and hence definitely enjoyed the stay. Adjacent neighborhood is OK, and a couple of blocks from the Gas Lamp quarter (across the street from the US Grant hotel). Overall a pleasant experience. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Very impressed!"
Absolutely loved the hotel - Location, Service, Room! Some of the perks included evening turn down service with chocolates and bottled water, over 100 restaurants in walking distance, 1 mile walk to the beach. Biggest suprise were the soap bars - they actually moisturized rather than dry out my skin! On the flip side, they only have valet parking and […] I thought it to be expensive. "Charming piece of the old-world in heart of San Diego"
Wonderful gem of a hotel with old-world charm and class. Lobby is ornate (based on Versailles) but service and staff are modern and friendly (not detached or stuffy). Rooms were spacious with views over the city (and small balconies). Nice showers, twice-a-day housekeeping with turn-down service and free Wi-Fi. Not much more to ask for in a hotel. Located […] close to 5th Ave with plenty of restaurants and right beside Horton Plaza shopping center with great stores. A short walk to water 10-minutes to convention center. "Aging elegance"
This hotel has the type of traditional elegance which reminds you of the Biltmore in LA or the Plaza in NY. However, although it puts on a good show, I believe it has gotten a bit rough around the edges. The TV in our room emitted a constant whining sound -- clearly it needs to be replaced. Also, its remote control did not work consistently. Therefore, […] I gave up on watching TV. When I went downstairs to the lobby at 7am for coffee (because the rooms do not have coffee makers, but that is a different story), the cofffee urn was empty. Though the food was delicious, the service in the restaurant was also inconsistent. After finishing my appetizer, my empty plates remained on the table for over twenty minutes, during which time I never saw an employee of any kind. For the price, this hotel should be better and thus I would not recommend it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
