Westgate Hotel

As San Diego residents we checked-in for a little weekend getaway. A great location for shopping and dining in the Gaslamp area of San Diego. Upon arrival the valet service was very prompt and friendly. The front desk experience was likewise quick, friendly and professional. We were given a room on the 17th floor. Unfortunately our room overlooked 'C' […] Street where the trolley runs. In fact there was a trolly stop just below our window. The Westgate has done nothing to help with soundproofing and we heard the trolley into the wee hours. Likewise, we could even hear the homeless people down on the street mulling around. The layout (at least in our area of the hotel) has an anti-room that you enter before entering your actual guest room. Our anti-room is shared with one other guest room. We heard people in and out of the anti-room as well as the hallway well past midnight. One of the fixtures in the bathroom was loose. Not a big deal, but something I don't expect in a hotel of this caliber. Room service food was good and unusually fast to be delivered All in all I'd say the hotel was just slightly above average. Close to the water, a fun outdoor mall, good restaurants and bars. Really nice service. Parking in the structure is expensive but what can you do. 10 minute walk gets you to most places you'd want to be. Hotel is really classy with a vintage feel. Spacious rooms and big ole showers.

Read all of the reviews and it didn't really register about the $15 hotel "fee". This supposedly good hotel actually charges you a mandatory fee for the dinky coffee pot in the bathroom, a newspaper and turning down your bed. Every once in a while there is some kind of fee that actually borders on offensive and this one does. If the hotel is in desperate […] need of the $15 per room then they should just raise the rates. The desk clerk actually looked embarrassed when she told us about it and we seriously questioned her. I wouldn't stay here again. Pick another hotel closer to the waterfront. The Westgate is a really nice hotel with an old fashioned flair. We saw them serving tea to a few people when we checked in, however they did not offer us any! There was a $15.00 facility use fee they told us for the pool etc. however, the pool is under renovations and cannot be used. There is valet parking only at $32.00, however when we went to dinner, […] upon our return we waiting in our car for 15 minutes for the valet. We had to go inside to find him and he was talking to the young clerk at the counter. No apology was given. I stayed one night at the Westgate. I liked the decoration of the hotel lobby and in the room. Very classy like The bed was very comfy. There are 15$ convenient fee per night which I really disagreed on that. Because there are no free breakfast, no free parking lot, and they offered you only a free daily newspaper (on demand). I parked my car at public parking on Ash and 1st street. It was only 16$ for 24 hour. I only stayed at this hotel because of the Expedia mysterious deal. Surprise #1: Beautiful hotel, original luxury decor from the mid 1900s. Room wall, and floors have recently been refurbished so it feels new. Clean. The hotel is a bit dated (they still use old school duvets), but wonderful staff and GREAT location. It sucks that the valet is $30 and you have to pay a resort fee for the 'free' internet and bottles of water, but really no major complaints otherwise.

This is a lovely hotel. The location is close to shopping and Gas Lamp district. Lots of nearby cafes and restaurants. The hotel staff was very friendly, housekeeping impeccable. Only problems we encountered were the noise (fire station just a few blocks away) and the "resort" fee. Also parking at the hotel garage is pricey. We did not use the garage […] as the location is so great you don't really need a car. The Maritime Museum is just a short and inexpensive cab ride away. Would stay here again. Read more

Overall, my experience was favorable, however, there is no self-parking and valet parking was very expensive. There is also a extra charge (service fee) which is for use of the coffee maker in the room (terrible tasting coffee) and 2 bottles of water.

Older hotel in Gas Lamp district, walking distance from pretty much everything downtown. Great location if you are looking to be right in the sector and for the price it was a great deal. Be aware that you get charged a $14 per day "resort" fee as well as a $32 per day parking fee, if you choose to park there. We enjoyed the stay in the hotel – its location, decor and ambience were all very impressive, but there was a few hidden fees that could and should be mentioned up front. A seemingly compulsory 'usage' fee for wi-fi, in-room bottled water and other sundries was a little pointless, surely it'd make sense to bundle them with the room and give the customer […] the correct price upfront? Hotel was beautiful, staff was attentive, very nice place. Only drawbacks were they do not have a pool or jacuzzi, and the parking. Daily rate was $32 dollars and the surrounding area has ALOT of homeless.

It's not the same cookie-cutter hotel experience you get from a lot of other hotels. The lobby is beautiful and when got to our room we were originally discouraged because it was right next to the elevator, but there was an outer door to our room before actually entering our room which cut down on noise in the hallway. Excellent decor, service, views, and cleanliness. No noise issues were noted. The room was a bit on the small side compared to more newly constructed hotels but still more than sufficient for three adults in a standard double room. The hotel is located in the hornthern portion downtown San Diego in a cluster of similar hotels. It is about a 20-25 minute […] walk to the convention center, along streets that have plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. The walk is entirely safe at any reasonable hour. Our room, on the 16th floor, enjoyed sweeping views of downtown San Diego, with glimpses of the waterfront and Coronado Island. The exterior wall was a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall sliding glass door dressed in four layers of custom window treatments, opening onto a balcony. Our room was quite large, our bathroom marble, and our housekeeper exceptional. […] The hotel lobby is opulent, dripping in crystal chandeliers, fresh flowers, parquet floors, antique rugs, with some furniture dating back to Louis XVI. The business center, with it's fabric covered walls and gilded furniture, is luxurious enough to use for a wedding. A small, elegant salon off the lobby offers live music almost nightly and the hotel restaurant is equally lovely. It's obvious the friendly staff takes pride in its hotel and its level of customer service. The only downside is a faint veneer of age caused by once gorgeous parquet and marble floors in desperate need of polishing. The guest rooms, although lovely, also feel a little spartan without any art adorning the walls. Nevertheless, this hotel is a jewel in the Gaslamp Quarter - beautiful, reasonably priced and walking distance to countess restaurants, theatres and stores. It's a great value in a great location. Nice hotel, nice people.. but could use some updating. The biggest dissapointment we had was that the shower had NO HOT WATER throughout our stay!!! I would like to think this was a rare exception, but when I called down to notify we had no hot water they acted as if this was a normal situation. Pretty much was happy with everything about the hotel, except the linens and pillows. The sheets were pretty rough for the amount of money you spend on a high class hotel and the pillows were extremly soft and frumpy. It was a little difficult to sleep which if dissapointing because that's kind of why you get a hotel room to start with.

After shopping hotels.com for a hotel near the San Diego Convention center, I chose the Westgate for the price and overall rating. This hotel lives up to it's 4+ stars. Beautiful lobby, friendly helpful front desk staff, and very spacious rooms. This is an older hotel, but has been beautifully maintained and upgraded. Marble in bathrooms, plenty of […] drawer space, dimmer switches on the lights. The rooms come with a "cooler" and free bottled water, but you can also have an true refrigerator brought up for a one time moderate charge for your entire stay. They also charge a daily "resort fee", but this includes internet and use of their business center which I found to be very helpful (would have paid close to this much for internet at other hotels). The Westgate is about 7 blocks from the convention center, and about the same distance to the Amtrak station. Both are easy walks. On the downside, there is considerable noise from emergency vehicles. I also had minor issues with water pressure, and there were some rather large spots on the carpet that had been cleaned leaving discolored areas. The maid service was too much for me... they are in and out of the rooms numerous times each day, including 'turn down' service at night. Tip: Put your 'do not disturb' sign on the outer door into your room if you don't want the maids banging the door in the middle of the night when they deliver your newspaper. All told, the service, view and location outway the minor problems, and I would definitely stay here again. Read more

Hotel is extremely nice and very quiet and clean. It is right across the street from the Mayors office, close to the courthouse, and next to two bail bond places. Be advised that there is a fifteen dollar a day 'resort fee' and thirty two dollar a day parking fee.
