Location.
Set on 14 waterfront acres, this San Diego hotel is on Shelter Island, framed by America's Cup Harbor and San Diego Bay. A yacht-filled marina is adjacent. SeaWorld and San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter are both within 6 miles.
Hotel Features.
Flower-lined walkways, waterfalls, a koi pond, and two colorful resident parrots make the hotel feel like a romantic tropical hideaway. An outdoor pool is surrounded by lounge chairs and palm trees. Bicycle rentals are available for touring Shelter Island (first two hours complimentary).
With ocean views, Humphreys Restaurant – the hotel's fine-dining restaurant – offers contemporary, international cuisine and a wide-ranging wine list. With a rotating menu for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, the restaurant also offers a children’s menu. Breakfast is served daily from 6:30 AM to 11 AM. Live entertainment is presented in the lounge nightly. May through October, Humphreys Half Moon Inn hosts a renowned concert series at its outdoor theater.
Guestrooms.
Mediterranean-inspired guestrooms and suites are distributed among 19 low-rise buildings (no elevators). All accommodations offer TV with premium channels and video games (fees apply), wireless Internet access, refrigerators, coffee/tea maker, and in-room safes. Suites are larger than guestrooms and have private furnished patios or balconies.

During warm weather, crowds pack the waters off Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, two of the most popular stretches of San Diego sand. These laidback locales are known to host the occasional farmer’s market or arts festival. Mission Boulevard connects both beaches and leads north to La Jolla.

"Tropical getaway"
Having a parking lot that was easy to get to our car was a plus, versus the traditional hotel with valet parking. The grounds were well maintained with new plantings. My two complaints were the neighbors above were noisy early in the morning, but that's not the hotels fault, and the smoke alarm was beeping at 2:00am due to low battery. "Close to all the sights"
While the hotel and grounds were charming, the rooms are very small. The mattresses need to be updated since both beds in the room felt like you were sleeping on the floor. If you are 5'9" or taller, the shower is a complete joke. I'm 5'10" and the showerhead came up to my shoulder. Doing back-bends to try and wash my hair was a nightmare. We booked Humphrey's the "day of" when our other lodging plans fell through. The hotel was great! The staff were all incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about delish local eats. "Charming and clean"
We loved our stay, we have 2 young kids and they enjoyed the grounds too. The views of Mission Bay are really great, lots of yachts and the view of the SD downtown skyline were nice backdrops. I stayed at Humphrey's Half Moon Inn for five nights in Jan. 2013 with my sixteen-year-old daughter. We loved everything about the place and would definitely stay again! The location is perfect - in between downtown and the beaches and Shelter Island truly is like a tropical getaway. The grounds are very nice, the restaurant is awesome (fantastic Sunday […] brunch), the staff is beyond helpful and friendly, the pool area is relaxing, and the room was lovely. We asked to change rooms upon check-in simply due to seeing a room with a nice location, and they gladly obliged. I only ranked comfort down a point because the bed was a bit hard... however, the one in our original room seemed much more comfy so perhaps they are in the process of replacing beds and we moved to a room with an older one. "Nice Hotel on Shelter Island"
We have stayed at this hotel a few years ago, so we had a pretty good idea what it was like. The king room was on the small side but nice and appeared to be recently remodeled. There was a small refridgerator, microwave and coffee maker in the room. I have only two complaints: 1) I don't remember a charge for parking in the past, so I was a little shocked […] that we were charged. 2) The pool and hot tub were closed for remodeling and we did not know this at the time of booking. Since this trip was a vacation, this feature was very important to us and had I known of this closure, we would have booked elsewhere. The hotel did have an arrangement with a nearby hotel to use their poo/hot tub and provided shuttle service, but this was too inconvienient and we did not take advantage of it. All-in-all, its a nice place to stay near dowtown attractions, but also away from busy streets and congestion. But recommend calling the hotel to make sure of what you are getting before booking! My family and I stayed at Humphreys for 3 days, and I can tell you right now that I'd go back in a second!! The location is absolutely wonderful. It's a short ride to just about all the attractions in and around San Diego. The Hotel was clean and well kept. The staff was extremely friendly. When driving into the complex you're thinking you're about to drive into paradise. The sourroundings are very pretty, however, then you open the door to your room and you're hit with this musty aroma that is disgusting!! The walls and heating system had mold on them and the carpet was actually damp when you walked on it with barefeet!! We traveled with our 2 year old, and our first room was overlooking the pool. The pool didn't close, people were swimming & drinking until late, and the band next door was loudly audible.
