Spain’s foothold in California began here with Mission San Diego de Alcalá, a tourist-friendly church built in 1769. Nearby, Old Town’s historic buildings feature trendy bars and restaurants. Other major attractions include SeaWorld, Qualcomm Stadium, and Mission Bay Park, the nation’s largest waterfront park. South in Point Loma, the Cabrillo National Monument offers panoramic views of San Diego.

Water drainage was an issue in the bathtub. My spouse had to remove the plug so that the water would drain. Hair dryer did not work, had to request a replacement. Room was not cleaned during the first night's stay, maid service stated that according to system, room was vacant. Laslty, parking area was less than ideal. "Noisy"
Paper thin walls, needs work - doors (room door and bathroom door) didn't close or open properly). Poor ventilation and no natural light in main room of family suits. Loved having bunk beds for the kids, but the housekeepers took blankets off both bunks every day - it's darn hard to make bunk beds when you can't get up there! (100 lb weight limit). […] Don't know why they put thd desk in the kids' area. Toilet randomly ran in the middle of the night. The parking garage is tight and kind of far from the hotel, and costs $16/night although they gave us a discount because we stayed 5 nights. There was a big group of teenagers staying on our floor (including Unchaperoned kids in thd room next door) and there was a lot of hallway noise. One night I had to ask a group sitting in the hall charting outside my door to quiet down after 11. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Hotel not as nice as pictures look online"
Pictures online are deceiving. Great location for being close to the zoo, seaworld, and airport. The hotel was newly updated but smelt dirty and the bathrooms didn't feel clean. Front desk staff was great!Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by DoubleTree by Hilton San Diego - Hotel Circle We apologize that we failed to exceed your expectations. Please know that all of our online photos were taken of our accommodations and property. Thank you for bringing the odor in your room and the cleanliness of your bathroom to our attention. Please know that we truly appreciate the opportunity to assist in any way we can during your stay. It would have been our pleasure to eliminate any odor that was present in your room and ensure that your bathroom was spotless. We are glad that you enjoyed our great customer service. It is our hope that you will decide to stay with us again on your next trip to San Diego.
Wow, where do I start. First we were given the wrong room. My reservation was for a 'deluxe king' and we ended up with two double beds. After switching our room to the correct one, the first thing we smell is mildew! Our reservation was for 3 nights and the last thing I wanted was to smell mildew the entire time. We ended up switching rooms for a 3rd […] time and this time they gave us a handicap room, which is fine, but now we have a room with no tub and no view. After switching rooms for a 4th time, they finally got it right! We end up with a nice room and a nice view. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice rooms, but gouged for additional services."
The rooms are nice. Biggest complaints: parking ($16 per day, and no real options to NOT pay the fee and park elsewhere) and no continental breakfast. Location was nice. When I booked the hotel it did NOT say that there was extra you had to pay for parking. "Not thrilled with this place"
The hotel itself was nice BUT, if you need anything from housekeeping or room service you may as well forget it! We were there 4 nights and called for room service twice. They NEVER answered the phone, so I called the front desk and they told me they would give them a message to call me. They never did. So we decided to go eat at the Paninni grill in […] the hotel where I had to go find a waiter! And had some terrible and very expensive food. "Okay for the price"
The rooms had a "smell" to them. In one room we had a refrigerator that smelled strongly of leftover chinese food, the other one smelled like matches. The refrigerator was swapped out and that issue was solved. Also, balcony was not really much of a balcony. It was a tiny space that was similar to standing on a ledge. "Great location"
This hotel is really very nice, clean, and comfortable. The best thing about our stay was the convenience of the location. The downside was that the internet connection is HORRIBLE and we were unable to connect to the WiFi. We were on the sixth floor, and the signal was so weak. Even in the lobby the signal was not that great. This was difficult for […] us because my husband needed to be able to get some work done in the evenings but ended up having to find a Starbucks to connect to the internet. One of the reasons we chose the hotel was because of the free WiFi. Also, the pool area can get a bit loud, and travelling with a toddler, we needed to go to sleep earlier than most and the pool area was a bit rowdy and the music was loud. We could also hear people talking in the room next to us, so walls are pretty thin. Not sure if we would stay here again, despite the niceness of the hotel, WiFi is pretty important, as well as getting a good night's sleep. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The pictures on-line looked much better than the real thing, but the hotel was fine in it's over all quality. Nothing spectacular, but safe and clean. I was disappointed in the on-site restaurant because it was not kid-friendly at all. They served my 6 year old a glass of apple juice in a large wine-flute type glass. "This hotel is maybe 2 stars, not 3; needs updating"
We checked in at 4pm on a wednesday. The experience was very quick! We took the elevator up to our room and entered the room only to find two double beds, not the one king we had requested. I called the front desk to ask why we didn't get a king bed room. They said they didn't have any available but would call us and move our belongings when one became […] availbale. Upon further examination of the room, we found that the small leather loveseat had seen way better days. The leather was ripped on the seat and worn the the padding beneath on the arm rests. We didn't even want to sit on it because it looked so worn and dirty. We went down to the restaurant for dinner to find excellent service with so-so, overpriced, semi-restaurant made food. The next day, we visited the restaurant again for breakfast which was very good. They offer a buffet with a multitude of offerings or you can order off a menu. We were out the whole day returning in the late eveing only to find we were in the same room. None of the lights or the tv would turn on, very annoying. Once again, we called the front desk and they sent up a technician quickly. He found that the circuit breaker in the room was off and resolved the problem quickly. We then found that our small refrigerator was off the whole time the power was off and the food we had in there had spoiled. They made no offer for replacement or compenstion. "Somewhat Disappointed...."
We stayed in a family suite which was nice and spacious but unfortunately most of their family suites share the same wall as the elevator so during our entire stay all we kept hearing is the elevator going up and down which sounded like a load humming/vibrating noise. We told the front desk that they should tell management and all they said was "they […] know" If your choosing a family suite make sure to request one that is NOT next to the elevator. We tried to switch rooms and non were available. The worst part is the front desk clerk tried to offer us another suite and we asked to see it first, he gave us a key to a room where the guest were still in it!! Unbelievable!!! I was so embarrassed/outraged to have walked in on the guest that were in the room! There was no apology for his mistake either. He just said the computer must be wrong?!?! The hotel restaurant food was somewhat subpar but the service was dreadful. It was a "seat-yourself" restaurant BUT It took at least 10min before anyone came to us and they assumed we were ready to order although no menu was given and no water/drink was offered either. The hotel was very clean and modern and the cleaning staff was very nice and professional. Some of the people at the front desk need a customer service training refresher or possibly even another course in how to work their front desk computer system. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Heater in room did not work. Male staffer at front desk was very disrespectful to females in front of me seeking to get a room for the night. Resulting in their leaving and not staying for the night. "eh, it was alright"
You can hear the sliding doors from every room around you, so if your neighbor comes in at midnight and goes out on their deck, you will be awake with them. $16 per night for parking? Not sure if other hotels charge but it was a little rough on the pocketbook. Continental breakfast for $12 an adult and $8 per child. No microwaves in the "suites" so […] you have a shoebox fridge, a coffee maker, and tap water. Oh, they give you a cookie when you arrive...wow. And to top our mediocre stay off, our maid service person decided to stick it to us because they were not happy with their tip. Little things like missing towels, glasses, needed to make our own bed. Would not suggest to another person, thinking the comfort suites is a better deal with the "service" we got here. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Hot water didn't exist"
Overall we were happy with the hotel. the area isn't the prettiest, but it's passable and cheaper than staying closer to the city. It is about a 5 minute drive to downtown. My biggest issue was the lack of hot water. We had no hot water any of the days that we were there, at least not in the morning. i called daily about this and they just kept saying […] they'd turn up the hot water heater. When I complained at check out they were very nice, and apologized, but I had to get mean to get anything out of it, and even then they only gave me two free days parking...woo hoo a whoping $32. I would suggest spending the extra money and stay somewhere in town. The expedia deals for the nice hotels will make it worth it. Wish I had done that originally. "Traveling with little ones"
We just stayed in a family suite with our three little ones. The room was nice...I would have loved it if there were places to put things that were out of reach of the little ones! Room service was prompt. Our bellman was friendly and helpful. The cons: -parking was a little inconvenient with no direct access to the hotel from the parking garage (although […] parking was less per day than is stated on their website) -the rooms are not sufficiently insulated, so I could hear someone's tv and the kids in the hall a little too loudly. I shouldn't really complain since I have three little kids, so I hope they didn't disturb anyone! -there is not much close by in the way of grocery stores or restaurants. The chain restaurants are on the other side of the freeway from the hotel, over by the mall, which is not bad, but it would be nice to have someplace closer. Old Town San Diego is very close and there are grocery stores and restaurants near there. -I didn't feel like this hotel catered to families. We have stayed in a family suite at the Comfort Inn across the freeway and that seemed much more tailored to a family trip. Overall, it is a nice hotel and if I could get a good price, I would probably stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Potential."
My family spent our family vacation in San Diego and stayed at the Doubletree Club San Diego for four nights. We are very easy going and had a great time. While many of the amenities were great, there were a few things that left us a little disappointed. The hotel itself is very nice, but could be great. The hotel staff was very gracious and accommodating, […] with the exception of one rude front desk person that worked overnight. The breakfast buffet, which was included with our stay, was awesome. It is worth staying at this hotel simply for the breakfast buffet. The pool area is nice, but there is only one fireside seating area, which was always occupied by other guests. I recommend a few more areas like this by the pool, so more guests can take advantage of it. The parking is $16 a night, which I guess is pretty average in this area, but be aware that his adds up quickly. And if you do not park a car there overnight, be sure to let the front desk know, because they will automatically charge you. We only parked one night at the hotel, but were charged for all four nights, so be careful. The area is relatively nice, but it is located on Hotel Circle, which is exactly that. All hotels. So there are few restaurants or things to do within walking distance. The rooms were okay, but the bathroom was a little dirty and run down. Also, there was no hot water for the first two nights, but the hotel staff immediately fixed it when brought to their attention. All in all, a good hotel, but not up to par with the other Doubletree Hotels that I have stayed at in other cities. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

If hot water is a priority in your stay, this isn't your hotel. Clearly this hotel has chosen cost savings over customer comfort. Pretty much what I had expected from a double tree. We weren't in the room much because we have 100,000's of friends in San Diego because we're really cool. I had to do a little bit of work before setting out on the town that involved […] email. "Refurbished Hotel. . .low end for a Doubletree"
We stayed here for our anniversary because it was centerally located from where we wanted to be in San Diego. The hotel parking garage was a joke. It was so tight in there that our sports car barely fit and lord knows how a truck or van fits. When we checked in, the hotel lobby was nice and upgraded but when you get in the room, you can tell it is […] a renovated old hotel. Our bathroom door was broken and there were paint marks on the floor where you could tell it was not tarped before painting. Furnishing were decent but our heater did not work. "Good value for families"
While the hotel was not the cleanest and the overall quality was lacking in some areas, I would still go back with my family due to the convenience and comfort of the family suite. This was a fantastic room for our family - our two kids got a separate bedroom with a door, bunkbeds, their own TV and table - they were thrilled and it gave us the space […] and privacy that is often hard to find. The maid service was at times lacking (for example, sheets would be left for the bunkbeds, but not put on the beds, or not enough towels would be left), and the food at the restaurant is not recommended, but both of these factors can be overlooked. The pool area is fantastic, and I would definitely stay again. If you're not looking for a family room, and highly value quality, up-to-date quality, and a good on-site restaurant - I would not recommend it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nice hotel on Hotel Circle"
The look and decor of this hotel was beautiful. Just what I expected from the photos. However the bed was so uncomfortable, that it ruined our enjoyment of the weekend. Woke up with a back ache after tossing and turning both nights. The walls were a bit thin, but surprisingly it wasn't the problem I expected. I was also disappointed at the black out […] curtains being so thin that I was awakened by the morning sun (on a cloudy day!)
