San Diego’s waterfront airport lies northwest of downtown, which is home to the San Diego Convention Center, PetCo Park stadium, and the Gaslamp Quarter’s. That historic neighborhood’s restaurants and bars are the hub of the city’s nightlife. Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo form a green swath in this urban jungle. Offshore, Coronado Island offers postcard views of the city skyline.

Extremely high cost to valet park at downtown location while staying at the hotel. And the so-called 'continental breakfast' was pathetic.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location but....."
Loved the hotel! The room was clean and comfy and the hotel staff was very friendly. The location is fantastic with tons of restaurants and Horton Plaza just down the street. The only downside is the neighborhood is incredibly loud and it lasts pretty much all night long. Our room was on the 8th floor facing 5th St. and it sounded like we were at street […] level. Not a deal breaker but definitely something to keep in mind. Also, not that it had anything to do with the hotel, but someone was smoking weed in one of the rooms down the hall and the whole floor stunk. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Hotel for the Gaslamp area"
Overall, the hotel was nice and in a great location. The free breakfast was not very good and internet service is an additional $12.00/day.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Gaslamp Plaza Suites Pro's and Con's"
I was initially very impressed with this vintage hotel. My husband and I were on a weekend getaway to San Diego and the location was great for us. The hotel itself is old and has a ton of character. The architecture and decor is awesome. This was a compromise though... to be within easy walking distance of restaurants and bars, we also had to put up […] with the street noise. The window in our bedroom wouldn't shut properly so my light-sleeper husband had trouble staying asleep until about 2:00 or 3:00 am. The cool vintage feel does little for practical needs like noise abatement. I was also a little disappointed with our bathroom. I could totally understand and love the old fixtures and subway tile if it was actually cared for. There was hair in the tub and some small strips of the grout lines had begun to turn pink from mold or bacteria. The bed and linens were comfortable and the suite was a nice size. One more thing about the hotel that had originally sold me on it was the complimentary continental breakfast on the roof of the building. The views and location were really neat, but the meal was lacking. It was basically toast, pastries, apples, cereal, and beverages. I guess I've come to expect more from continental breakfast - at least some protein. In conclusion, our stay had pros and cons. All in all I would probably search for a new hotel next time. "Engagement Getaway"
We stayed at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites during my getaway and visit to San Diego. We stayed in studio suite 710 which we reserved online for $99/night which got us a studio suite with a queen bed and a window box seating area. No sofa like the suites posted in photos. We were very happy with our stay and got engaged that night in Little Italy! There is […] valet parking for $30/night and the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful since we didn't know the area. The hotel is literally steps from all the bars in the Gaslamp district and provided for a fun bar crawl following our engagement! I would recommend this hotel to others looking to visit the area for a night. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Parking and Staff"
Parking is too expensive $30 a day for valet. The staff was great . The Gaslamp Plaza Suites a boutique hotel with a fantasizing history. Mary at the front desk was friendly and helpful besides sharing the history of the building with us. It is actually a diamond in the rough. Only downside is the parkingGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not bad for a night or two"
The room was spacious and clean. I didn't like the fact that there was a $12-$13 surcharge per day of internet service or a $30/night valet parking fee. I parked on the street. Great proximity to a bunch of restaurants/bars/shops. Staff was friendly and helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Single Traveler"
My second stay at this hotel which is fairly centrally located in the Gaslamp quarter. There are many restaurants nearby, as well as the Horton plaza (2 blocks). It also close to the MTS Trolley (which goes to the bus line that goes through Balboa Park). The Hotel is an older building that is under going some renovations, but has kept the old style […] charm. The room was comfortable, and included a microwave, mini fridge, sink, and tableware for 4. The remainder of the room was typical (usual few outlets). The bed was comfortable, and there was a large flat screen TV. Since there only a few rooms on each floor, it was very quiet. As a single traveler and wanting to keep expenses low, I used the mini kitchen for evening meals (microwavable), packing sandwiches for lunch, and using the included continental breakfast to start the day. It was perfect for my trip. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Loud, but good location and neat building."
Lot's of noise from the goings-on in the Gaslamp district, but great location and very unique building. If noise bothers you, you might want to look elsewhere though. I would certainly stay here again if I wanted to be adjacent to the Gaslamp district.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Return visit"
Second visit to the hotel, five nights this time, seven previous time. Although the lobby is nothing to speak of and the elevators are "charming", the rooms have been very nice and comfortable for an extended stay. Staff has been very helpful both visits. The location in the middle of Gaslamp can make for somewhat noisy weekend nights on lower floors, […] but I will return next time I am in San Diego. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

I stayed here four years ago and I was happy to find a hotel that had changed very little to my eye. Friendly staff, clean & comfortable suites and within walking distance of the entire Gaslamp area. "Great hotel stay!!!!"
We had a great time! We were in SD for a convention and was able to walk back and forth easily and safely. The staff was wonderful and catered to our every need. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Gaslamp Plaza Suites! The staff were all very helpful and accommodating. Our room was clean and spacious. "More than adequate"
Overall, I was quite satisfied with the location and the service. Sean, the front desk manager, was extremely helpful and accommodating. The breakfast is served on the rooftop - the quite impressive view added a nice touch. The location worked for me - right on the 5th avenue, next door to Horton Plaza, and close enough to other downtown attractions. […] On the negative side: the building is quite old and it shows, sometimes in a not-so-charming way. Also, the breakfast selection could be a little bit better. There were pastries but no bagels or juice, and on one of the days I was told "No, we don't serve cream cheese today, only on Wednesdays and Fridays". Seriously??? "gaslamp plaza suites"
Loved where the hotel was, right in the middle of downtown and had a walk way right to the melting pot and the underground lounge. The room was a little smaller than i had hoped for and the window side was in between buildings (which was kinda scary , kept hearing someone on the fire stairs but overall very clean and comfy. "Charming, and close to the action (and noise)"
The Plaza Suites hotel either oozes old-World charm or is terribly outdated, depending on your taste. I rather liked it, especially the splendid elevators, all polished wood and mirrors. The tiled shower looked grim at first but was perfectly clean and functioned well. I was shocked at the valet parking charge, but later learned it was actually quite […] low for that area. It is a noisy neighborhood. The Plaza is on the edge of the Gaslamp district, so is not quite as noisy as those nearer the center. Still, you might ask for a room as high up as possible and at the back. Otherwise, the location is very good. I walked to Balboa Park from there, and in the evening went bar-hopping around the Gaslamp. If those are things you want to do, this hotel will suit. The complimentary breakfast (with great views from the rooftop) was very welcome. It’s a continental breakfast -- coffee, toast, marmalade, etc. Get there early. I found the staff friendly, although a little slow. So if you want a hotel that is out of the ordinary, well located, and are willing to brave the noise of the Gaslamp district, give this a try. "Right in the Heart of the Gaslamp"
This is an old historic hotel which has been very nicely renovated. We were near the top floor and had great views of San Diego. "Gaslamp Plaza Suites are a gas!"
I had a wonderful experience at the Gaslight. The staff, especially the front desk, were very courteous and very genuine in their willingness to help. I loved the old character of the hotel - the marble and wood, and how unpretentious it felt. It was the perfect place to enjoy the amazing 5th Street night life. Being on the 10th Floor (Penthouse Suite) […] helped since there was lots of street noise. True, the furniture was a little dated, but I think it just added to its charm. Everything worked and was comfortable - and they supplied a corkscrew - unreal!! It helped me feel like I was more on a vacation than attending a meeting. I enjoyed the rooftop terrace - although some 'real' breakfast items would have been nice, i.e. maybe a cheese plate, eggs - even hard-boiled. Good coffee and vistas. Only thing lacking was a pool - but the large Jacuzzi-style tub was amazing. And I loved the Video Center - older movies I hadn't seen but always enjoy. If I am visiting the area again, I am definitely staying at the Gaslamp. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Fun Historic Hotel, bring earplugs though"
Convenient location in Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego, and intriguing historic hotel. Staff were polite and helpful. Melting Pot restaurant next door was also enjoyable. Guest room doors are secure but old-fashioned with glass panels in the middle, so you can hear EVERYTHING going on in the hallway (i.e. loud inebriated conversations). Bring […] some earplugs and you won't really notice. Breakfast was sort of lame (bagels on Wednesday and Friday, otherwise just toast and pastries), but Starbucks is a block away. "Great for young unpretentious business travelers"
Good location, friendly staff, well maintained, nice terrace for breakfast, but... There are 2 main issues. Fist is noise in the room. Ask room that has no view on the streets. Old fashion window design do not protect from night sounds from drunk crazy junk bustards that shouting by 3 o'clock every night, thats makes jet lag horrible. The second is […] breakfast that looks like English, but not what you expect in USA. You start to recollect breakfast in Holliday Inn as a cooking masterpiece comparable what you get in Gaslamp Plaza. It also sounded as a resort, but there are no pool or even hot tab. Shower is hello fron 70-s, the water stream is so weak but make sound like from group of elephants. Dear managers, please renovate the shower gear, change the windows, install the hot tab on roof and the hotel become really fascinating. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Great location. Room was a comfortable size. We had a one bedroom and it only had a compact refrigerator, just like the hotel rooms, not full size or even apartment size which was inconvenient because we brought groceries.
