We enjoyed this hotel and its convenient location. Room was luxurious and very nice. It is on the trolley and bus routes for going to all of the popular places. My wife and I stay at only two hotels in San Diego and this is one of the two. The U.S. Grant is an old iconic hotel which is right in the middle of where you want to be in San Diego. If you love historic hotels like we do, this is the place for you right in the heart of the Gaslamp District. The restoration is beautiful and they have done a good job documenting the history of the hotel in an exhibit in what used to be the carriage entrance. Not well marked but worth the time to see are the photos on the lower level and if you keep […] wandering you will find the Crystal Ballroom which is spectacular. The Harbor area is an easy one mile walk but the trolley stop is also right behind the hotel. You can walk to the Midway and the Surprise and also to Horton Plaza for shopping and the Gaslamp for jazz and partying the night away...no driving. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I only mention thie following because another reviewer had a similar issue. We asked for late check out but housekeeping came knocking at 8:00am. We were up and on our way out so not an issue for us but I could see (as another reviewer pointed out) if I had spent a night drinking in the Gaslamp, the 8am wake up call would have been unpleasant. "Worst room I've stayed, great location!"
When I booked our hotel I specifically requested a room with a city view. Instead we received a room that felt like we are in dungeon and our window was facing a window of other room. Didn't get any sun in our room and was very hard to tell what time it is. also had to keep our curtains closed at all times as it felt that we are sharing our room with […] someone else (that's how close we were to the room that our window was facing). Restroom is right in a middle of your bedroom. When you open your bathroom door it can touch your bed. Another thing that was very inconvenient about it that bathroom door was a glass and it was see through. I also saw a review saying that street noise wasn't problem at all. Really, because I could hear it all, thank god I grew up in a city so it didn't bother me much. Other then that service was good. We requested to clean our room and they send two person to clean up. Was very fast and they called us several times to make sure it was done. Location is great, right in a middle of everything: restaurants, clubs and bars. You can walk and no need for car. Watch out for parking, it is $35.00. Try to find closer parking for cheaper price if you don't want to pay full amount for Valet Parking. I would recommend this hotel only in one condition if you have better room that we did, as most important part for me is our room and not much of service of concierge as I don't see them much and I am there to enjoy my stay not a company of concierge.
