"Great hotel"
The staff here is excellent - the room had its issues - but I think many people staying in SD hotels have the same complaint, they can be loud when you're trying to sleep. "Great place for a comfortable stay"

The room was delayed for availablity and the room was quite warm. When asked to cool it down, they said it only goes to 65 (a warm 65). The breakfasts were delicious. The best thing was the concierge, Brooks. He was extremely helpful and was able to answer all of my questions. The hotel should be VERY proud to have him as an employee. The room was quiet. "A 5 Star Hotel but where is the coffee"
I don't think asking for a cup of coffee at 6:20 in the morning is unreasonable. People leave for airports early and I, for one, like having a cup of coffee for the road. It would be easy to have coffee service in the lobby available for the early AM departing guests. "I will stay in another hotel next time"
In this luxury hotel, I naively assumed that when Wi-Fi was provided, it would be free. Finding out that I had incurred what I felt were unreasonably high charges for checking my email was a surprise. I also assumed that this 1910 hotel was historic because it was advertised as such, and that's the principal reason I booked it. But the poor hotel has […] been so extensively remodeled and trendily decorated that it has lost any feeling of historic ambience and authenticity. Very sad. That homeless men and women panhandled me as soon I went outside was even sadder, especially since many of the homeless men sitting and sleeping on nearby sidewalks and benches are Navy veterans who hold cardboard signs that state their year of enlistment. In contrast, I also saw large numbers of well-bred, well-groomed and well-behaved dogs being walked near the hotel. The facilities at the Hotel are adequate. Its location is ideal if you prefer to be in a downtown location. However, the attention of the personnel is not up to par for a , supposedly, four or five star rating. "Wotrth ever penny, absolutely fabulous"
This is the first time I have written a review for anything. This was a gamble as we normally stay on the water in San Diego. We were so delighted with the service, convenience (with the trolley) and luxury. We felt pampered as the congenial staff went out of their way to satisfy our every request or need. An extra perk for us was the trolley pick up […] and drop off at the convention center was actually a shorter walk than if we had stayed in hotels adjacent to the convention center. The trolley ride was only 7 minutes both ways to our seminars as opposed to the walk to the Marriott, Embassy etc. The staff was outstanding in everyway. "Sumptuous Hotel - bit of a gritty area"
The US Grant is truly a historic and luxurious hotel. Never thought that the use of chocolate brown and royal blue (?) could be so succesful. Very elegant lobby and great rooms too. It is downtown so not too much of a view -and the neighborhood is a bit "grity" - althought it is right across the street from Horton Plaza - a big shopping mall. When we arrived and the bellhop helped us with our luggage, he left it unattended downstairs for 20 minutes. We came back down to check on it after going up to our room and relaxing for a second and it was still there! Additionally, there was mold in our vent in the room. This is a classic old hotel that was redecorated several years back. The maintenance overall was poor as I had three bulbs burned out in my room. Someone should be checking these things. Also, while the decor was stylish, it was not practical. The sink, for example, had no place to put a shave kit.
