Kona Kai Resort

This was a wonderful, beautiful hotel. The staff was very nice and attentive. The room was very nice. We had a 1st floor room at which the sliding door faced the bay! We could walk out of that door, cross the street and be at the water. We brought a small dog with us, so it was very convenient to just open the door, and walk her. Its on a island, so […] not much traffic either. The only thing that we didn't care for was the restaurant food. To be fair though, we only got desert and breakfast, not a whole meal. The amenities were wonderful, there was a large pool, beach private beach, large lawn (in the back) for sunbathing or lawn games, and it has it's own private marina too, for those that would like to boat to the hotel. There was a musty smell of the room when closed up. Older hotel that needed a little more TLC. Restaurant and bar were disappointing. Our room was located too near the noisey pool maintenance motors. I love this resort. I will try to stay there any time I am in San Diego. Be warned, it's a little ways from downtown or a nightlife scene, but if you want quiet, picturesque, and serene there's no place I'd rather go.

Second girls' getaway to relax by the pool. Great ambiance- not too crowded, nice without being stuffy. Pool is large and clean with plenty of lawn chairs and great view of the marina. I have stayed at this resort twice before and have always had a great experience. The past experiences are the only reason me and my friends comeback to the Kona Kai every year. This experience was horrible. We did not get the two bed room that we paid for. The front desk tried to put us in a handicap room that had a pull out couch and a shower that […] was not up to anyones standards in my party. The hotel then gave us another room with a king size bed. The second room had a odor to it and the one bed was not comfortable. In the morning I tried to get the style of room I had paid for and was met with a bunch of excuses of how the hotel was full and there was nothing they could do. Next time I will gladly pay the extra money and stay at the Dana. They have always been accommodating. Never again will I stay at Kona Kai resort. Read more

The location and views were lovely. Hotel staff were courteous but did not follow through in a timely manner when asked for assistance. Room was clean enough, but tub looked dirty even tho it was not. There was nothing to use for a nightlight and the overall lighting was poor - especially in the bathroom. Don't get a first floor room because then the […] gardeners are right there mowing and trimming, and people are walking and talking on the path right outside your little patio area. So, we arrived at the hotel at around 5pm. Once we gave our name, we were immediately directed to a manager which is never a good sign. The manager proceeds to tell us they oversold the rooms and moved us to a "comparable hotel" which wound up being The Crowne Plaza in hotel Circle. So, this review was based off of the accommodations of the "comparable […] hotel" they sent us. If the Kona Kai resort wants to compare themselves with this hotel, I would never stay there. The manager did find us a room there and paid for the room. We currently have not been reimbursed the hotel costs as he mentioned Hotels.com would do. Interestingly enough, the manager didn't invite us back for a complimentary stay to enjoy their property. The Crowne Plaza in Hotel Circle was a generic hotel that had mediocre accommodations similar to that of a Holiday Inn. The stay was less than stellar. Read more

Attractive hotel. Not close to public transit, but the shuttle drivers are willing to get you to a bus stop. Note: you need to call the shuttle to pick you up at the airport since it doesn't run on a regular schedule. The breakfast deal was good and the restaurant has a pretty view of the marina.

Beautifully surrounded by San Diego Bay. The sea lions woke us up in the early morning but the fresh salt air so was wonderful we did not want to close our patio door. The balcony was small but nice. The furnishings were older but well kept. The staff were very pleasant. Would stay again. Great value for the price.

We could have stayed in downtown San Diego, but chose to stay where we could be more relaxed and go into the city if and when we wanted to. Loved the patio with gentle breeze and great water views. Nearby are several good and unique restaurants and all the services you could need. Really enjoyed Miguel's Mexican Restaurant and Point Loma Seafood. Also, […] it is very easy to get to Old Town or Sea World from this hotel without having to get on the freeway or drive into city traffic. I chose to stay at Kona Kai "Resort" with friends while visiting San Diego. Although the service at the front desk was fine, service everywhere else was SLOW. To the point we usually had to go find our waiter, waitress or other staff. They really did not seem to care about helping their guests at all. The hotel itself needs major renovation. The carpet […] on the stairs is duct taped together. This is so they can drag your suitcases upstairs, since there is no elevator. Also, if you plan to visit gaslamp or other surronding areas, the hotel shuttle will not take you. You are lucky if you can get it to take you back to the airport. For taxi's from the hotel to Gaslamp or downtown, you will expect to spend $25 to $30 each way. The pool area was okay, but again was old and needs to be refurbished. I would not recommend this hotel, especially since there are so many great choices in the San Dieog area. Read more
