"Very good family vacation base camp.."
This was a good fit for our family (2 adults, 2 kids). We had a "waterfront suite" with 2 queen beds and a separate living room. Other reviews indicated that these rooms were dated and that was the case. But functionality and comfort are very important for a family trip and that's what we found with the Hyatt. Pluses: location near freeways made it […] easy to get to many places (Zoo, SeaWorld, Legoland, etc.); nice pools for families; good room and pool food service; nice spa; Einstein's Bagel shop was a quick walk from our room and the espresso was good; boat rental was a hit with the kids; and service at the hotel was generally good. Minuses: room was dated; cleanliness not great (found probably a two-week old, moldy take out box still crammed into the top shelf of the fridge); fridge was very low and in a bad location; lighting in general not great; pretty marginal movie options, especially for the kids; self-parking fee was almost as much as the daily rental rate for our car!; not many food or shopping options within walking distance, but a 5-10 minute drive gives you a lot of options; tried to use the self checkout on the TV but it did not work properly. Although it was conveniently located near the amusement park, I don't think we would stay here again. It is not what we had expected since it was newly renovated? For the price we paid, I expected to be in the new rooms, not the old wing next to the parking lot. The rooms were small, muggy, dark and dusty! The bathroom had dark brown spots on the walls […] and tub and seem very outdated. There was no parking because there was a wedding. but since we paid for self park with our room the valet guy told us to check underground below one of the other wing of rooms. Oh and the elevator was broken going down! Fortunately we were in the old building with only 2 floors so we could walk down the stairs with all of our stroller, luggage and kids! Since our room was facing the parking lot, it was loud at night as people come in and out of the lobby. The Red Marlin restaurant over looking the marina was pretty good but not much of kids menu. The next morning before we checked out we took the kids to the pool. The big pool had algae collecting by the edge of the stairs. We waited at the pool for the slides that were supposed to be open at 10am. Apparently the lifeguard didn't show up or something so the slides had water running but not open for the 10 kids that were waiting around for it. Very disappointing experience there overall. Our stay was great! The view from our room (2320) was wonderful! BUT the carpet was dirty , the locks in the bathroom & the door that leads to the living room is so hard to grasp! "Great pool and spa but rooms showing a bit of wear"
We really enjoyed our stay. Staff was excellent and the room was nice enough. The best things were the pool and spa. My children could not get enough of the water slides even though we were unlucky to get some cold, overcast weather. Having life guards on duty was reassuring and very helpful. The food & drink service at the pool was great and having […] the Einstein Bagel cafe at the hotel to get hot tea and coffee on tap was a great bonus with the weather. The pool area was spotless and everything was very well maintained. The tropical planting around the grounds was lovely. Our room had some stains, wallpaper coming away from the wall in the bathroom, and a worrying amount of green mold in the fluorescent light fixtures in the bathroom ceiling. The bed coverings over the box spring mattress were frayed and droopy. So, the room could have been nicer but the hotel overall was very nice. A solid 4 star hotel experience. The massage and treatments at the Blue Marble Spa were excellent. The hotel gym is quite small but has excellent views over the marina. The food at the formal restaurant and the pool side bar/restaurant was good but not amazing. "Fun & Clean but I had issues"
The outside looked inviting. We had a lot of fun on the water slides. However, they had no towels when we were done swimming and I had to wait an hour for towels. The weather was chilly so the wait was terrible. When I first arrived the safe was locked and the frig was broken. The front desk stated it would take 20 min for help but it was longer. Also, […] when I arrived we had no toliet paper. The maid did a nice job of cleaning but never gave us toliet paper. When it was time to check out the hotel wanted to charge me for the room again. "So-So Stay in SD"
Went for a family weekend and had a nice rate via hotels.com. However, this Hyatt property is lacking in a few ways - no "decent" coffee, the coffeemaker was either missing a part or cartridge, the housekeeping was a little so-so. I mean, I have a preschooler and it's not cool to find a (presumably used) tissue next to one of the beds (up by the headboard) […] in the bedroom. The rooms are remodeled but still "feel" old. I also don't like the Hyatt's "ginger jasmine" soap theme - it's cloying. There are also limited dining options. The Red Marlin on property is great for breakfast albeit pricey. Dinner was also OK but expensive. But the SWIM cafe - guys, you can do interesting, organic, live food without being BORING. I felt like I was on the Food Network where the judges say the food is boring and trying hard to be something else. The TV is basic cable and I think for what you pay you should be able to be upgraded to get a few of the premium channels. There was no channel appropriate for the littlest kid in our party like Disney or cartoons that she could watch during down time. The service was good all around, though I never did access or get my $75 per day "resort credit", whatever that was supposed to be. My daughters enjoyed the pool. Not likely to be back. We researched hotels for a very long time looking for something to fit our needs. We have a toddler and baby so we needed a hotel that had suites, but not at an outrageous price. Maybe the tower is better, but the 2 story MOTEL buildings from the 70's they put us in were old, smelly, and dirty. you couldn't open the windows for fresh air cause the raised freeway is the same height as our second story window and about 200 feet away so the motorcycle racing felt like it was in your ear. so take your pick, close the window and […] smell the stink or open the window and listen to semi trucks all night. "Would Stay again"
After reading some of the other reviews I was a bit nervous as to what we would encounter during our stay. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I did notice that the top drawer of the dresser did come open after putting clothing in it but I folded up a piece of paper to help wedge it close and it worked fine. The room key was a bit tricky […] and had to try several times before we could get the door open but we didn't contact anyone about it, we just dealt with it. Had we contacted someone about it I'm sure it would have been taken care of. The room was very clean and our view was amazing. Very nice hotel. Great pool. However, the pool stays open until 11:30pm and they play very loud music until that time. I figured I would make it up by sleeping in, but the music and pool starts back up again at 8:00am. One day a high pressure washer cleaned the pool area down at 7:30am and it was extremely loud. Also, there are three pools, but none […] are designated for kids or adults so the hundred or so kids ruled all three. They should really have one that adults can relax in. I had my kid so this didn't bug me too much, but it was obvious that the adults without kids were pretty much excluded from using the pool in peace. The kids remained until 11:30 each night. This was a great place for us and our young children to stay. It was close to almost everything we wanted to see in San Diego. The pool and waterslides were great. "Wonderful Stay on the Bay"
We took our family vacation for 5 days at the Hyatt and were overwhelmed with the perks! Waterslides were fun, food at Swim poolside bar was fantastic and the water taxi to Seaworld was a pleasant surprise! The beds were super comfy and we loved waking up to "Honky" the seal each morning. The Einstein Bagel Company on the property makes the best mushroom, […] spinach and egg sandwiches on your choice of bagel; we picked them up with coffee / hot chocolate each morning for under 20.00 (three person family!) and ate on our balcony overlooking the beautiful marina. The only downfall was the Main restaurant, the Red Marlin. We had a late dinner after Seaworld, ordering a scallop-pasta dish and a couple appetizers to snack on; the crabcakes are one to an order for 16.00 and tasted very fishy...like catfood; the rest of the dishes were just so-so, we drank only water and the bill was over 90.00! The best hidden secret is the Sportsman's Seafood fish and chips right along the marina, walking distance from the hotel. Inexpensive and fresh from the Bay! We were discouraged from trying this wonderful find by Joseph the concierge; when he said It's really like a fish market, only the fishermen eat there". Our answer was, "That's exactly what we needed to hear!" I would have given five stars for service if it had not been for the snooty attitude of this employee. The rest of the staff was extremely polite, including Duane our Bellman who explained all the assets of the hotel as well as the surrounding area. This hotel is next to all the major freeways but is nestled in beautiful tropical gardens, with firepits in the evening and even a "smores" area for the kids. I would definitely return to the Hyatt! My wife, toddler son and I spent 3 nights a the Hyatt in mid-August. The pools with the slides are great, but it go so crowded on Saturday that half the people had to "lounge" on folding chairs. No prob the other days though. Morning fog that can hang around made for better days away from the hotel. Bike paths link you to a loop of the entire bay, which […] is nice. Many cool and casual restaurants were within 1 -2 miles but scarcely anything is within walking distance. The water taxi to Sea world got us an hour in near solitude as we beat all the driving public to the park - pretty nice. Friendly staff. $20/day parking is kind of lame, but not that unusual. We were traveling with two adults and one 4 year old... we wanted a "nice" hotel with beach/ocean views. We couldn't have found a better place. The views were amazing. The recently remodeled hotel felt swanky and new and clean. Plenty of kids activities, great pool, easy access to Mission Beach and Sea World. We are very happy we chose to stay here […] and will stay again I'm sure! The only #4 rating I gave out of 5 stars was for Cleanliness of room. This is because the maid staff cleaned and organized our room meticulously the 1st time. Day 2 was not as thorough and Day 3 they ran out of clean cups and small towels. While the booking through hotels.com was not a disappointment the Hyatt Hotel was. Everyone I talked to said the Hyatt was usually a classy hotel and very upscale and after viewing prices I really thought it would be. Sadly I must say the Hyatt at the marina in San Diego was a dissapointment. When I tried to check in, my room was not ready they did […] however offer me a hadicapp room and although similar the bathroom set up was not quite what I wanted. The Hotel also was outdated and there seemed to be this old smell to it which most hotels have but for the price I would have thought they would have had a air freshner in the room.
