Phillips Exeter Academy built the Inn in 1932 for family and guests of the students. Picture the families taking the train from Boston, walking the several blocks to the Inn, gathering with the student in one of the parlors or eating in the dining room. The Academy is several blocks up the street. The Exeter inn's rooms are the size of a small but comfortable […] and functional dorm room containing a full bahroom and closet. They are modernized in keeping with he '30s but have luxurious ammenities like nice soap, thick robes, generous bedding and pillows and flat screen tv. We loved the room and slept soundly. Excellent price for the breakfast. Easy access to the rest of Exeter as well as highway. only stayed one night as we were visiting friends, very comfortable and relaxing feeling, didn't get to check out the bar, but breakfast was nice having choice of continetal or standard breakfast fare, very reasonable and polite staff. Chocolate chip cookies were great.

Most on the stay was great despite the hotel pipes being frozen, but the bartender/restaurant staff seem to be on a power trip--they need to realize that they are there as part of the hotel, and not as part of a beach bar. Cater to the client, fellas!

I loved it. I wish I could have enjoyed the facilities longer (checked in at midnight and left at 7:30am). The hotel and room were very nice. Our only complaint was about the bathroom, the shower just had a glass wall that only covered half of the front of the shower. Therefore we had a flood every morning.

We have been staying here every summer for a multi day horse show. It is clean, quaint and charming. Excellent food and nice to get a warm cookie in the evening. Walking distance to town with lots of shops and restaurants. Highly recommend.

Exeter Inn is set in a great location in a wonderful little town. The Inn was surrounded by beautiful homes in tree lined streets. It was also a short drive to coast activities. I will go back again.

I only stayed one night while visiting a family member but I would definitely stay there again. I had reserved a room with one queen bed for myself and my granddaughter. A grandson decided to go at the last minute and the inn upgraded me to a room containing two queen beds without an additional charge.

This was an especially lovely Inn. The room was absolutely beautiful and extremely clean. We were upgraded from a king to a king suite which was a very generous surprise! We tried the cocktail lounge, which was great and had some unusual house specialties. There were freshly baked cookies at the front desk. The Exeter Inn is a nice place, but the room we stayed at was almost comically small. It lacked a dresser and all but the smallest table. A queen-sized bed took up nearly the entire space. The bathroom was so small that you had to tuck yourself into the corner to close the door and the there was virtually no counter space in there. This is a great old hotel made new. Everything is renewed while keeping the good old bones. Almost across from the Phillips Exeter School is a great place to stay for visiting family. The hotel itself has a nice, up-class feel and they provide some nice amenities (cookies at turn-down, nice robes, good quality bedding). Staff seemed helpful and friendly. Things were quiet so we were upgraded to a king-size bed. However, the room itself was in need of care. The baseboard and window trim were in need of repainting with very noticeable […] chipping. Additionally, the bathroom tile was stained and cracked. These things could possible be overlooked, but the room itself was not cleaned adequately; on check-in I found a peanut, a large pile of fuzz, and an ear plug on the floor. Even a mediocre vacuuming would have picked these things up. I'd like to recommend this hotel, but I would have to be assured that the above issues were taken care of before I could do so. Read more

We had arranged to check in about 20 minutes early and upon arrival the room was not ready. We were put in another room that was to be exactly the same. There was no desk or any surface to work on my computer. I called room service for a cup of tea and was told it would take no more than 10 minutes. Half an hour later it arrived. When we returned from […] the wedding we were there to attend we discovered the sheets were like sandpaper. When we checked out we found out that the room we were in was the smallest room in the hotel, not at all like the room we had reserved and the manager would call us with an adjustment. That never happened! In addition, the lobby smelled foul when we arrived and the breakfast service in the restaurant was appallingly bad. This hotel is way overpriced for what it is. The Exeter Inn was renovated in 2008 - and the while the new interior is more modern and updated - it no longer feels like an old New England inn. Our room was small but functional for one night. For longer stays - a sitting area would have been nice - so a larger room... The restaurant was also updated - a little garish with red accents (my wife's […] comment - and I agree). The food was good, the service excellent, but I think we'll check out some of the more interesting restaurants in the town center next time - a short walk away. We made last minute plans to visit Portsmouth but there were no lodgings available so we happened on the Exeter Inn. What a great find! We were happier here than in a formulaic chain hotel in Portsmouth. This is really a delightful place, low key and in a lovely community.
