The room was very nice, but did have a slight odor that was a bit unpleasant. After running the A/C for a while, it seemed to subside. Aside from that, the room was very nice, though the bathroom was a little small. My biggest complaint is that check-in time was at 4:00pm. First impression was not good. As per a earlier review. There was a moldy smell in the air. I opened the hallway window and smell in hall way went away. It's a two story hotel and does not have an elevator. Room was not very big but noticed another room that was being cleaned, and was much larger then mine. My husband and I stayed in this on the start of a road trip. The desk clerk was very helpful, and gave us information on where the local eat, must see places in Portland, and tips on how to get around town. The room was clean and comfortable. The mirror was only attached to the wall on the top, and my husband caught a metal part of the mirror by a magnet it pulled away from the wall making us concerned that it would fall off, and the handle of the shower fell off. We told the hotel about our concerns, and the desk clerk did say that they would send maintenance to check all the mirrors, and fix the handle. Overall decent price, comfortable, and friendly. Well, this Shilo property advertised mini suites . . showed photos on the web page of a couch in the view on the ad. Well, just returned from the property and can say we did not have any other casual seating but the chair at the desk !! When we went to the desk and asked, "We booked a mini suite, we were informed that ALL of our rooms are mini suites!!" […] I spent 31+ years before retiremnet living out of suitcases on the UPRR, I know a suite, a mini suite and a room. This is a room, a small one!! Be aware, if you consider this Shilo property. I reguarly stay up after my lady retires, on the computer or watching TV, this property will not be the best bet for you. The cable was fuzzy the WHOLE time no matter what channel. It has 2 floors with no elevator. Also we were told no one was on either side or us or below us. Well around 6am they started hitting the wall for 30mins + straight then people kept coming in and out from then on. Horrible!!!!

The day we checked it it was New Years afternoon and there was one woman working the front desk all alone. She explained she was usually the night aduitor and ..and was trying VERY hard to keep up the the large crowd of people waiting to check in. SHE was very nice, friendly and but was clearly overwhelmed. Shilo needs to have more help on a busy night […] like this!! I think the woman needs a bonus for what she endured. On New Years day we got to the Free continental breakfas at 10 minutes after 9am.the door was locked and no breakfast for us. My freind asked the day manager if it was over..he was rude to him in return and said something like. "well it closes at 9, it's over!" I mean it was NEW YEARS DAY..for crying out loud! You think they could have stayed open later for that day considering many people may sleep in later than usual. Mostly it was his rudeness that disturbed us the most!! Three of us were going to a convention at the Doubletree, eight blocks away, and the Shilo Inn Rose Garden was handy to that. We had a rollaway in our double-queen room, which made it a bit cramped, but worked. Downside: tiny, cramped bathroom, hard to open the door once you were inside. Close to the MAX station; close to McMenamins (awesome food); close to Rose Garden. This hotel has the basic amenities expected, but our A/C did stink. There are 2 floors and no elevator. The breakfast was decent---yogurt, cereal, bages...no fresh fruit or eggs. The coffee makers in the room only do 1 cup at a time, sortof inconvenient.

My only complaint is that I booked a non-smoking room, and was giving a room that had definitely been smoked in. There was a burn hole in the bedspread, and we could smell the smoke residue. I have allergies, so this was a big deal to me.

The staff is friendly and attentive when a mattter is brought to their attention. The biggest issue is that when we checked in the conforter on one of our beds was covered with either human or animal hair/ first impresions matter. This poor hotel is in need of an overall. Overall only marginally clean, and is run down. The staff, however, was great and very accomodating. We stayed because of the price and location-Portland has free public transit downtown, and you can walk to the lines from the hotel. We stayed 3 nights at this hotel. It was comfortable and quiet. However, the first day we were in the room just after noon when the maid arrived and just walked in without knocking. She seemed surprised to see us and asked if we needed service. We told her no, just if we could have some fresh towels and coffee cups. She left and never returned. When we went to the front desk to inquire, the man on duty actually scolded us and said the do not disturb sign was up. We had DEFINITELY removed the sign when we left as we really wanted clean towels, toilet paper, glasses, cups and coffee. He did bring us 2 bath towels and a roll of toilet paper a little later. In my experience, you cater to guests and get them what they need. If the housekeeper told him our sign was up, they lied. What happened to the customer being right? We will not return to this hotel. We have stayed at the Shilo Inn Portland Rose Garden several times, so we know what we're getting... clean, comfortable accommodation at a reasonable price. Positives: Easy walking distance to the MAX light rail train which gives free transportation into downtown Portland; free on-site parking (other motels charge around $20 per night); friendly, helpful […] staff. Comfortable bed, clean. Negatives: Free continental breakfast was very, very limited for our three nights this trip: Dry cereal, a few sweet pastries, bagels (no cream cheese or jam) and coffee were all that was available. We got sincere apologies from staff from the first morning, but it didn't improve. The air conditioning had a very powerful smell - apparently due to its not having been run for some time. The room carpet was very stained. Bathroom is tiny, and it requires a bit of agility to open the door and exit. Read more

We stayed there for 2 days. Other than yogurt and dry cereals, they ran out of bread and other breakfast items. They claimed that the supplier did not show up (on both days). It can't be that difficult to buy a few loafs of bread and muffins from the near by grocery stores. The internet and cable services were interrupted frequently.
