see all hotels in Portland"Terrible check in experience"
We were checked in on 08/11/11 by Jamie at the front desk - although we had booked (and paid for) a queen/queen room, she put us into a double/double...when I pointed out that it should actually be a queen/queen, she said "nope" and gave us our keys. Once I checked my reservation online and confirmed it was a queen/queen (which I had to prove to her), […] she grudgingly gave me the keys to a dark room on the 2nd floor close to the meeting rooms...I asked for a different floor, and was (grudgingly again) given a room on the 9th floor. Once we moved our bags from the original room (on our own), I returned to the lobby, where Jamie loudly asked in front of other customers "what did you decide - because the people that were going to check into that room are here now", which made me feel as though I was a huge inconvenience. It would have been so simple to give us the correct room once the error was noted, and apologize. As an experienced traveller who frequents several 4 and 5 star hotels in a year, I was horrified by the terrible service (as were our friends who also booked at the Monaco at my urging!) - never having stayed at a Kimpton before, the reviews on TripAdvisor influenced my decision to book there - now I have learned my lesson; I will stick with chains I know! It unfortunately soured my visit to Portland...on a positive note, the rooms were clean and spacious, and the 5 pm wine/beer reception was a great place to meet other travellers.
