A classic in downtown Portland, but with all the up to date amenities. The room was very nicely laid out and appointed, even though it was of modest... size. We listened to jazz in the lounge, and enjoyed free wine tasting in the hotel's library of nearly 3000 books, each of which was written by a former guest and most of which were signed. There is a fully certified librarian who can tell you all the stories of the authors' stays at the hotel. Truly a delight. The only negatives had to do with how long it took to get served in the lounge and the restaurant, but I believe these were just momentary glitches. Location.
The Heathman Hotel is located in downtown Portland, Ore., in the financial and cultural district. The hotel is adjacent to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The hotel sits one block from the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. Pioneer Courthouse Square and the Oregon Historical Society are two blocks away. Portland State University is six blocks away.

Hotel Features.
The Heathman Hotel lobby features a commissioned mural of an 18th century Japanese Buddhist silk robe. Built in 1927, the hotel includes Art Deco style with gold-leafed antique-style furnishings. The hotel serves regional cuisine with French influences at the Heathman Restaurant. The on-site Tea Court serves teas seasonally and includes a marble fireplace and an Austrian hand-cut chandelier. The Marble Bar features an Art Deco mirror from the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. The Mezzanine offers dining and meeting space overlooking the Tea Court and features artworks from the Elizabeth Leach Gallery. The hotel's meeting space accommodates up to 150 guests. Business services and complimentary high-speed Internet access is provided. Safe-deposit boxes are available. The on-site library maintains a collection of more than 3,000 signed works by authors including Joyce Carol Oates and Tom Wolfe. The hotel's third-floor fitness center includes cardiovascular and weight training equipment. Live jazz is performed at this Portland hotel Tuesday through Saturday evenings.

The Heathman Restaurant & Bar - This restaurant uses local ingredients and French flair to create a distinctive “French Northwest” cuisine. Menu changes seasonally and includes a five-course Chef's Tasting Menu. Extensive wine list. Chocolate desserts are popular with after-theater crowd. Outdoor seating available (weather permitting). Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This fine dining restaurant's Director of Culinary Affairs, chef Philippe Boulot, was awarded the James Beard Best Chef of the Pacific Northwest in 2011.

Marble Bar - Stylish lounge across from the restaurant features tall windows and original art by Richard Gruetter. Northwest microbrews, wines by the glass, and light fare are offered from late morning until late evening.

The Tea Court - Meticulously restored room next to the lobby features a marble fireplace and vaulted ceiling with an Austrian hand-cut chandelier. A grand staircase and live jazz provide a sophisticated setting for appetizers, cocktails, and dinner service from the hotel restaurant. Live jazz Tuesday-Saturday evenings. Seasonal afternoon tea. I highly recommend the Heathman. Great staff, luxurious rooms with super comfortable beds. Don't miss the chocolatier/ espresso bar in the corner of the lobby! The sipping chocolate is out of this world and the coffee is top notch. I hear the restaurant in the hotel is really good, but we walked to Higgins up the street and were absolutely blown away […] there! The location of the Heathman is perfect. We met our friends who flew in from Las Vegas for a quick visit. The hotel is in great physical shape, and all staff people had such pride in their hotel. Have staying before, but in what seemed like a much larger room. Sink in bathroom was almost too small to wash hands!!! BUT overall we were very pleased to stay in Heathman again. Restaurant and hotel might communicate better. We foolishly assumed that guests of hotel could be assured a spot for breakfast - no.

The best part of the stay was meeting the hotel librarian. She hosts a wine tasting for hotel guests. The library showcases books written only by authors who have stayed at the hotel. It was truly the highlight of the trip to meet her and learn more about this unusual feature of the hotel. Plus the books are available for loan to hotel guests.

I visited Portland with my daughter for a few days of R&R from Alaska. I had wanted to stay at the Heathman in city center since it is so easy to access from the airport using the MAX system. We found The Heathman to be lovely, well appointed, centrally located, and perfectly staffed for our enjoyment! We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to the Portland area. We especially loved the bar happy hour, a wonderful way to unwind after a day of exploring the many neighborhoods which surround the hotel's downtown location.

My sister and I ( two old ladies) enjoyed the restaurant which served excellent food, and were especially impressed with the friendly and helpful service. Our only gripe was a wish that the bathroom vanity lighting had been better. Great little hotel.
