Good location: great running/walking paths, walking distance to Whalers Village shopping. Beautiful grounds and beach. Friendly, not pretentious. Attracts quality guests. Hotel average, but nice. A bit worn down. Staff was friendly and responsive. No fitness facility. We upgraded room from old to undated. Pools just ok. We have older kids so pool wasn't […] an issue. The pools are not attractive for those with younger children. Restaurant just ok. Overall, good place for base location. Once we upgraded room, we didn't need anything else at hotel except the beach. Unfortunately, this was not our best experience in Maui. We had a maintenance issue in our room - when we flushed the toilet something was coming up in the shower. We were not pleased with our outcome in this matter.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Royal Lahaina Resort Mahalo for the feedback. We’re sorry to hear that this guest was not pleased with the outcome regarding the plumbing issue in their room towards the end of their stay. As it was explained, the toilette and shower are set up with two separate plumbing systems with separate venting systems as well. It is likely that the shower drain was clogged, coincidentally, at the same time the toilette was flushed. We did apologize for the inconvenience, and immediately went to clear the shower drain, which has been functioning properly ever since. We realize that unexpected issues may occur that are unpleasant, and everything we do to correct them is an effort to make our guests’ stay more comfortable and enjoyable, and we always encourage guests to let us know if they are not pleased on how we handle any situation, and what we can do so that they do feel satisfied. We regret not being one of their best experiences in Maui, however we remain thankful for the feedback, and hope they enjoyed their Maui Vacation. A hui hou!

"Outdated hotel. Decent."
it was a nice idea to stay in a cottage but the outside noise was definitely a downer. The room needs update...badly. It was considerably smaller than the other 2 rooms we booked at the same time. We booked 3 rooms through expedia but we were not assigned rooms close to each other :(. the TV was old and the door to the outdoor patio was so hard to open. I […] think we overpaid for these rooms. "fair priced hotel"
We stayed at the suite in one of the cottages. Thank God I upgraded to suite because below us were 4 small rooms and they seem very small. Our cottage building needs some remodeling. Bathrooms in particular, showers and faucets were very old and runny. Air conditioners were very old and one worked ok and second one was not working very well. Also, be […] aware that due to some cottages face golf cource they do grass cutting and blowing very early in the morning (5am) - that was not very pleasant. Otherwise most of the services were OK, we did had some issues reaching room service couple of times and few of front desk employees were not so fast to service you. Overall, we got what we paid for it and our vacation was very nice. Location of the hotel is very good and easy to get to and from and lots of activities around. "Nice location but worn"
The property is a great location on the beach just north of the 'black rock' with beautiful grounds, nice pools, beach front, etc.. The beach is much less crowded than the main Kaanapali beach, but it's a short walk if you want to go there. We stayed in a garden cottage room for a family wedding, which I liked as it was roomy and you have the feeling […] of being in a private house rather than a high-rise hotel, though they do have a high-rise building if that's what you want. The service was excellent, especially the bellmen who dealt with about 30 of us arriving with cars full of Costco supplies! The downside was that the cottage had seen better days, and was not as clean as I would have expected. The carpet near the sliding door was badly stained, the bathroom had peeling paint, and the tub/shower had moldy grout. I know this is hard to control in Hawaii's climate, but this is a luxury hotel and fairly expensive. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Royal Lahaina Resort Thank you for the feedback on your experience here at the Royal Lahaina Resort. We are sorry to read that the cottage room you stayed in did not fully meet your expectations and standards. I originally chose the cottage room. Upon checking into the room, I immediately asked for an upgrade to the tower. The cottage room I was assigned had an outdated TV and a moldy smell. Parking cost $10 daily, very hard to find parking space, parking spaces very tight, only two handicap parking places. "A week getaway, nothing luxurious"
This was a downgrade from luxury, I would say. It did the job as a hotel room with a shower but there were many cons about this hotel. The hotel property was kind of outdated, the parking was far away and scarce, the housekeeping people did not leave us the same number of towels everyday. Everyday they differed. Sometimes we would get 2 bath towels, […] no hand towels or wash cloths, sometimes we wouldn't get a bath mat. It was kind of annoying. Also, they weren't really good about resupplying the shampoos, the ice bags, etc. Our view was pretty crappy on the 3rd floor and we asked for an upgrade, but they didn't have any. If you're spending majority of your time at the beaches and just coming back to shower and sleep, this will do the job just fine. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We were unexpectantly charged for self parking and even though the room itself was very comfortable it did not include a microwave,(standard in most hotels),or allow for smoking ,even on the balcony! !Also, the neighboring 'village' had no grocery store or even sell a few fresh vegetables or fruits, nor was there more than one auto rental availeable. […] The menu at the hotel restaurant was short and on at least two occasions we had to wait almost eight-ten minutes before being served! The ocean views (from the bar) were lovely,..of course, but was more than alittle disappointed in the snorkeling at nearby 'Black Rock',(not alot of fish or color). "Grade: B"
What we liked: Location was convenient if west Maui is where you want to spent majority of your time. Beautiful west facing beach front for the perfect sunset. Our rooms was clean and acceptably shielded from the hall noises. The staffs in general from bell men to the activity center are friendly but could use a bit more smiles. At the same time I also […] understand the wear and tear of daily encounters with the bratty tourists. The pools are well kept. Breakfast buffet was acceptably prepare but I recommend ordering from the menu if freshness is high on your priority. Dinner dishes are also acceptable in terms of timeliness, presentation, and taste. What needs to improve: Room service needs to wipe all surfaces clean and remove the visible sand from the shower and the quality control needs to do a better job confirming. Wider slots are needed for parking. The main entrance in general feels depressingly bare. Conclusion: For the same price I most likely will try else where since Royal Lahaina is very ordinary for its class. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"The cottage life"
We loved the overall feel of the hotel. Great location, beautiful beach, old hawaiian feel to the grounds. However if you stay in a cottage know what you are getting before you get there. Old furniture, outdated t.v. a bathroom begging for an update. My first thought was to move to the newly renovated tower, but since we were with extended family who […] was staying in the room next door we decided to tough it out and stay in the cottage. To my surprise the bed was comfortable, (not like a Four Season mind you) but not the worse either. Having a fridge in the room was a plus. Being able to walk out and eat breakfast with family on the lanai was nice. Watching the kids play on the lawn made for nice family memories. On the downside the shower was terrible. Just plain awful. The good just out weighed the bad in this case though. Would I stay there again? the answer would be yes! We were in Cabin H. It was outdated, with a very damaged countertop. The black smudges in and around the bathtub showed that housekeeping was not cleaning well or regularly. When checking in at the hotel, after 2 flights delays and spending the prior night in LA, the less than courteous lady at the front desk informed me I had requested a cottage. She asked if I had my reservations, I did but they were in the car, at that […] point I didn’t have the time or patience to deal with the situation, we took the cottage. As stated in prior posts, the cottage smelled like mildew, old & outdated and 100 tiny bugs in the bathroom. Later that day when getting ready for the Luau, all the power went out in the cottage, I called guest relations 3 times and no one answered. We had to go to my parent’s cottage to finish getting ready. The next day the lady at the front desk was more than willing to listen, and was able to move us to the tower in 2 days (no senior upgrade for my parents?). "Royal Lahina - Nice Beach"
Positives: We enjoyed our stay at the Royal Lahina. It was a beautiful property. The beach in front of the hotel was gorgeous and not crowded. They have a cute coffee and ice cream store and a little general store on the property. The service was friendly and the prices were reasonable. We stayed in a bungalow on the adjacent golf course. The hotel […] is conveniently located close to Lahaina town and we had amazing weather. Negatives: It was pretty noisy there. They started the mowers on the golf course at about 5am and between the maintenance crews, the cleaning crews, etc., . the buzzing didn't stop until late in the afternoon. Also, the hotel is not new so don't expect state of the art fixtures. The shower wasn't the best. Also, I noticed in the other reviews, that initially, the hotel didn't have the room that the guest had requested so they moved them after the first day - they did the same thing to us. The first night we slept on 2 double beds pushed together. Other: If you want a quaint eating place with good, cheap local food, go to the Ono Kau Kau Cafe which is just north of the hotel across the street from the Times grocery store. We ate there a lot and it was yummy. And the Mala Restaurant on the north end of Front St. in Lahaina has the most amazing Kobe Beef hamburger I've ever tasted. First day at the hotel, we were NOT greeted with a warm welcome with one of the receptionists behind the desk. She didn't seem like she was having a good day and was not very accommodating. The AC maintenance guys were […] not very helpful and blamed the AC not working on the fact that we had opened the balcony door, which we had only done for 5 seconds right before they had come in. When they finally switched our rooms at the end of the night, it was better, but the AC still seemed like it was not controlled by our thermostat. Their WIFI also did not work after several days of trying, none of the IT people knew what they were doing. My husband is a computer network engineer and tried every possible option to connect to the WIFI but was unsuccessful. The Tower is nice and clean with comfortable beds. The location is perfect - right in the beach. Pool and resort is very small and limited. Staff is not very friendly. "Nice hotel and location but staff not very nice"
We stayed at the Royal Lahaina June 2011 for our 25th anniversary. There are so many couples there for honeymoons and anniversaries that we quickly realized there was no real special treatment; the complimentary champagne was cheap and required a corkscrew from the gift shop, and the anniversary room upgrade turned into a sales pitch in which the check-in […] clerk repeatedly tried to offer us “deals” (expensive) room upgrades which we declined. Our oceanview room was nice, although the lanai (porch) was small it offered a wonderful view which we thoroughly enjoyed. The hotel restaurant, pools, facilities and beach were all very nice and we do recommend them; the beach is not overly crowded which is wonderful. The only really big negative is in regard to the staff who were really uncaring and pretty much acted like we were just an annoyance being there. Examples: I asked for directions to a snorkel trip and they said they can’t give me directions to it because they don’t book that one. What customer service! I was flabbergasted. Another: I asked to borrow a valet cart for our luggage and they rudely said no, you have to use a valet (so you have to tip them).
