Many members of Congress live in the brick row houses near the Capitol complex. Across the street, the Supreme Court—the third branch of government—interprets the law. The Mandarin Oriental is a high quality hotel. I think the DC hotel is just a little bit tired. The furniture in the common area needs an update, the room decor needs an update. The bed and bathroom are 5 stars but the rest is not a 5 star hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Close to the museums"
Our family had an excellent stay at the Mandarin Oriental over the holidays. The beds were comfortable, the rooms very quiet, and the shower fantastic. It was an easy walk to both the metro and the museums. The front desk and front door staff were very attentive, especially Phillipe. I would like for the hotel to have offered free Wi-Fi. Other less […] prestigious hotels we've stayed in have offered Wi-Fi; certainly for the cost of staying at this hotel this amenity could be offered. My only other negative comment is the service in the restaurant was slow and breakfast was pricey. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very Attentive"
The people who work at the Mandarin were attentive and took good care of us during our visit. Overall a nice place, and a comfortable bed. I was a little disappointed that the pillows smelled funny/dirty since we spent so much money to stay there. This is a nice place to stay if in D.C.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice Hotel in a dumpy hood"
Nice room, courteous staff. Upon entry to the room the A/C unit was making a loud ticking noise, which was resolved by maintenance. Was complementary "upgraded" to top floor for view, which was somewhat hindered by a scaffolding hanging from the roof and very dirty windows. Neighborhood is a dump, nothing goes on after 9 PM, and it doesn't feel safe […] to walk around in. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice hotel on waterfront"
Hotel is close to Maine Ave, just a pedestrian walk away from Phillips Seafood if you don't want to dine at one of the hotels restaurants. But if you're looking for breakfast on the weekend, you'll have to dine-in. Food was delicious. It's located in a business neighborhood and all starbucks are closed on the weekends because the businesses aren't open. […] Even the CVS that is across the street is closed at 5pm. If you want to shop, you'll have to take the metro. Valet parking was $49. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good location for sight seeing - not so good for restaurants"
We stayed here with our 3 young children. This is probably a better business hotel than it is for a family vacation. The location is great and the hotel is really pretty, but there are no restaurants nearby (other than a Potbelly's).Genuine Expedia guest review

"Not quite so 5 Star"
There is no doubt the hotel is very luxurious. My room had a city view and I had no complaints until I cast my eyes lower- I was right next to a railroad. Some trains were quiet, some trains were a few miles long and had diesels, so there was a little noise. Other than that, the surrounds are great, so very close to metro and the Washington Monument […] etc. The lounge and restaurants were excellent, the pool was great and the spa had a long list of treatments that were very expensive- but this is the Mandarin. The hotel was top notch for decor, ambiance and comfort. I did have one little disaster though. My expensive camera- and it was my fault- I misplaced it. I must have left it in the lounge. I reported it as missing. The front desk person was not too compassionate and took my number to let me know if they found it. My big problem was that the lucky recipient of the camera- either staff member or guest is not quite the 5 Star person the hotel itself claims to be. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

It was very sorry not to have any Asian restaurants in it. Everybody would imagine Oriental food to hear the name of this hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Pleasant experience"
Great spa, sauna, steam room, pool. We chose the hotel for these amenities. Other services a little overpriced (using the internet for 5 minutes in the business center will cost you more than 10 Dollars). Far away from restaurants. And pretty far actually also from the subway (>10 minute walk). Ugly exterior, but who cares. No stairs, for people who […] keep the Shabbat. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great service and location"
Well-needed Valentine's getaway for the wife and I. Service was stellar. Bed could have been firmer but was still comfortable. A few issues with room wear but overall great. Spa was fulley booked - I wish they would reserve space and time for hotel guests or make an exception - disappointing. The pool was packed with kids on both sides of the divider […] - nice pool. The sauna, dry and wet plus the plunge pool and the tropical rain shower was delectable. CitiZen restaurant was booked but we decided to go last minute and it was saturday night - still I wish they would accomodate hotel guests for this caliber hotel - there were only 2 of us. Great location to walk to the Jefferson Memorial and a short taxi to the Kennedy center for a performance. Dine-in room service was excellent; food was great but not exceptional. "the mandarin oriental Washingotn dc"
Thought the hotel was in a great location. The room however I would say was not what a five star hotel should look like. The furniture seemed to be old and not not very well attended to. The bathroom was quite large and very clean. Not enough pillows on the bed. May stay at the Ritz Carlton next time around.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Mandarin Oriental DC-not really 5 stars"
I've stayed at other Mandarin Oriental properties in the past. The service is 5 star like any other Mandarin. The facilities however, is only about a 3-4. Room decors were tired/chipped, lamp shades were loosely on, and the lightbulbs were unevenly bright. This was an upgrade from the hotel too. I know what I've stated were details, but a 5 star property […] is all about the details; if you're gonna spend the money, I expect the whole package. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Mandarin Oriental - five star hotel?"
We decided to treat ourselves to an overnight getaway at a five star hotel. The staff was pleasant and the hotel was beautiful. After arriving to our room, I was disappointed that there was a dark stain about 10" in diameter on the light tan carpet, a pieced of hardware missing from one of the drawers, and a small tear on the top sheet (outer cover) […] of the bed. We had access to the tai pan club lounge with our reservation. This lounge was not airconditioned adequately. I always felt a bit warm while relaxing in this room that allowed the sunlight to bake all the visitors. I didn't expect to experience any of these problems at a five star hotel. "Mandarin Oriental just so-so"
The service was fine, no complaints there. Everyone tried to be helpful, although the Concierge desk was rarely staffed and the front desk people tried to be helpful but knew little about restaurants or other practical information requested. But I biggest complaint, however, was the hotel restaurant. A simple breakfast for two (lox, bagel, cream cheese) […] was Sixty Dollars. At lunch, we had a hamburger, coke and piece of cake, while my wife had a Nicoise Salad. Again, Sixty Dollars. The hamburger was about as big as a solitary slider. The room decor was "fashionably ugly." I say this because the hotel is fairly new, so the old antique feel of it must have been intentional, but it looked worn out and old. Our room literally had a nail or a spike driven into the wall underneath a painting of half of someone's head. Hideous, really. For such a high priced hotel, it was very disappointing. I have stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in San Francisco, and it was immaculate and superior. The Washington, D.C. version does not live up to the chain's typical quality.
