Topaz Hotel, a Kimpton Hotel

I stayed at one of their other sister hotel in the past and enjoyed it very much, so I figured I would give the Topaz a shot. The room was big with beautiful decor, from the wall paper choices, furniture, and to the artwork. One thing that stood out was that there was an actual vanity where I could get ready at; I have one at home that I do this at […] everyday instead of hovering over a small sink with bad fluorescent lighting. I read a couple of the reviews on here as well and don't see how anyone could have a bad stay here. It was clean, quiet, beautiful, and the staff was amazing they even stopped to pet my dog and asked questions about him. The first day I arrived I got rained in and really couldn't go far, so I spent most of the day in this large room very satisfied with my choice I made with the Topaz Hotel. Had two issues w room. Door did not lock on exiting and phone would not dial front desk. They fixed immediately. Staff were super friendly and courteous. Room was enormous and quiet and clean. Would stay again without hesitation.

Very thrilled with my stay. The staff was friendly, helpful and welcoming. The room was large and quite comfortable. Everyone I encountered from the front desk staff to the maids to the bar tender were friendly and pleasant. Love the funky feel and great location. It was also quiet, which I appreciated.

From the moment I checked in, every aspect of the service was first rate. In the morning, when I asked to check my bags, the clerk asked if i had my car with me and volunteered to put the bag in the trunk. Thoroughly enjoyed my one-night stay in this boutique hotel. All the staff were friendly and made a real effort to make the stay enjoyable--front desk, housekeeping, bartender. Room was spacious and the decor was fun. A power strip by the bed was convenient for plugging in cell phones and I also loved the makeup vanity. Nice side street near restaurants […] and shops. Only downside was that the window view was of an alley/parking area, but it was quiet. Boutique in iots best sense: small, intimate, attentive, well-appointed, well-proportioned room. Very short walk to excellent next door restaurant. Considerably longer to other eateries, shopping. Definitely on my list for future DC trips.

I lived in DC and was familiar with Topaz's location. The reception staff demonstrated the prototype of what hospitality reception -- professionalism, friendliness, informative with a great, genuine smile. Room and decor are beautiful and pleasant. Location is superb in proximity to Dupont Circle and subway entrances.

I was initially worried because the price of the hotel was 60% what the other hotels were charging. However, the rooms were nice and well maintained. The internet was free and they offered guests a YMCA pass (located just around the corner). I'll definitely look for a Kimpton hotel the next time I travel.

Fabulous staff and nice rooms, but I asked two days in a row to have my air conditioning fixed - VERY loud tweeting all night. Nearly impossible to sleep. Staff claimed both times it was done. Not so, it was simply turned off so when I came in no noise until 3 am. Pretty frustrating.

The hotel is lovely and very nicely located near a lot of restaurants, Metro, Dupont Circle. The staff is friendly. The rooms are well appointed and quite large. We chose the hotel because it said that it was pet friendly and allowed dogs. However, on both days we were there the room wasn't cleaned until I called the front desk. The first day, it was […] cleaned at 3:30 pm, the second day, no one came in even after I called at 4 pm. Then I was told that the Housekeeping staff went home. They tried to explain the reason (which they never told me before) was that we had our two dogs there. This made no sense since the front desk told us it would not be a problem to clean the room with the dogs in there. We have two small Cockapoos who are extremely friendly. They finally cleaned the room (the head Housekeeper did it) but only after several phone calls to the Front Desk. They should get their act together regarding their pet friendly advertisement and outline the limitations for bringing pets, explaining that the owners should not leave the dogs alone, etc. on their Website or through Hotels.com. Hotel was okay, but for the price, I was expecting a lot more... they're attempting to be a trendy, boutique hotel, but it seems like they're ignoring the basics - they were understaffed for housekeepers after a sold out night before, so it took 3 hours for our room to be ready when we had requested early check-in (I know that's not always guaranteed, […] but 3 hours seemed a bit much)... there was only 1 bath towel in our room when we checked in and then later the housekeeper knocked on our door to bring us more (she wasn't able earlier to give us enough towels when she prepared our room because laundry wasn't done yet). When she cleaned our room the next day, they didn't have any washcloths for us because none were clean. Other basic things like change from the front desk, recommendations on restaurants, etc., were just lacking. Not a bad hotel, just not ready to be considered a boutique or trendy hotel yet. the hotel looked like it wasnt finished, cardboard boxes in the hallway and the smell of paint, the room was clean and there was a dressing room, which was nice, but the pillows were hard, the mattress uncomfortable, and it was not cheap. the neighborhood was super accessible.... i wouldnt stay here again

This used to be an apartment building so the rooms are larger than a usual hotel room. The location is excellent, right off Dupont Circle. The only negative is that the street is rather noisy. It didn't bother me as I am a sound sleeper but could perhaps bother some people.

The Topaz is a small, but stylishly renovated hotel just off DuPont Circle. Service is very good and the rooms are quite comfortable. The only -very minor - criticism is that the room did not have a coffee maker, which I like to have as an early riser. Definitely recommended

First off the receptionist was very accommodating, explaining everything to us without being impatient. Parking was a little problem but there's always somebody to help. Bringing the luggages to our room was also a little difficult because of the steps going to the elevator. We stay in DC a lot but this was our first visit to the Topaz. The Dupont Circle area was nice but the hotel was really disappointing. The hotel is old, the room smelled bad (there is a fabric wall covering at the head of each bed that is not cleaned after each use - ours smelled like urine) and there is no indoor parking near the hotel. The cordless […] phone didn't work and the room safe failed several times. The staff was friendly, but I would prefer not to have so many occasions to require their service. After our stay, we noticed that the Topaz charged our credit card $100 when we checked in, even though the room was already charged through Hotels.com. Fortunately, we booked through Hotels.com, so there was almost no effort in getting the changes removed. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere nicer than the Topaz. You can do better. Read more
