First thing that is noticeable when arriving at the Madera is that the street in front of the hotel is torn up, making access to the hotel less than optimal. The hotel staff are attentive and the location is excellent. Unfortunately, this stay, the hotel is under renovation and general upgrade of rooms, a bit unsettled. It would have been helpful if this was noted since I might have reconsidered this stay at the property. On the whole, still a good value and good place to stay.

Great experience, best service I've experienced. Attached restaurant was really good. Room well equipped and convenient. Only drawback was 3rd floor room facing dumpsters was loud when truck came for trash at 2:30 am. Ask for higher floor!

The hotel is lovely and very conveniently located. I walked to the Smithsonian and the White House easily, and Dupont Circle is literally a block away. Others have noted that the bathroom is small, and it is, although that wasn't a big deal. The shower, however, didn't drain well, and the first day I was there, the hot water was in short supply, so […] that was kind of a bummer. But the staff is amazing, and very warm and welcoming. The Hotel Madera is the near perfect boutique hotel -- great personalized service, attractive rooms, very comfortable beds. With a destination restaurant thrown in. In the bustling Dupont Circle neighborhood and two blocks from the Metro. I spent a very comfortable week long business trip there.

It's hard to imagine a more pleasant stay than I experienced recently at Hotel Madera. The price was very modest, but the room was large, clean and tastefully decorated. The connected restaurant (Firefly) was terrific, and the short walks to Dupont Circle were quite pleasant. I recommend this without hesitation.

The quality of service varied widely. On check-in and check-out the clerk was rude and unhelpful. On the other hand, when I woke up at 2 AM and wandered down to the lobby to ask if there was any place close by that I could buy coffee, the clerk said he would make me a pot and bring it to my room.

I am a fan of Kimpton Hotels and this one lived up to Kimpton standards. I particularly liked the young man who hailed cabs, took my luggage to the room, and even started to check me in before the desk clerk arrived! He was great. I do wish the hotel had a fitness center; they did, however, give me a pass to Gold's Gym around the corner.

Was in Washington for a conference at a large downtown hotel but decided to stay at a smaller, more personal place. The Madera was a great place to land. From the outside it looks like it could use a new awning. This may seem discouraging initially; it is quickly offset by a member of the staff who was always available at the entrance to hail a cab or assist with bags. The desk staff was friendly and went well beyond what was expected. If they did not have personal knowledge of places in the area they […] found the location on the internet and printed directions while I waited. I signed up for (and paid for) wireless internet access. This was a poor decision. Wireless coverage was on and off... mostly off. I also tried using the buisness center to finalize flight arrangements and print my boarding passes. The computer there charged in blocks of 15 minutes. While I was accessing the internet homepage the computer froze and would not finish logging in. This took about 5 minutes for the staff to correct. I was not compensated for my time or offered additional time. The access code for small wall safe in my room did not work. I put in a request on day 1 to have this fixed. On the 4th day it was still not corrected. Often as I walked from my main room to the bathroom I would run into the safe door. It was a slightly painful reminder that the request was not being tended to. Overall: My room was clean, spacious, and the other accomodations fine. The staff was kind and sought to help. The attached restaurant (Firefly) had a great breakfast selection. The relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant was appreciated and the coffee top-notch. Read more

I didn't complain since as soon as I got into my room, there was no odor! Also, not that it bothered me, but the newer acrylic tub insert must have been placed over an older tub and there seemed to be trapped water between the insert and the older tub. You could kind of bounce up & down on the tub and hear water squishing! If there's stagnant, standing water, that may explain the terrible smell in the hallway. This is a nice and quiet hotel in a great location with a friendly and accommodating staff. Unfortunately, the airconditioning system is in dire need of maintennace or of an upgrade. The room was reasonably cool; however, the room felt really clammy, which I find very uncomfortable.
