The hotel was reasonably clean, but very outdated and worn. The location is great though!

This hotel was featured on Hotel Impossible on TV, which turned it around to a beautiful hotel on TV. It is NOTHING like that in person. LOBBY: When you walk in, you can see they do not care about upkeep or cleanliness. The white leather dining chairs were all dirty with dirty hand prints on the top. The couches in their lobby were covered with an old […] couch cover that had stains and dirt marks. There were clumps of hair on the floor. The bar area was filthy. The hallways are very dark and narrow. ROOM: The room was disgusting. The floors were very dirty, leaving chalky marks on my bags. The beds were very old, sinking in on each side and very uncomfortable. The sheets had MULTIPLE BLOOD STAINS on them. The walls were covered in dust. Dust was all over the place. The handle to the faucet in the bathroom came off. FOOD: All of their food is made in the hotel across the alley behind the hotel. This includes the continental breakfast that was really just toast, cereal, coffee and orange juice. By the looks of everything else, I would never eat there. We had to go through a back alley to get to the other hotel to eat. VALET: The valet took 30 minutes to get my car. Worth it to pay $30 a day to valet than $20 per entrance to parking garage. SERVICE: The people there were nice, but nothing worth mentioning. When I told the lady at the front desk about our experience, she couldn't have looked any more disinterested. Read more

The staff at the Penguin was the best we have ever had. We have stayed at much more expensive hotels and the staff could not compare to the Penguin . The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. You will have to pay for valet parking unless you want to keep going to the parking meter across the street and put in money. It's like that at most […] hotels in Miami. Parking is scarce. I would recommend The Penguin Hotel to anyone. Read more

The room was dirty, sheets stained, and had an unbearable stench of air freshener. The bed was uncomfortable and the only window covering was a sheer, white veil which made it seem as if we were sleeping directly on the beach once the sun rose. Had watched this hotel on Hotel Impossible being rescued , so when a South Beach trip was in the offing, I signed up for it. I was looking to see some of the improvements featured on the show, and they were there, especially the lobby and outdoor patio, all nicely done. My room had an ocean view, all the fixtures worked properly. Minor complaints; no […] instructions for use of A/C, TV , older bedding, and difficult to access shower controls. I had 3 interactions with front desk personnel, and in all 3 instances was dealing with a trainee, so they are bringing new blood on board. I had to lean under the shower head and get wet by it in order to turn it on. Valet parking was expensive! It is a small hotel, so service is normally personal, but I didn't feel the hotel went out of their way to make a connection. Overall I had a great time on South Beach, and though not in love with the Penguin would stay there next time.. Read more

I only stayed for one night. We arrived early to the hotel we were told the room would not be ready until 3pm. So we decided to have lunch everything is within walking distance which was the best feature of the hotel. The hotel had a little bit of a moldy smell so did the room but I can say it was cleaned very well so it may just be the building. Maybe […] they should invest in some kind of airfreshner so that is not the first impression you get since the hotel is actually very clean. The room also had a mini fridge which was cool. Overall the staff was nice except for the day we had to check out we asked for our check out time to be extended just for an hour the man at the front desk was not very accomodating. He stated he could only extend it to 45 minutes then changed his mind and said we would have to check out before twelve. I just feel he could have handled that a little better. Ive stayed at other hotels on the beach like the cardoza and not only was my room ready early they offered a late check out from the moment I checked. In end the hotel was ok, your getting what you pay for. Oh also be prepared to have a hold placed on your card for $99 and if,you valet $31. It will take a couple of business days for the hold to be removed. I have had hotels do holds before but never for that amount or for the valet. There is also a resort fee of $15 but they include two drinks and complimentary breakfast so you make your money back on that. Read more

No pool, no bar, no restaurant, no spa......but there it was......the "resort charge". Run down building. paint splattered windows. Unresponsive staff. Don't stay here.

The hotel was older art deco as most are on ocean blvd, but clean. The bed was broken and sunk in the middle (room 316). Their cable was horrible. I wanted to watch ESPN (college football) and they didn't get any of the major networks ABC, CBS, or ESPN. I had several freinds with me and wanted to watch the game in the lobby. I was told by the less than […] friendly young man at the counter i was not allowed to change the channel. It didn't matter after i found they had no reasonable channels any way. We had an oceanfront room and it was wonderful. There was even a window seat where you could see the water. Very nice hotel, great price!!! Location was perfect, right on Ocean Drive. Staff was extremely helpful with booking another night, moving to different credit cards, etc. Room was clean, very cool decor and perfect for South Beach!

Das Hotel mufft und ist schmuddelig. Das Zimmer war in Ordnung, wenn auch wirklich sehr niedriger Standard TV ging nicht, das Bett war eine Kathastrophe). Das Frühstück bestand aus Kaffee, Saft, Toast und Flakes. Das Parken sollte 30,- $ pro Tag kosten, Wucher. Besser auf dem öffentl. Parkplatz parken oder ohne Auto kommen. Ach ja, und wir mussten […] eine Ressortgebühr i. H. v. 15,- $ zahlen, dafür erhielten wir dann schlussendlich nur das Frühstück. Das Ressort konnten wir nicht finden. ;-) Einziger Vorteil: die Lage! Man muss nur über die Straße und ist schon am Strand, perfekt. Ich würde beim nächsten Mal lieber in einer Paralellstraße buchen, auch von dort ist der Strand und das Nachtleben nicht weit. Das Hotel ist super gelegen und nur wenige Minuten vom öffentlichen Strand entfernt. Die Wände sind jedoch sehr hellhörig.
