"Great hotel for short stay"
It`s one of the cheapest hotel on Ocean Drive. Not a luxurious one and probably not for a one-week or longer stay or for honeymoon. But its not that bad as other reviews show. Or at least I was lucky with personnel and room :) It`s location is simply perfect, all South Beach entertainment is in 10 mins walk, beach is less than 2 minutes. It`s on Ocean […] Drive, so it`s quite noisy, preferring a quiet place, better stay bit far away from the beach area. Corridors need some renewal and much more light, you feel yourself on a dark ship. Reception is nice, combined with a bar and a patio, both person in reception were very nice and helpful. Room is okay, nothing special: mixed European and American style. Bed/mattress is very noisy. Bathroom is nice, clean and really stylish. Continental breakfast is quite poor, if you want something more mouth-watering, try any bar in the neighborhood or order a `la carte breakfast in their restaurant for an extra fee. This hotel is a good choice if you spend some nights on SoBe and you don`t wanna pay all your money on hotel rooms. For the price it was an excellent deal, The resort is within walking distance of all the major bars on ocean drive, several great eating areas and is right across the road from the beach. While the hallway was dark and bleak, the elevator small, as soon as we entered the room we were pleasantly surprised by a clean, well designed and very nicely furnished […] room. Also nice was the inclusion of a small fridge, safe and hairdryer. which at our next hotel in key west included none of such amenities despite costing more per night. The bed was comfortable and the black-out curtains provided plenty of darkness to keep us sleeping late in the morning. Also the plethora of pillows could satisfy anyone. among other things included was breakfast, 2 free cocktails, 2 bottles of water and free wifi. (note, There is a 15 dollar nightly surcharge atop the standard room rate) I think the $15 was well worth it. My biggest complaints was parking, the hotel has no self parking, valet parking is $30 a day, while nearby parking garages offered $20 a day self parking. third option was to secure a parking spot on the street and pay the parking meter $14 every 8 hours though you don't have to pay between 3am and 8am. This place is lovely. It is super clean, quiet and the staff are extremely helpful. There is a $50per night security deposit. You can give it in cash or they put a hold on your credit card. If you budget is tight you should know this. There is a $15 + tax "resort fee." What this gets you is a continental breakfast for two, two cocktails in the afternoon, […] 2 bottles of water, free wifi and beach towels and chairs for the beach each day. I've been charged resort fees before in Las Vegas and didn't get any of this stuff so if you make use of it, then it's value for money. In fact the cocktails are worth the $15 on their own- they were delicious and they packed more punch than $20 Liter cocktails sold at the restaurants down the road. The wifi is ok - it has enough power to check emails/facebook but if you skype or stream tv with it, then it will completely shut down after 5min. Be warned: the tour company pushed through the hotel "half price tours" can be disorganized. So make sure you pop into there office on Washington Av to confirm bookings. $61 for everglades, city tour and boat ride was great value. But for our Orlando tour they forgot to pick us up on the allocated day, when we rebooked the driver drove like a maniac talking on his phone the whole time. "Not for early risers"
The main problem with the Penguin was that there was no coffee maker in the room, nor in the lobby. They offer complimentary continental breakfast at a neighboring hotel, but it doesn't start until 8:00am. This meant I had to go to Starbucks both mornings and buy my own breakfast. As someone who wants that morning brew first thing, this was really a […] pain in the neck. My only other comment is that, although the room was fashionably appointed, there was hardly any furniture in it: a bed, one nightstand, a dresser, and a wet bar. No chairs or table, and the room was spacious so it wasn't a size issue. This made it inconvenient for dressing and checking email and eating my Starbucks breakfast. Be advised that the so-called "pool" at the President is a bathtup sized wading pool. Having said that, the staff is very nice and the hotel is in a great location.
