"Shoddy Hotel- You're on your own with Essex House."
This was a very shoddy hotel experience. I was having a great trip, so it was in spite of that I continually ignored the zero amenities, dank smelling room broken elevator for a 3rd floor walk-up and construction going on in the lobby. Hotel staff members were friendly and relatively helpful; location is pretty good (only one block from the beach); room was clean but bed was probably the most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept on. My wife and I booked a five night stay at the Essex House Hotel and after only one night decided to check out early (AND pay 50% of the value of remaining […] nights) and move to another hotel around the corner (which was cheaper, better location, great beds, staff was more friendly, etc. - it's called Roommate Hotel: Waldorf). The hotel itself is located 1 block from Ocean drive, which is nice BUT we arrived at 8AM and the check in was only at 4PM!!!! As a consequence we wasted almost one day wandering in Miami. Essex House had a very friendly staff and the location could not be beat. The use of all of the Clevelander amenities was a big perk as well. We were some what disappointed with the room being old & run down. Many,many renovations being done at the hotel from carpet,landscaping,pool,etc. Extremely unhappy with the garbage trucks noise picking up on alleyway EVERY morning at 7 AM and seemed to last forever. The on-line pictures are misleading. The lobby and lounge areas were nice, but the room decor was dated. There was a horrible musty smell in the room and the carpet was filthy with several stains.
