"good January get-away"
The Westin was a great hotel. We booked online and therefore had one king bed instead of the two queens we requested. We stayed in that room our first night and then were moved to another room with two beds the second night and third nights. Our only disappointment was that every day there was a cruise ship docked right on the west side of the hotel […] which remained there until evening and blocked the view. The location of this hotel is a BIG plus. It is right on the marina and very near Duval street, Audubon house, Hemingway House and Fort Zachary Park (all walking distance). The staff were all friendly and had pleasant smiling faces, no complaints there - nor about the condition of the room. The one thing I did have an issue with was the food. I have had to travel to a lot of remote places and i usually find something, so this was the first where i came up empty handed. "Spa is on Sunset Island not in Key West"
The hotel has great service and amenities. The one thing is the spa is actually located on a separate island, which requires a ferry ride to get to. If your looking to simply roll down to the spa from your room, this isn't the hotel. I booked this hotel for this reason. We stayed five nights. I found the room to be pretty much an average hotel room. It was clean; with nice towels, bathrobes and a wonderful bed. The only complaint was, we never knew when they would come to clean the room. The pool area was adequate, kind of small with little shade. Upon arrival, we explained it was my wifes birthday. Could we please have an upgraded room. The hotel put us in a 3rd floor room (courtyard) over looking a dempster. We called the front desk and explained our situation again to the manager, he appologized, and put us in a room with the ocean view. The location is the best in the keys. However, the room stank of mildew, the refrigerator leaked water all over the rug. Probably the source of the mildew. Great location for Key West--walking distance to Old Town and other tourist attractions. Pool was small but good for kids. Shops near the property were quite nice as well. Best of all was the sunset view from the hotel restaurants. The fresh, clean room was a welcome respite after our 4-hour drive from Miami. The only downsides were the gym and the […] pillows. Nice hotel in a great location. The room was fine and the staff very accommodating. The common areas, the pool, hallways and reception rooms always seemed to need attention. Towels were left from the night before as well as drink cups under chairs, cigarette butt was in the hallway for three days before it was removed, Christmas plants had dead leaves […] on the floor which were there the entire length of our stay. "Great Hotel, Great Location, but locked up tight by 10p."
I had read a couple of reviews prior to booking here that indicated the condition of the hotel had deteriorated. We saw none of that. The hotel is in fantastic condition in and out. The location right on the water and 2 short blocks off the corner of Green and Duval (the heart of the city) could not be better. Great restaurants, shops, scooter rentals, […] jet ski tours right off the dock, and plentyy of interesting people watching are in within a very short walk. The one and only complaint we did have was with the fact that there is not a shop, pool or even a bar open past 10p. I had brought my 17 year old daughter so partying in the streets (the normal after hours pass-time in KW) was not a great option. I normally wouldn't complain about the lack of rental movies in the room but with nothing else doing so early in the evening....... Our guess was that things shut down in order to keep the partyy out on Duval street and not disturb the guests. Definately not a deal killer but it made it tough to enjoy a down night. "Great Location, Friendly Staff and Comfortable!"
Having stayed at this hotel previously, I knew that it was a good choice before leaving. It's a very nice hotel that shows signs of aging (cracked cielings, drywall repairs left unfinished, etc.) but is comfortable and convenient. Our bathroom sliding door had about a 1" gap between it and the wall which was weird. Nice that we were able to sail right […] from the docks next to our room though! Front desk staff was prompt and receptive to requests. I was a tad disappointed with the bartender at the 'poolside' bar as he simply wasn't friendly, although he WAS quite competent as a bartender. One final and peculiar experience was the 'housekeeper' that literally met us at the door as we were leaving in the early morning of our last day to go enjoy a few last minute experiences to ask what time we'd be checking out. I travel frequently and understand that they want to get rooms turned over, but in addition to having him 'in our face' at 0830 as we were walking out of our room, felt a bit like a bum's rush! "Great Place for a Vacation!"
My son and I had 4 days and 3 nights in Key West and it was our first trip. The Westin was in an ideal location and we were very satisfied with our stay. It is convenient to the activities in the main part of Key West. The concierge in our wing booked us on the best sail, snorkel and kayaking tour -- Dangers. The launch to the Sunset Key resort was […] very convenient. The spa at the Sunset Key is exception. My son loved the areas to skateboard at the hotel and marina. Taxis were easy to catch for other adventures -- jet skiing. The Westin is a short walk to restaurants, museums, Mallory square for sunsets, tours including the Ghost tour. If you have not been to Key West and have only limited time, you can't beat this. I do wish the front desk staff would extend checkout for Starwood members and if they would be more flexible about lending cell phone chargers.
