The Mayfair is conveniently located near the LA Convention Center and the Staples Center Arena. It's just a few minutes' walk. The hotel has not apparently been recently refurbished. The lobby is lofty but nondescript. A PA features music from a cheesy FM radio station. My room was spartan. "Not to bad for the money"
Historic is in the name which lets you know it is an older hotel. The carpet could use a good cleaning, there is a bit of a musty smell as well as some stains. Shower was small and cramped. The air conditioner was not working but it was January so I just opened the window. The staff was great, the neighborhood is not the greatest but not that bad either. "Comfortable room, lackluster internet"
I reserved a room with a queen or king bed, was served a room with two full beds. They moved us to another room but that was horribly small with none of the amenities we needed (desk & fridge) so we moved back to the original room and pushed the beds together. Overall, it was great for the price and location. It's about a 30 minute walk to the Staple Center and the neighborhood isn't bad. The beds were a bit stiff for my girlfriend and I. I've always wanted to stay at the Mayfair hotel and it was just a disappointment in the room and service. We were put in a room that had no hot water and then no one came to fix it so instead we were given a new room. Prior to going up to the room, I had ask to have our parking comp due to the inconvience of us having to move. I was promised it would […] be dealt with. It was a pleasant surprise when we got upgrade however the next day when I was checking out my parking was not dealt with. I stayed here for business and quite frankly would have preferred the comp parking instead of the upgrade. The front desk agent proceeds to argue with me over $12. The hotel has a wonderful view to down town LA. It has a warm charm from the beautiful architecture. Contrary to the reviews read online my room 1522 was very spacious 2 king size beds and an additional desk .The bathroom was now too roomy . It would help if the door swung outwards. Either the hotel needs maintenance budget expansion or THE MAINTENANCE MANAGER NEEDS TO BE FIRED! . HOW ON EARTH DOES HE ALLOW SUCH A GORGEOUS ENTRY LOBBY HAVE WATER STAINS ON THE CEILING? . The carpets needs replacement or a good professional steam cleaning something I agree with other comments posted on the internet. "Ok for the price..."
I read the reviews on expedia and they were pretty spot on. This is a beautiful old hotel from the outside, but it's in a pretty slummy neighborhood. That said, I never felt unsafe - and I was able to walk to several places even at night. Parking was $12 a day and the garage is attached with in and out privileges - this is actually a pretty good deal […] parking wise - especially given how cheap my rate was. The staff was very friendly and the concierge had good tips. I walked to Dodger stadium - just under 3 miles because was pretty day and it's convenient to getting in and out of down town. The negatives are the beds - they are pretty hard..and the rooms - while clean are pretty run down. Bottom line, don't take your girl there to impress her, but if you need a cheap place to stay on business, it's more than adequate (free wi-fi worked fine). I would not recommend families with children though because it's just not that scenic of an area. The water pressure in shower was good, and the air conditioner worked well enough. A nice place to stay if you want to be close to everything, but not have to destroy your bank account at the Ritz. Good things: it was at least clean, a nice view of the city if you're lucky, and the beds are comfortable and warm. Breakfast is $8 (it's not bad, but the dining room is kept stiflingly hot and uncomfortable). It is an old building and the rooms are decorated simply with ugly walls, but I'm not there to bask in the hotel room. Yes, the rooms are also small with an almost impossibly small bathroom, but again, I'm not there to hang out in my hotel room. It would seem that the neighborhood is unsafe because it's in the middle of the city, but it's really not. Everyone walking around at night minded their own business and didn't try to bother me or anyone else. I'm more nervous of the characters who hang out at MacArthur Park. The initial appearance ( outside) is spectacular! As the sidestreet garage entrance degrades the hotel because it looks like a poorly kept neighborhood. The actual entrance to hotel from garage is inviting! The lobby--dazzling!! The carpets on various floors ( viewed as elevator opened to each floor) appeared to need vacuuming.
