So, I happen to really like this neighborhood - great restaurants, vibrant scene, not too stuck up, a little rough around the edges. The Independent hotel fits right in: warm hospitality, quirky good design, no prentention. Can I mention the free wine reception? Generous free breakfast items delivered to your door? Mini-kitchenette area!! Well designed […] bathroom sink that ACTUALLY HAS SPACE FOR YOUR STUFF??!! <3 The one thing, though, is that this is a place I would stay as a leisure traveler, not a business traveler. Hard to block out light, crack around door let noise and hallway light in, no real workspace (wound up using laptop on the aforementioned awesome bathroom countertop). Plus, the noise of the vibrant neighborhood carries. None of this would bother me if I were here for fun, but it was a little hard to sleep before some big meetings. So: overall awesomeness, but a little rough around the edges. Charming leisure hotel option, for sure, but business travelers who need to work/sleep should look elsewhere. Read more

The Independent Hotel has character and is centrally located in downtown Philadelphia. I loved the tall windows and furnishings. There was a fire in the fireplace in the lobby on a chilly March day. Nice touch!

This hotel was really weird. The bed was uncomfortable, the sheets scratchy, the bedspread pilled and lumpy. I would not recommend this hotel at all. Didn't sleep well. Really tacky and cheap furnishings.

Clean room, good location. The only reason i gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is that the lighting in the room was not great. Had to turn on every lamp there was and it still wasnt enough light. Still it was a great room that felt more like a bedroom then a hotel room which is nice. Hardwood floors gave it a very upscale feel. I am going back next week.

The room was spacious and comfortable, and the shower head (double, Speakman) was AWESOME. Nice to have a simple breakfast included in the price. Also nice to have complimentary wine in the evening. I'll definitely stay here again if I'm back in Philly.

Loved the room; had a microwave, coffee pot, excellent free wine and cheese at cocktail time, and a breakfast delivered to the room that was all included in the price... what a great hotel. Only thing to note is the hotel looks like an apartment building, so need to pay attention to the address. We stayed here because we prefer supporting independent businesses over chains, and we were attending a concert at the Kimmel Center. It was a very quick walk to the Kimmel! Loved the old building, and the room was very comfortable, large and nice, tall ceilings. Sometimes the lighting was a bit dim, and there was noise from a generator or something […] behind the walls of the bathroom. The electric fireplace was a little tacky (gas would be much better). I stayed here during a conference in Philly last weekend (1/5). While the hotel is conveniently located and visually nice inside, the rooms are just not very comfortable. Firstly, the layout of my room, which was a king deluxe, was very strange. All of the amenities were situated around the perimeter of the space, with the bed perpendular in angle to […] the TV, and with no movable chairs you're forced to turn your head 90 degrees to the right just to see the screen properly, or lay stomach side down across the middle, which is unbearable after about five minutes. Secondly, the building is very old, and while that is part of its charm, it clearly poses certain maintenance considerations. The most important of which is the fact that it's not insulated properly and has gigantic single-pane windows, making it impossible to heat properly during the winter months. The one positive comment I can leave is that shower was excellent–two heads, high pressure, instant heat. Read more

The Independent is a boutique hotel and if you're looking for a lot of frills, a bar and valet parking, you'd better look elsewhere. We were in for a convention, but I didn't want to stay at the convention hotel. The Independent is within easy walking distance of the Philadelphia Convention Center, the Reading Market and many other attractions. The […] staff was helpful and had suggestions of where to eat, park our car and how to get to places of interest. The rooms are about the size of a large master bedroom with a loveseat, desk, microwave and a refrigeration (thankfully, NOT stocked with $5 bottles of water and candy bars). The bathroom is large though the shower stall is small. The room temperature can get chilly, but is easily adjusted to a more comfortable temperature. There's not much of a view on the one-way street and surrounding neighborhood, but who stays in a hotel to look out the window anyway? The hotel is clean, comfortable and centrally located. Oh, and the free wi-fi is a definite plus compared to the $12 a day the host hotel was charging. On our next visit to Phladelphia, we would definitely stay at The Independent again. Read more

This was a great place to go for the conference. It is a little far if you are walking everyday but I felt like it was great exercise. After 2 flights, my day beginning at 4:00 am, and taking the Lady Liberty van from the airport to this hotel, new to me- I was so pleasantly surprised. I don't have much experience with "boutique" hotels, but this unique hotel fits the description, being small and different. The room felt more like a bedroom in a house than a hotel room, perhaps due to the hardwood floors and window in the large bathroom. Very friendly and helpful front desk staff. The bed was comfortable and the shades plus heavy drapes blocked out the light that I slept better and longer than I usually do in hotels. The A/C is based in the bathroom (although vents to the bedroom), so was not too loud. This a very nice hotel and my room was spacious and clean. the staff was outstanding the comp breakfast delivered to the room was great. Very nice room at a great rate. I stayed on the north side of the hotel and there was a great deal of ambulance traffic going TJU Hospital. Worse yet was the people hanging around outside the hotel until 3am yelling […] and carrying on. The hotel has old original windows so you can hear everything from the street below. very annoying. Outside noise isn't something the hotel can control so........i can't fault them for noisy neighbors. The hotel has a real character and very different than the usual hotel room. I like it that the rooms are different (I saw 2 of them) and enjoyed the style of the hotel. However, it is kind of strange that the reception in on the 2nd floor, and the front door is locked. You get in by buzzing the receptionist and giving him/her your info. There is a free wireless, and breakfast is given in a basket by the door. nice. better than the breakfast room for me (although may not work for everyone). The only thing is that the ac was a bit noisy. When I complained the receptionist was sweet and offered another room (that's how I know each room is different), but the other room had exactly the same ac buzz.
