The Canterbury is a very cool historic hotel with excellent, friendly staff. We had a drink at the bar and it was very good, also, and we also partook of the afternoon tea as this was something my wife had wanted to do for some time now. "Beautiful hotel in the heart of downtown"
We enjoyed our overnight stay while celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. The room was perfect for us and the location made it easy to walk to places downtown. "Quaint but not impressed"
I had read the mixed reviews but decided to go ahead and book a room as it is the only hotel I found in Indianapolis that seemed to have any charm. It is a charming hotel, but the service was very disappointing. The bell men were helpful when I called for directions, but nobody even opened the door for us when we arrived. The concierge /manager person […] who seemed to be in charge talked to others, but ignored us and never inquired anything about our experience. The staff in the restaurant bar were very nice. It was kind of cute, but not "polished". The desk didn't even greet us when we approached. The complaints we have could easily be addressed. Although not plush, we really liked the rooms. It was definitely worth it to book a corner room for which I had made a special request due to reading the other reviews. The bathroom was clean and practical, but definitely not modern or updated. My wife and I had a very nice experience at this hotel. The atmosphere and decorations for the holidays were perfect. The staff was very accommodating also. "Great Place to Spend New Year's Eve"
My boyfriend and I stayed here on New Years Eve 2011, and since most of the surrounding locations were closed for the evening, we just hung out downstairs in the lobby area, which is more comfortable and enchanting than it sounds, with a chandelier and piano in one room and a cozy furnished room off of the check-in desk that I can only describe as being […] like a den. The manager on duty that night was wonderfully accommodating and gracious. He suggested we go to the lounge for the countdown to midnight, and it was just as nice and homey as the rest of the hotel. "Old Style Charm with a couple of caveats"
Minuses: Yes the air conditioner did not work -- until I turned it on! So that was okay but it is confusing to walk into a hotel room in June and have hot air blasting out of the vents. The shower curtain had mold along the bottom -- gross. I The "cold" water in the sink was never close to drinking water cool. My biggest negative: The bed was TOO SOFT. […] OMG, my back. While I tried to sleep the green flashing data port light flashed at me making it hard to sleep. The pillows were lovely and my honey wanted to steal them but the beds made us checkout early. LOL -- is this on purpose?? Also we need two nightstands, not one please. The Pluses: The charm of the place is outstanding. Antiques and artwork everywhere. I found it odd that the prices were on the items but since I didn't have $10,000 to buy a statue, I just enjoyed and didn't ask. The bar was lovely and great for people watching. Didn't eat at the restaurant but we did order room service after 11pm. The cheeseburgers were perfect. The TV was huge; I loved it. Overall I would suggest someone with a keen sense of detail do a walk through and notice what a customer would notice. And tweak those little things. I was surprised how outdated the room was. It was clean but looked like my grandma's house 40 years ago. The room was very small with no flat screen TV or even a coffee maker!! The location of the Canterbury is very convenient within downtown Indy. In fact, we had already planned to have dinner at St. Elmo's, so it could not have been more perfect to just walk next door. The Canterbury is a very charm old hotel. I must admit that I was disappointed that we were not given an updated room. Although very clean, it was most certainly […] showing its years of wear. I had read that they were under going a major decor renovation, but it does not appear to have started yet. In fact, they still use physical keys for their locks!
