I arrived and was taken care of promptly, the hotel was above expectation as was the room. I had a very nice stay, The best part was the location down town. Although the rail station was next door it gave no problem.

We have been enjoying our stays at The General Palmer Hotel for over 10 years and when taking our fall trip through Northern New Mexico and Southwestern Colorado we would never consider staying anywhere but this hotel. You will be or can't be pleased. Everything is first-rate and first class.

The Elevator is really small, but it goes with the style and era. The rooms on Main St. were really noisy due to the night life.

The General Palmer is a beautiful, classy, quiet hotel located in the heart of Durango. The staff was friendly and unobtrusive. Parking was free and the parking lot conveniently located right behind the hotel. Our room overlooked Main Avenue on the third floor and was decorated beautifully. There were many nice touches, such as wine glasses and a corkscrew, […] a glass water pitcher and drinking glasses, a four-poster bed, fluffy robes, and a tv in an armoire with doors that closed. The antique furniture and lamps were such a neat touch. I felt as comfortable and relaxed staying here as I did when I lived in Durango 6 years ago. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone. Well done! Read more

A/C very noisy, nightime road construction right outside our window between the two, we did not sleep much. Good thing it was only for one night. We have stayed here before with a much better experience.

I like trains, steam trains and this was the perfect room next to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage RR. The second floor room had a high comfy bed and the balcony overlooked the train yard. On a practical note, the adjoining resteraunt had great food and drink under a canopy of stars, or patio canopy with a most pleasant staff. Stayed here twice in the past few months. FANTASTIC STAFF. Super friendly, entirely helpful. Well stocked, tasty continental breakfast. Cookies all day. :) The only issue we had was noise both times. First time, it was snow plows maneuvering back and forth in front of the main building at 3 am. Not the hotel's fault at all. Second time was a man […] ranting in the next room at the Palace annex part of the hotel from 930 past midnight about post offices, CALTRANS & politics - and the air conditioner fan on top of the building that scraped as it ran. Had earplugs, but was still kept awake by Mr. Angry next door & the on/off metal-on-metal sound. Wish the roof top a/c was fixed - the wall were thicker and his hearing was better. The train next door blows its whistle, but it's not that early - and a pleasant sound. Was told 10pm was kick-in for city noise ordinance, so to call staff immediately if a neighbor is screeching - especially if it's late. They assured us they'd have no problem handling it. Read more

Beautiful late 19th century hotel, beautifully restored, right in the heart of downtown Durango. It is directly next to the retro train station and museum which is convenient if you are taking the Durango to Silverton train ride for a 1900-era train experience. The General Palmer was a good hotel in a great location. We enjoyed the location right next to the Silverton Railroad station. (However, about 5:30 pm the noise was a little much from the railroad.) The service was excellent... The decor was appropriate for the early 1900 era. We will stay there again when we go back.

This was the most pleasant stay I had in quote some time. Friendly, helpful staff. Great location in the middle of historic downtown Durango. Next to the historic railroad, so it can get noisy at certain times but that is part of the experience. This is like going back in time at a luxury level. Absolutely recommend!

Great location but our room was up two large flights of stairs with no elevator, and I had a sprained ankle. Difficult to manage. Most disappointing was the breakfast. No one was clearing the tables, the oatmeal was stone cold, and the orange juice container remained empty despite a staff person sauntering in twice while I was siiting there. Excellent service and very well maintained, but the room (queen) was a bit tight. This would have been fine were it not for that the room was noisy - would be so much better if there was better sound-proofing of the windows so we couldn't hear the garbage truck outside at 5am and the train outside at 8am.

The only detractor I have is, as part of the whole early century ambiance, it has the openable windows above the door to the room. We stayed one night at this charming 110 year old hotel. We had a room facing the street, which had some noise. Only other issue is with the beds and bedding, which were fine, but not great.
