The Modern is just that. Contemporary, urban, hip, very cool looking. Definitely more of a business hotel. Noisy, bustling place if that's what you are looking for. Relaxing, it's not. For the price, I felt the room was very small. It was clean, modern decor, did not care for the shutters leading connecting the sleeping area and the bathroom, while it was different, I would have rather had the privacy. The staff was exceptional, very courteous and accommodating.

I stayed at the hotel for my wedding and honeymoon. It was wonderful and seemed like a breath of fresh air compared to the other tired hotels in Waikiki. The staff were wonderful and even the casual restaurant by the pool was delicious. We ate at Morimoto after the wedding and it was superb. I can't see staying anywhere else in Waikiki.

Customer service was outstanding. The have free wifi and and as many waters as you wanted. No nickel and diming for everything. Would recommend requesting an ocean side room - it can be a little noisy on street side.

The hotel was well located, walking distance to many conveniences and on the bus/trolley line. Staff was very pleasant and extremely helpful with luggage, directions, tour planning, etc. The rooms were very clean and beds were comfortable. We had a great stay! Kathrin the front desk supervisor was terrific. We decided to upgrade our room when we arrived and she took the time to show us 3 different rooms before we made a decision. We chose a corner room on the 16th floor that had views of the ocean, with the sun rising and setting! Just stunning! She also made 3 recommendations for dinner-Morimoto's(in […] the hotel), Azure and Wolfgangs. Each one was special and delicious in its own way. We love this hotel, however booking late forced us into an undesireable room location viewing the room and an alley. The noise is this area was very loud with delivery trucks and street noise at a constant. It would have helped if the windows were updated with double pane glass. The staff at the hotel were wonderful. When they heard we were doing the marathon the next day, they moved our room to a more quiet area (and ocean view!) to get some much needed rest. They also allowed for a later checkout so we could return in time from the race.

We had many communication problems, were not told when we changed from King to 2 Queens that there would be no Lanai, room wasn't cleaned until 4pm each day, we really would have liked to have a nice room to come back to after the pool, shopping, etc. No fridges in the room, no coffee pots, had to request them. It was not a happy experience.

It is a really nice hotel for adults. The staff is very friendly and the amenities are very clean and modern. The main problem of the hotel is that is a little bit far from downtown and they do not have directly access to the beach and any amenity on the beach.

For the most part, the staff at The Modern were, at best inattentive and disinterested in their guests and at best, rude and inconsiderate. There were one or two standouts - Mark on the concierge desk and Ramon in the lobby bar were fantastic - but most of the pool bar staff, all of housekeeping and everyone in the spa and on the front desk, just really, […] really seemed bored and annoyed. All. The. Time. On the way out to the airport, my taxi driver told me several tales of people he had picked up at The Modern who had decided to bail halfway through their trip and try their luck elsewhere. It's that disappointing. What's really sad is that it's a beautiful hotel with a great amenities but the terrible, terrible service makes it a frustrating experience. We ordered room service one morning before a day trip and had to call to chase it twice, when it arrived, it was 20 minutes late and we had to leave. Housekeeping routinely missed obvious things like replacing or removing dirty glasses, failing to leave new bottles of water, changing towels and one morning, they just left the dirty bedding on the floor beside the window. Also, the mini bar is empty, save a card that says 'please call room service for mini bar items'. When we arrived at midnight and I wanted a cold drink, this was massively annoying. Now, compared with everything else, it seems like a minor inconvenience. The Modern talks a good game but lets itself down with it's shoddy service. Read more

If you are a bsn traveler, single person, or a couple, you want to stay here! If you have kids, maybe not. The hotel has valet parking only and it's pretty upscale, trendy, and spendy. Romantic pool, lighting and bar area. It's located in the perfect location, just off of the main, crazy and congested area of Waikiki beach but close enough to go there […] if you so choose. The beach is accessible via a boardwalk directly from the hotel and it's close to the Hilton's lagoon, which is a public lagoon so anyone can rent SUP's, kayak's, etc. You can also walk all the way down the boardwalk and rent these items for MUCH less money if you want to take them into the ocean. I will never go to Oahu again and not stay here but again, it was just my husband and I and we didn't spend a whole lot of time on the property because of the prices but did walk through the beautifully lighted pool area every evening and it was very lovely and romantic. Free WiFi throughout the hotel. No add'l hotel service fees. The main lobby has a night club that is packed with 20-somethings on weekends and everyone was dressed to the 9's. Free coffee in lobby until 9:00am every day. Very small refrigerator in room and no microwave. No tub; shower only. Loved, loved, loved this hotel and will stay again, for sure. Hotel employees were wonderful. That's the end of the good news. One wall of the bathroom is open shutters to bedroom, so there's ZERO sound deadening. It's just like doing your morning "business" in a bucket behind a curtain in the middle of the room. The first pool is a puddle -- literally 6 inches deep. The other pool, the only one that's actually […] used by guests, is very small, so it's PACKED with people. Drinks at the pool range from twice mainland pricing to over FOUR TIMES mainland pricing. Hotel will charge for use of the double-chaise-lounges or require large minimum daily purchase at pool ($125?) Pool music, like the gym, is loud head-pounding "fusion", with incessant, hard beat. We listen to all kinds of music, but it felt like the played the same continuous song for seven days. No Hawaiian music at all. Just pounding. There are NO OCEAN VIEW ROOMS. The "ocean view" is of the neighboring hotel (unless you stand on the balcony and look hard right). Silly, really. No ice machines. No laundry facilities. You have to call room service for ice, or pay $7 to wash a T-shirt. A load of laundry = about $180. A massage is FOUR times mainland pricing, so about TWICE normal resort pricing. Few signs provide direction. They are not worried about returning customers, because of the unlimited supply of foreigners to milk dry of $$, so they want EVERY dollar on the first trip. Frankly, you're money ahead to pay up or, better yet, go to another island. We'll never try Modern again. Read more

The hotel has recently been remodeled, so it is clean and in good condition. However, there is NO sound proofing at all. We heard parties all night long. I booked a ocean view room. But there is no ocean front view from this hotel. There is Ilikai hotel in front of this hotel so that you can see the Ilikai hotel instead of the ocean. So even it said that ocean view it is not. It is the Ilikai hotel view. I claimed about it because I paid for the ocean view, they gave 50USD credit that I can spend at […] the bar or room service. But the morning I had to check out , they have a problem in the system and whole hotel couldn't provide hot water or warm water to the room. So everybody had to check out without taking shower after the swimming. No discount for that from the reception. Overall, I rated 2.
