Waikiki established its reputation as a getaway when the Moana Surfrider opened its doors in 1901. Today, more than 30,000 hotel rooms are packed in the skyscrapers along the golden sands of Waikiki Beach. At the end of Waikiki, Diamond Head towers as an enduring landmark. "nice resort for vow renewals"
We booked this resort for the free vow renewal ceremony on the beach. It did not disappoint. The celebrant Kawena was superb. The photographer Boyana of Nature's touch photography took some wonderful photo. The resort itself was very good.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Outrigger Reef on the Beach Aloha Scott, Thank you for your review. We are happy to hear you renewed your wedding vows and took part of this special Hawaiian ceremony. We will be sure to pass on your compliments to Boyana of Nature's Touch Photography. Mahalo!
"Great location, very good hotel"
The Outrigger Reef on the Beach is in the perfect location for a Waikiki family vacation. The spacious, open main level offered a number of shops and several fun restaurants with lovely ocean views and good, if not great, food. Our room was clean and decently sized. We would have preferred a slightly firmer mattress than is there now and the decor is […] a bit drab, but the bathroom looked recently updated. Our partial ocean view room was as advertised, overlooking the pool with a nice view of ocean from the veranda. We had a slight issue in the middle of our stay with a foul smell in the sink area. Within minutes of reporting the problem an engineer arrived and the problem was resolved in less than an hour. That level of service, plus the unbeatable location right on the beach and within steps of Waikiki restaurants, shops, etc. made this hotel a very good choice for our vacation. Response by The Outrigger Reef on the Beach Thank you for staying at the Outrigger Reef and all the wonderful comments about the service and the location of the hotel. Outrigger Reef $100 million renovation was completed in 2008. The décor of the hotel represents a collection design, artifacts used by Hawaiians. The bedspread and carpet are replica of Ohe Kapala (Bamboo stamping), which is currently part of the cultural activities available on Sundays and Wednesdays. Other items are designed to represent the sail of an Outrigger Canoe. Koa wood is used thru out the entire property for its rich color and as it was commonly used by our Kupunas(Ancestors) in construction, furniture, building canoes. Aloha!
"Hotel on the beach"
We really enjoyed the hotel, as the staff were friendly and prompt to any questions and information about the area and tours. The pool was a real treat for the kids, and it was located right on the beach. However, the beach was , no kidding , on the reef so there were hard rocks right on the shore that hurt our feet, that isn't the hotel's fault. we […] ended up going next door to another part of the beach and walked 5-10min on the beach east where it was much nicer. The location was very convenient to all the local eateries, ABC stores, etc Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by The Outrigger Reef on the Beach Aloha Everett, Thank you for taking the time to share you recent visit with us. We are delighted that you found the staff to be friendly & the location of the hotel to be convenient & it met your needs. I am sorry to hear that the swimming area out front did not meet your expectations. Our hotel is situated on a fresh water stream that leads from the mountains to the sea. The first Waikiki settlers were ingenious engineers & they harvested the wetland into ponds filled with a variety of marine life. One of the largest ponds is known as Kalia, our hotel is situated on Kalia Road. In ancient Hawaii, people with a spiritual or physical ailment would come to the pond in search of healing. When the priest (Kahuna) would place a lei around their neck & instruct them to submerge the lei would come off & it was said that the afflicted ones were healed. This particular ceremony was called Kawehewehe which literally means “the removal”. Long gone are our ancient ponds but we welcome all our visitors the healing shores of Kawehewehe. I do hope you to take into consideration our history & visit our hotel again.
"Check the Pool for Hotel Guest ONLY"
This is a very nice hotel. Rooms are comfortable and it sits right on Waikiki beach. But keep in mind it is a public beach and there are many other none hotel guest who come to visit as well. Also there is no one checking if people swimming in the hotel pool are guest. There was also outside guest wandering in the halls of the hotel. There was a lady […] who was there almost all day asking hotel guest for a cigarette until security finally escorted her out. Overall though, the hotel is very nice, convenient to shopping centers and the hotel staff are very helpful. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by The Outrigger Reef on the Beach Aloha! Thank you for mentioning about your observation regarding non-guests at our pool and on our property. Our pool attendants do try to verify guests at our pool area however due to the open air atmosphere that we try to create and many of our guests prefer, it is sometimes difficult to monitor. We will remind the pool attendants to be more attentive. The safety and security of our guests are very important to us and it’s good to know that our Security eventually took care of the undesirable person. We’re happy that overall, you found the Outrigger Reef on the Beach nice, convenient and with helpful staff. We hope we will be able to host you again. Mahalo!
"Nice hotel close to everything:)"
Everything was great, except for our first tour to Oahu circle island, the tour guide who suppose to pick up us at the lobby never even when out to find us so we didn't get to go to our tour. Anyway the agent re-book our tour and we were glad to see our tour guide ED he was our tour guide at Pearl Harbor and he was a very good nice tour guide. He talk […] a lot about the Island and every details of our tour we didn't get bored from the start of the tour to the end:) ED went to look for all his people for the tour before he leaves the area so no one will be left out. One more thing I like was the renewal of vow at the hotel, we did ours at the same date of our anniversary:) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Very likely to stay here again on a future visit"
loved the location. Being a tourist destination, of course some things were overpriced (hotel food) but not to the extent of where we stayed when visiting in 2004. The Shorebird mai tai and after hours drink specials made for an even more pleasant stay. Access to Waikiki shops was superb. The remodeled rooms were great and may have been the primary […] reason why I picked this hotel over many other good choices in the area. WiFi in the individual rooms could be nicer. The basement area looks somewhat creepy and there was some flooding down there (a small quibble). A lot of tourists around, but never a long elevator wait was a plus, even though we really weren't in a hurry being on vacation. The Starbucks was in a prime location, where you could be sucked in even for Kona coffee while waiting for a shuttle or cab... :) Service on all levels was friendly and prompt. There are several Outriggers on Oahu, the Reef is just on the beginning of the west side of the famous Waikiki beach. Much less traffic in this area which we loved. The service throughout the hotel was fabulous, with the exception of the pool. Only one server for 100+ seats. This was our first trip to Oahu, I think we prefer Maui. The Outrigger was […] a great place to stay if you want to be close to Waikiki, but don't necessarily want to be in the heart of all the madness. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great romantic getaway."
Received an upgraded room as room rented was not ready. Beach front location is beautiful. The pool is quiet and lounges are readily available (hotel was booked solid). We were early arrivers and late departers. They let us use courtesy rooms at both ends to change and shower. Service was excellent. "close to the beach"
Couple of things to keep in mind if you are planning to stay: 1. This hotel has nightly live music around the pool area and the entertainment will usually start around 6pm and goes to 10 pm sometimes they may end slightly earlier then that. Now, I totally did not mind the entertainment, in fact, I liked it, it was mostly local Hawaiian musicians playing […] Hawaiian songs. Now with that being said, for some people if you are looking to go to bed early because you have to wake up early for a tour this may not be the ideal situation, at least get a room away from the pool area. 2. The night before my return trip, I had an incident where I was in bed only to be woke up because of strong cigarette smell, someone was smoking outside of a nearby balcony. I like to keep my balcony window open while sleeping and this is a smoke free hotel so it was annoying because the smoke was drifting into my room so I called the front desk and they said they will send security to investigate. I don't know what happened to that. This was not really the hotel's fault but would have liked to get a status of how it was resolved. Overall I was happy with this hotel, but keep in mind, there is another hotel called "Outrigger Reef" located few blocks away so if you are looking to call a taxi or book a tour and they are suppose to pick you up, make sure they understand you are on the "Outrigger Reef on the Beach" and NOT the "Outrigger Reef" Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice Waikiki Beach hotel"
This hotel was very nice, but the "OceanView" room they "upgraded" us to was about 1/2 blocked. All in all a nice room, clean and modern bathroom, in a busy area of Waikiki. We would definitely recommend this hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Really liked this hotel."
The hotel exceeded my expectations. The price was the best we found on Waikiki beach for 3 rooms for 6 people during high season; we were looking to economize here because we had several day trips planned. The hotel lobby was beautiful and included several nice shops. The restaurants were great and looked out over the beach. The rooms were clean and […] comfortable. The staff was wonderful: bell, desk, maid and restaurant. The pool was great. The beach was very nice although a bit narrow but there were some wider beaches within easy walking distance. And it was Waikiki beach - who could ask for more? I'd gladly stay there again. For further background, my wife and I lived in Hawaii in the early 70's so I was familiar with the city and Waikiki. This was my 4th trip back and we'd previously stayed at the Royal Hawaiian. This hotel isn't the Royal Hawaiian but was very, very nice and significantly less expensive. The check-in and check-out process was easy and fast. The staff personnel, I wish I remembered her name, who checked us in and checked us out was very friendly and helpful. I love the layout of the room...it's very inviting and comfortable. The hotel has 3 jacuzzi/whirlpools, which was very nice...one of them was attached to the pool. The other 2 were […] separate from the pool, which was nice...did not have to worry about not being able to use those facilities. At other hotels I've been to, there was usually only 1 jacuzzi/whirlpool...which was always fully occupies. Would stay at this hotel again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location, service spotty..."
Beautiful hotel in a wonderful location. Both restaurants near the beach (independently operated) were excellent with very good service. The valet staff at the hotel were very helpful as well. We were disappointed to wait 2-1/2 hours for a roll-away bed after asking 4 times. We were also surprised to come back to our room from being away all day and […] find that housekeeping had not done their job. They finally cleaned our room when we went to dinner. Staff was very friendly, but not responsive. Overall we would stay there again because of the location & facility. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel but they did not give me the right room"
Great place, very clean with plenty of amenities. However, I booked a room with partial ocean view, king bed and pull out sofa sleeper. The room they gave me did not have the pull out sofa, and to get it I was told I had to move to the pool side with no ocean view and pay an additional $50. .Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Loved the hotel, the staff was friendly and helpful. the breakfast buffet at ocean house could be a little better and with more variety.Genuine Expedia guest review
If allowed to do so, my 4's would have been 4.5's. From top to bottom the staff was superb. I would say they exceeded my expectations which isn't easily done. The hotel was very clean and family friendly. I would stay there again.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Nice if you don't mind large hotels"
I was happy with the overall stay. We visited right before Thanksgiving and the hotel was overflowing with people. The hotel's location in downtown Waikiki was perfect. We managed to take buses everywhere - to Lanikai beach, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, and walked to lots of restaurants and parks. Our partial ocean view room was very disappointing […] - there was no ocean visible from the room unless you leaned out of the balcony (and then you'd see a tiny patch of the ocean). All we had was a view of the pool. We wanted to upgrade to an ocean view room but were told that the hotel was fully booked (which I understand). The entire place was bustling with people, and nothing in our 5-night stay at this place made us feel special in any way. Of course the hotel was excellently-equipped, we felt safe, the room was large, there was wonderful music every evening by the pool and it was at the heart of Waikiki downtown. Perhaps reading all the excellent reviews set my expectations too high! When I return to O'ahu, I'll very likely be looking for a different place to stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Rochey Trip"
The lever on the tiolet was very hard to push down. I had to push hard so that the water did not continue to run inside the tiolet bowl. The shower head needed to be adjusted so that the water would not spill to the outside; this was fixed the day before we came home when we spoke with a housekeeper. On the day before we left, we were visited by a […] two inch cockroach in side the room. The housekeeping staff did come and remove it. I did enjoy our stay and I really enjoyed our view. The food at the Shore Bird Buffet was very colorful, fresh and tasty. The servers were extremely helpful and most pleasant. All in all we may consider returning to this hotel in the future. "Outrigger Reef On The Beach - Review - Feb. 2012"
I selected this hotel becuase it was rated higher than the Hilton Hawaiian Village, where I had stayed the last time I visited Hawaii. Although i believe this hotel is nice, I don't think it's of the same class of hotel. This hotel was nice, but not "Marriott or Hyatt" nice. I did enjoy my stay. "Nice hotel conveniently located right on the beach"
The hotel is nice and on the beach. Walking distance to central area and very convenient. The beach is good but if you walk ~5 min you can get to a better one - Sheraton or Royal Hawaiian. There are a lot of attractions and activities offered from the staff. Though - they'll try to sell you certain ones which are not always the best. There is a "free […] gift" - this is actually free breakfast with timeshare presentation. We are not fans of such promotions - they are great waste of time - so be aware. "Outrigger Reef, Honolulu - On Waikiki"
Located right on the east end of Waikiki Beach, this is a beautiful hotel. Our "City View" room looked out over the pool courtyard and offered a view of the Pacific from the lanai. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable. On site restaurants were expensive (though probably typical for Honolulu/Waikiki) and meals were good, though not exceptional. My […] one complaint is the "concierge" desk help. The staff at these desks (2 in the large hotel) did not seem to be there as much to help as to sell tours and meetings at which the property owner would present "information" about other properties. I would still recommend this very nice and well-situated hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Unfixable and fixable"
I don't like Wikiki. That's a lot of the problem. However, there WAS another problem. I was told that I could watch the new year's eve fireworks from a particular location a half hour before the started. But just after the fireworks started, security came and told us (and the 15 other people there) that would we could not stay there to watch the fireworks. Clearly, […] the employees who told we could watch there were mistaken. I get that. But once the fireworks started, security (and the manager he called up to deal with the situation) should have looked at the context and waited until the end of the show to remove us. Rather than simply correcting a mistake made by others --perhaps as they intended to do-- they turned it into a very unpleasant situation for me a on New Year's Eve. Timing and awareness of the situation are key here. And they got that wrong. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Was very pleased with the room and the service. The beach was right off the edge of the hotel, and had no complaints about the service, security or location. Within walking distance of the heart of Waikiki. Couple of comments - I'd expect some snacks or water in any 4 star hotel, but water and beer are not stocked in the small fridge, and no snacks […] were provided. dont care if I had to pay for it, but at least provide that option. "Excellent Family Vacation Hotel"
My wife and I stayed for ten days at the Outrigger Reef - Outstanding location at one end of Waikiki Beach, but the Outrigger's beach is a bit narrow, hence crowded. Easy to get to anywhere, and plenty of local shopping and eateries. In general, service was very friendly and prompt. Hotel staff went out of their way to smile or say hello. My only real […] complaint was the $30/day valet fee, but I guess you have to pay to play.... We were quite disappointed by the two beachfront restaurants. The fare at each was mediocre and one required you to cook your own meat/fish - kind of a pain in my opinion. The cafe by the pool had a decent casual menu and we preferred it to the other two. Speaking of the pool, while the pool area is clean and comfortable, it felt a bit dated, with a lack of tree cover and native vegetation. No big deal, but not as nice as some of the other pool areas in nearby resorts. The Outrigger Reef is a busy place with lots of guests and locals milling around and transiting through to the beach. It can also be quite loud so if you value your sleep, request a higher floor; sixth floor and above if possible. I'll sum up by saying that the Outrigger Reef is a great place for a family vacation on Waikiki Beach. Your kids will love it! If you are looking for something a little more intimate, I would suggest the Royal Hawaiian - a bit dated, but real old world ambiance and a lot less families with kids.
