Parking was a bit difficult at times, but since it's in a busy city, I felt that we did OK. Overflow parking was reimbursed by hotel when using a metered lot across the street. Good if you are on a budget & traveling to the NIH. Walking distance, and not as pricey as the nearby Doubletree. Very friendly and helpful staff. Quality is like a good roadside motel. Rooms are small. Basic amenities include coffee & complementary water bottles. Safety deposit box in rooms. "Suited our needs"
The hotel suited our needs. We stayed 3 nights the end of December. The hotel and rooms were clean. The mattresses were comfortable and slept well. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, they helped find near-by restaurants, answered hotel questions, helped with transportation to metro subway. The rooms were not the most up to date but pleasant. […] Not real satisfied with the continental breakfast, we ended up eating somewhere else the last 2 mornings. The metro subway is farther than the hotel advertises. Just have to plan for other transportation after 3pm and plan for breakfast alternatives, and parking lot holds only about 10 cars maybe. I was attending meetings at a nearby conference center. This hotel was very conveniently located, and provided a comfortable bed and clean room at a great price. The subway was a short to moderate walk away, and the neighborhood felt very safe. There were several good restaurant options nearby. "Affordable & convenient"
We wanted to stay close to Walter Reed as well as to a Metro station. The American Inn is older but well maintained. The Metro is an easy walk. I stayed here on a recent trip to DC and found it to be a good location and pretty good for the price, but not perfect. I was worried about the "limited parking" but it was not a problem. They have a small lot and garage onsite, but if those fill up they have you park in a public lot across the street which they pay for until 10am. If you don't feel like walking, you can take a bus--one of which is a free downtown shuttle--to the hotel. Room was clean and small, but comfortable. "Small Rooms but okay otherwise"
The worst things I can say are that a) the room was pretty small and b) the parking garage is small so that you _may_ wind up paying to park in a public lot nearby, and c) our view was of the apartment building next door. However, the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. We had a small car we could park in the parking garage where nobody else […] dared go, so we had free parking (most of the hotels in the area charge for parking). Breakfast (cereal, muffins, juice, hard-boiled eggs, fruit) was included in the rate. The staff was helpful and friendly. The location is about 3/4 mile north of the Bethesda row shopping area and a half mile (maybe less) from the Metro stop, but there is a free shuttle (the Bethesda Circulator) that runs on the street in back of the hotel. It runs 7am-10pm or so and can take you to the Metro or the shopping area. We were very happy with what we got. I would say if you plan to use the room for much more than sleeping (say, a gathering place during a family reunion) that you find a hotel with bigger rooms, though.
